Pseudomonas oryzihabitans cutaneous ulceration from Octopus vulgaris bite: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Octopus vulgaris is a common marine animal that can be found in nearly all tropical and semitropical waters around the world. It is a peaceful sea dweller with a parrotlike beak, and its primary defense is to hide through camouflaging adjustments. Bites from animals of the class Cephalopoda are very rare. We describe a boy who was bitten on his forearm by an Octopus vulgaris. OBSERVATION: A 9 -year-old boy was bitten by an Octopus vulgaris while snorkeling. There was no strong bleeding or systemic symptoms; however, 2 days later, a cherry-sized, black, ulcerous lesion developed, s

Cryobiology of cephalopod (Illex coindetii) spermatophores.

Cephalopod culture is expected to increase in the near future and sperm cryopreservation would be a valuable tool to guarantee sperm availability throughout the year and to improve artificial insemination programs. We have studied the tolerance of spermatophores from the oceanic squid Illex coindetii to several cryoprotectants, in two toxicity experiments and a cryopreservation test. Five permeating cryoprotectants were tested: Dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO), methanol, glycerol, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. In the first experiment, spermatophores were exposed to the five cryoprotectants a

Anisakis simplex larvae: infection status in marine fish and cephalopods purchased from the Cooperative Fish Market in Busan, Korea.

The infection status of marine fish and cephalopods with Anisakis simplex third stage larva (L3) was studied over a period of 1 year. A total of 2,537 specimens, which consisted of 40 species of fish and 3 species of cephalopods, were purchased from the Cooperative Fish Market in Busan, Korea, from August 2006 to July 2007. They were examined for A. simplex L3 from the whole body cavity, viscera, and muscles. A. simplex L3 were confirmed by light microscopy. The overall infection rate reached 34.3%, and average 17.1 larvae were parasitized per infected fish. Fish that recorded the highest infe

Factors affecting mercury concentrations in two oceanic cephalopods of commercial interest from the southern Caribbean.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations have significantly increased in oceans during the last century. This element accumulates in marine fauna and can reach toxic levels. Seafood consumption is the main pathway of methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity in humans. Here, we analyzed total Hg (T-Hg) concentrations in two oceanic squid species (Ommastrephes bartramii and Thysanoteuthis rhombus) of an increasing commercial interest off Martinique, French West Indies. Stable isotope ratios reveal a negative linear relationship between δ15N or δ13C in diamondback squid samples. No significant trend was observed between

Exposure Assessment of methyl mercury from consumption of fish and seafood in Peninsular Malaysia.

The concentration of meHg in freshwater fish and seafood was investigated, as well as the consumption patterns of fish and seafood by different demographic groups (age, ethnicity, gender). A potential alarm for human health hazards was also assessed, and the results were compared to the provisional tolerable weekly intakes (PTWIs) and the hazard quotient parameter (HQ). The results showed that meHg levels of 67 species ranged from 0.013 to 0.252 mg/kg of wet weight (WW) with significant differences between different fish and seafood groups (χ2KW = 49.09; p < 0.001). Median concentrations of me

1H NMR-based metabolomic analysis of cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis (Ehrenberg, 1831) exposed to hypoxia stresses and post-anoxia recovery.

Oxygen deficiency (hypoxia and anoxia) is an emerging concern in estuarine and coastal ecosystems worldwide. Previous studies on Mollusca Cephalopoda have focused on the effects of hypoxia stress on physiological performance and survival, but there are few reports on the molecular mechanism, and the application of metabolomics in cephalopods remains unknown. In this study, a 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based metabolomics approach was applied to investigate the metabolites profiles of Sepia pharaonis (Ehrenberg, 1831) during hypoxia and post-anoxia recovery. The results revealed that ob

New insight into mercury sources and trophic transfer in the Bohai Sea food web using carbon, nitrogen, and mercury stable isotopes.

Ocean serves as a major reservoir and pathway for mercury (Hg) in the global environment; however, the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer behavior of mercury species in marine food web remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the trophic transfer processes and identified key drivers of inorganic mercury (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in a marine food web in the Bohai Sea. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic data revealed distinct feeding ecologies among biota species. Trophic magnification factor (TMF) analysis indicated biomagnification of MeHg (1.48, 95% CI = 1.10 - 1.97), dr

Risk-based scoring and genetic identification for anisakids in frozen fish products from Atlantic FAO areas.

BACKGROUND: The presence of Anisakis larvae in fish represents a major public health concern. Effective risk management procedures should be applied to prevent heavily infected products from reaching the market. The aim of the study is to provide preliminary data on parasite exposure and risk classification in frozen fish products by applying a risk categorization scheme (site, abundance, density and epidemiology - SADE) and Fish Parasite Rating (FPR) method. Fish and cephalopods samples (N = 771) from 5 different FAO Atlantic areas were examined and categorized after an accurate visual inspec

Hepatoprotective effect of β-chitosan from gladius of Sepioteuthis lessoniana against carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress in Wistar rats.

