Articular cartilage (AC) covers the diarthrodial joints and is responsible for the mechanical distribution of loads across the joints. The majority of its structure and function is controlled by chondrocytes that regulate Extracellular Matrix (ECM) turnover and maintain tissue homeostasis. Imbalance in their function leads to degenerative diseases like Osteoarthritis (OA). OA is characterized by cartilage degradation, osteophyte formation and stiffening of joints. Cartilage degeneration is a consequence of chondrocyte hypertrophy along with the expression of proteolytic enzymes. Matrix Metallo

INTRODUCTION: In conditions like recurrent perforations, atelectatic tympanic membrane and poor eustachian tube function, temporalis fascia graft fails to give the desired result. In such cases cartilage is used for tympanoplasty. It was demonstrated that if the thickness of cartilage is reduced to around 0.5 mm, the sound conduction is comparable to that of normal tympanic membrane with excellent mechanical stability.
AIM: To intra-operatively measure the mean thickness of tragal and conchal cartilage and compare it for age and sex variations.
MATERIAL & METHODS: A total of 114 tragal and c

INTRODUCTION: Allogeneic cartilages are decellularized when they are transplanted subcutaneously to avoid the immunoreaction in clinical practice. However, transplanting cartilage with chondrocytes would be beneficial because chondrocytes are essential for the maintenance of the cartilage. In this study, we investigated the effect of modifications to cartilage before transplantation for the suppression of immunoreactions. We utilized xenogeneic models because they are often employed in preclinical safety evaluations prior to clinical trials. If xenogeneic immunoreactions can be controlled, all

PURPOSE: Viable cartilage allograft (VCA) is a cartilage tissue matrix that contains cryopreserved viable allogeneic cartilage fibres. This study aimed to assess safety and benefits in treating focal knee cartilage defects with VCA. We hypothesized that VCA is a safe single-stage procedure in isolated chondral defects.
METHOD: In vitro analysis, in vivo studies and a prospective case series were performed. VCA was evaluated in a goat cartilage repair model. Symptomatic International Cartilage Repair Society grade 3/4A lesions of the femoral condyle or patella were implanted with VCA. Internat

Focal articular cartilage (AC) defects, if left untreated, can lead to debilitating diseases such as osteoarthritis. While several tissue engineering strategies have been developed to promote cartilage regeneration, it is still challenging to generate functional AC capable of sustaining high load-bearing environments. Here, a new class of cartilage extracellular matrix (cECM)-functionalized alginate bioink is developed for the bioprinting of cartilaginous tissues. The bioinks are 3D-printable, support mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) viability postprinting and robust chondrogenesis in vitro, with t

Cartilage degeneration is the hallmark pathological alteration in osteoarthritis (OA). The irreversible accumulation of fibrotic cartilage compromises joint function and accelerates disease progression. However, reliable biomarkers and therapeutic targets for cartilage fibrosis remain lacking. Through bioinformatic analysis of bulk RNA sequencing and single-cell RNA sequencing datasets, RARRES1 (retinoic acid receptor responder 1) was identified as a key biomarker associated with cartilage degeneration. The functional role of RARRES1 was investigated using a CTGF (Connective tissue growth fact

BACKGROUND: The optimal surgical management of syndesmosis injuries consists of internal fixation between the distal fibula and tibia. Much of the available data on this joint details the anatomy of the syndesmotic ligaments. Little is published evaluating the distribution of articular cartilage of the syndesmosis, which is of importance to minimize the risk of iatrogenic damage during surgical treatment. The purpose of this study is to describe the articular cartilage of the syndesmosis.
METHODS: Twenty cadaveric ankles were dissected to identify the cartilage of the syndesmosis. Digital ima

Cartilage is a relatively simple connective tissue that plays a variety of roles in the human body, including joint support and protection, load bearing of the intervertebral discs, joint lubrication, formation of the external structure of the ears and nose and support of the trachea. The maintenance of cartilage homeostasis is therefore crucial. Cartilage-related diseases are difficult to diagnose and treat because their molecular and pathological mechanisms are not fully understood. Melatonin, which has a wide range of physiological effects, is an endocrine hormone mainly secreted by the pin

