Carthamus tinctorius L. leaves, a waste product after Carthami flos production, are rich in flavonoids. Total flavonoids from C. tinctorius L. leaves (TFCTLL) exhibited the protective effect on acute liver injury in mice in previous studies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of TFCTLL on chronic liver injury (CLI) and investigate the underlying mechanism. The chemical components of TFCTLL were identified by UPLC-Q-TOF/MS, and their migration into blood was evaluated. The protective effect of TFCTLL on CLI was evaluated by antioxidative and anti-inflammato

The incidence of cardiac dysfunction after myocardial infarction (MI) continues to increase despite advances in treatment. Excessive myocardial fibrosis plays a vital role in the development of adverse cardiac remodeling and deterioration of cardiac function. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanism of the fibrosis process and developing effective therapeutics are of great importance. Salvia miltiorrhiza and Carthamus tinctorius extract (SCE) is indicated for angina pectoris and other ischemic cardiovascular diseases in China. SCE has been shown to inhibit the platelet activation and

Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA), a representative component of Carthamus tinctorius, has attracted much attention because of its remarkable cardiovascular activities. Its structure was originally reported in 1993 and has been widely cited to date. In our experiments, its solution structure was studied using NMR techniques in different solvents, including DMSO-d(6), pyridine-d(5), and CD(3)OH. The results indicate that the structure of HSYA is different than the previously described 1b, with 3-enol-1,7-diketo form. The structure has two keto-enol tautomers (2a and 2b), and 2a, with the 1-enol-3,

Safflower is an Asteraceae oilseed crop valued for its high-quality unsaturated fatty acids (≈90% oleic and linoleic acids), natural floral pigments, and diverse bioactive compounds. These attributes underpin its applications in functional foods, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and various industrial sectors. Safflower inherent tolerance to drought, heat, cold, and salinity positions it as a climate-resilient alternative to more temperature-sensitive oilseeds; however, omics-based research in this crop remains comparatively fragmented. This review consolidates recent advances across major omi

In this study, Carthamus tinctorius was separated into distinct parts (flower [F], stem-leaf [SL], and root [R]) and subjected to two different extraction protocols (water-ethyl acetate [WEA] and methanol-chloroform [MC]). The chemical profiles of the extracts were comprehensively characterized using HPLC-TOF/MS. Analytical results identified p-coumaric acid as the predominant compound in the WEA, whereas syringic acid was found to be the major constituent in the MC extracts. The antiproliferative activities of the extracts were assessed in the xCELLigence real-time cell analysis (RTCA) SP sys

The use of herbs as alternative cardiovascular disease treatment has attracted a great deal of attention owing to their lower toxicity. Whether Carthamus tinctorius extract prevent cardiomyoblast cell hypertrophy remains unclear. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of C tinctorius extract (CTF) on rat cardiomyoblast cell H9c2 and the possible molecular mechanisms. H9c2 cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 2 μg/mL) for 12 hours, subsequently treated with CTF (1-25 μg/mL) The incubation continued for another 24 hours, and the cells were analyzed with actin stain

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a cash crop grown worldwide. Its seeds and flowers are primarily processed for edible oil and medicinal raw materials, while stems and leaves are discarded as agricultural waste. Recently, plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PELNs) have gained growing research interest in food nutrition owing to their exceptional biocompatibility and relatively low cost for large-scale production. This study aimed to explore the potential functional value of safflower leaf agricultural waste by isolating safflower-derived PELNs. Firstly, a protocol was established f

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9) is a heparin-binding growth factor, secreted by both mesothelial and epithelial cells, which participates in hair follicle regeneration, wound healing, and bone development. A suitable source of recombinant human FGF9 (rhFGF9) is needed for research into potential clinical applications. We present that expression of oleosin-rhFGF9 fusion protein in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seeds stimulates hair growth and wound healing.
RESULTS: The oleosin-rhFGF9 expressed in safflower seeds, in which it localizes to the surface of oil bodies. The expr

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) serves as a reference dicot for investigation of defence mechanisms in Asteraceae due to abundant secondary metabolites and high resistance/tolerance to environmental stresses. In plants, phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways are considered as two central defence signalling cascades in stress conditions. Here, we describe the isolation of two major genes in these pathways, CtPAL (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase) and CtCHS (chalcone synthase) in safflower along with monitoring their expression profiles in different stress circumstances. The aa (amino acid) seque

Jasmonate-ZIM domain (JAZ) proteins act as core negative regulators of jasmonic acid signaling and mediate plant stress adaptation, developmental progression, and secondary metabolism. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an economically important Asteraceae crop with medicinal, edible oil, and ornamental values; however, the evolutionary characteristics and molecular functions of its TIFY gene family remain poorly characterized. In the present study, we performed a genome-wide identification of the safflower CtTIFY family, followed by systematic analyses of phylogenetic relationships, chrom

Carthamus tinctorius L. (CT) is widely used in Asian countries as a beverage and in folk medicine. The effects of CT extract on hemodynamics, vascular remodeling, the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and oxidative stress in the two-kidney, one clip (2K-1C) hypertensive rat model were investigated. Renovascular hypertension was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats and were treated with CT extract (500mg/kg/day) or captopril (5mg/kg/day) or vehicle for four weeks. CT extract or captopril reduced blood pressure, hindlimb vascular resistance, and increased hindlimb blood flow in 2K-1C hypertensive ra

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a purified polysaccharide (SPS) from the safflower in a cellular model of steroid-associated necrosis of the femoral head (SANFH), which was established in primary murine osteoblasts suffering dexamethasone pretreatment. After treatment with SPS (25, 50 and 100 μg/ml), the degree of necrosis induced by dexamethasone was significantly reduced in osteoblasts as evidenced by an increase of cell viability and a decrease of apoptosis in osteoblasts. Furthermore, pretreatment with SPS (25, 50 and 100 μg/ml) significantly attenuated the activation

This study investigated the structural and functional effects of electron beam irradiation on safflower and its regulatory mechanisms. Results showed that energy deposition from electron beam irradiation induced molecular-level changes, disrupting cell wall ultrastructure while preserving microstructure integrity, thereby promoting active ingredient release, such as the HSYA content, which increased to 18,987.9 μg/g. antioxidant analysis revealed that the hydroxyl radical-scavenging capacity of the treated samples was significantly enhanced, reaching 58.37%. In contrast, the scavenging capacit