Chitosan has attracted much attention as a biomedical material, owing to its unique biological activities. In this study, hepatoprotective effect of β-chitosan obtained from the gladius of squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana was studied against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced oxidative stress and liver injury in rats. The rats that received β-chitosan along with the administration of CCl4 showed significantly decreased plasma and tissue alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities and total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) and free fatty acid (FFA) contents, where

Developing neodymium isotope markers: can neodymium be extracted from a wide range of marine species and tissue types?

Neodymium isotope ratios have unique characteristics for tracking the movement and origins of marine animals. However, neodymium (Nd) is present in low concentrations in seawater and marine animal tissues, which can make isotopic analysis challenging. Previous research on Nd isotope ratios in marine animals has been restricted to bivalves, with limited details regarding sample preparation and variations in Nd concentrations. We tested five hot plate-based acid digestion methods on six marine animal classes (Actinopterygii, Thecostraca, Malacostraca, Cephalopoda, Bivalve, Holothuroidea) and nin

Genome of the ramshorn snail Biomphalaria straminea-an obligate intermediate host of schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, or bilharzia, is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. Infection by Schistosoma mansoni in humans results when cercariae emerge into water from freshwater snails in the genus Biomphalaria and seek out and penetrate human skin. The snail Biomphalaria straminea is native to South America and is now also present in Central America and China, and represents a potential vector host for spreading schistosomiasis. To date, genomic information for the genus is restricted to the neotropical species Biomphalaria glabrata. This limits und

Formation of the sclerites in Solenogastres and Caudofoveata (Mollusca, Aplacophora).

Solenogastres and Caudofoveata are vermiform, shell-less molluscs, with the mantle covered by calcareous scales or spines (sclerites) embedded in a cuticle secreted by the mantle epithelium. Molecular studies recover them as a single clade (Aplacophora), sister of Polyplacophora, and together, they form the sister group to all other molluscs. Within this phylogenetic framework, sclerites emerge as potentially informative characters for reconstructing early molluscan evolution. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying sclerite formation in Aplacophora remain poorly resolved. Previous work ha

An underwater imagery identification guide for shallow, mesophotic and deep-sea benthos in Maldives.

BACKGROUND: During the 2022 Nekton Maldives Mission, we deployed a variety of platforms (snorkelling, remotely-operated vehicles and manned submersibles) to conduct video surveys of the biodiversity and composition of shallow (< 30 m), mesophotic (30-150 m) and deep-sea (> 150 m) benthos found in the Maldives' central and southern atolls. In total, ~ 80 hrs of stereo-video footage were collected during the benthic transect surveys, which were subsequently processed using annotation software in order to evaluate benthic biodiversity and community composition. Here, we present a photographic gui

Immune repertoire in the transcriptome of Littorina littorea reveals new trends in lophotrochozoan proto-complement evolution.

The evolution of complement system in invertebrates is poorly investigated. While the repertoire of complement genes in several Ecdysozoa lineages is found substantially different from that of Deuterostomia, the composition and function of the complement in the second protostome lineage, Lophotrochozoa, remains unclear. Here we report the general description of new transcriptomic data on the common periwinkle, Littorina littorea, and trace the evolutionary trajectories of the ancestral proto-complement repertoire. The repertoire is defined as immune cascade providing the minimum set of C3-asso

Mercury and Po-210 in mollusc species in the island of Gökçeada in the north-eastern Aegean Sea: Bioaccumulation and risk assessment for human consumers.

Among the radioactive pollutants 210Po is the most substantial one in terms of seafood safety due to its efficient accumulation in marine animals and high irradiation of its alpha emission. Mercury is a highly toxic metal for both marine organisms and human beings. Biomagnification of MeHg (methylmercury) through marine food chains has made Hg concern of ecotoxicology and seafood safety. In the current study, the bioaccumulation of 210Po and THg (total mercury) were determined in 20 mollusc species, including 8 bivalves, 7 gastropods and 5 cephalopods collected from the island of Gökçeada in t

Signaling aggression.

From psychological and sociological standpoints, aggression is regarded as intentional behavior aimed at inflicting pain and manifested by hostility and attacking behaviors. In contrast, biologists define aggression as behavior associated with attack or escalation toward attack, omitting any stipulation about intentions and goals. Certain animal signals are strongly associated with escalation toward attack and have the same function as physical attack in intimidating opponents and winning contests, and ethologists therefore consider them an integral part of aggressive behavior. Aggressive sign