Rationale The small molecule Kartogenin (KGN) promotes cartilage regeneration in osteoarthritis (OA) by activating stem cells differentiation, but its pharmacological mode-of-action remains unclear. KGN can be cleaved into 4-aminobiphenyl (4-ABP) and phthalic acid (PA) following enzymolysis of an amide bond. Therefore, this study investigated whether 4-ABP or PA exerted the same action as KGN. Methods KGN, 4-ABP and PA were analyzed in cartilage of mice after oral, intravenous or intra-articular administration of KGN by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method. Their effect on proliferat

This study introduces an implantable scaffold-free cartilage tissue construct (SF) that is composed of chondrocytes and their self-produced extracellular matrix (ECM). Chondrocytes were grown in vitro for up to 5 weeks and subjected to various assays at different time points (1, 7, 21, and 35 days). For in vivo implantation, full-thickness defects (n = 5) were manually created on the trochlear groove of the both knees of rabbits (16-week old) and 3 week-cultured SF construct was implanted as an allograft for a month. The left knee defects were implanted with 1, 7, and 21 days in vitro cultured

OBJECTIVE: To develop a training module for carving ear cartilage.
SETTING: Designing the ear framework is one of the most challenging surgical steps during ear reconstruction in microtia and acquired deformities of the ear. Trainees do not get an opportunity to carve ear cartilage during their training period.
MATERIAL: Ox scapular cartilage was retrieved from a manual slaughterhouse. It was transported in a 4°C ice chamber. This was used as a training material for carving the ear framework. Each scapular cartilage was adequate for two to three ear frameworks.
RESULTS: Twenty-two trainees

BACKGROUND: A variety of strategies have been employed for managing articular cartilage defects of the knee, including drilling and abrasion arthroplasty. These treatments are not always effective and when they are, the benefits may only be transitory. Unsuccessfully treated cartilage damage may progress to degenerative disease states and result in the need for a total knee replacement. In recent years the surgical implantation of healthy cartilage cells (autologous cartilage implantation [ACI] ) into damaged areas has been seen as an alternative option and is currently under investigation as

Osteochondral allograft implantation is a form of cartilage transplant in which a cylindrical graft of cartilage and subchondral bone from a donor is implanted into a patient's prepared articular defect site. No standard exists for matching the cartilage thickness of the donor and recipient. The goal of this study was to use finite element (FE) analysis to identify the effect of cartilage thickness mismatches between donor and recipient cartilage on cartilage stresses in patellar transplants. Two types of FE models were used: patient-specific 3D models and simplified 2D models. 3D models highl

The implantation of autologous cartilage as the gold standard operative procedure for the reconstruction of cartilage defects in the head and neck region unfortunately implicates a variety of negative effects at the donor site. Tissue-engineered cartilage appears to be a promising alternative. However, due to the complex requirements, the optimal material is yet to be determined. As demonstrated previously, decellularized porcine cartilage (DECM) might be a good option to engineer vital cartilage. As the dense structure of DECM limits cellular infiltration, we investigated surface modification

BACKGROUND: Alar cartilage malposition is an anatomical variation. Axis of the lateral crus lies cephalically and can be parallel to the cephalic septum. The characterised findings of the malposition are broad and bulbous nasal tip, abnormal lateral crural axes, long alar creases that extend to the nostril rims, alar wall hollows, frequent nostril deformities and associated external valvular incompetence. This article presents a new technique for the repositioning of the lateral crus in this article.
METHODS: Open rhinoplasty was conducted. A cartilage Z plasty was performed on the lateral cr

Laryngotracheoplasty often includes bilateral lateral division of the cricoid cartilage, despite the theoretical risk that cartilage growth centers might be located in the lateral cricoid. To investigate the effect of lateral cricoid cartilage division on subsequent cartilage growth, 60 five-week-old New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups of 15 animals each. Group I was comprised of unoperated controls. The remaining animals underwent anterior (group II), anterior and posterior (group III), and anterior, posterior, and bilateral lateral (group IV) division of the cricoid carti
