Hydrogen Sulfide and Silicon Together Alleviate Chromium (VI) Toxicity by Modulating Morpho-Physiological and Key Antioxidant Defense Systems in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Varieties.

Extensive use of chromium (Cr) in anthropogenic activities leads to Cr toxicity in plants causing serious threat to the environment. Cr toxicity impairs plant growth, development, and metabolism. In the present study, we explored the effect of NaHS [a hydrogen sulfide; (H2S), donor] and silicon (Si), alone or in combination, on two chickpea (Cicer arietinum) varieties (Pusa 2085 and Pusa Green 112), in pot conditions under Cr stress. Cr stress increased accumulation of Cr reduction of the plasma membrane (PM) H+-ATPase activity and decreased in photosynthetic pigments, essential minerals, rela

Multi-model genome-wide association analysis of agronomic traits in a Kabuli chickpea MAGIC-subset population (Cicer arietinum L.) across Mediterranean environments.

Chickpea is one of the most consumed legumes due to its high nutritional value and accessibility to low-income populations. However, due to climate change, chickpea cultivation is exposed to various environmental stresses affecting its production and productivity. This study evaluates the agronomic performance of 168 MAGIC subset population across two Mediterranean environments, in Marchouch (Morocco) and Terbol (Lebanon). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted to identify potential marker-trait associations (MTAs) using the general linear model (GLM), the mixed linear model (ML

A Multi-Model Based Stability Analysis Employing Multi-Environmental Trials (METs) Data for Discerning Heat Tolerance in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Landraces.

Identifying a congenially targeted production environment and understanding the effects of genotype by environmental interactions on the adaption of chickpea genotypes is essential for achieving an optimal yield stability. Different models like additive main effect and multiplicative interactions (AMMI 1, AMM2), weighted average absolute scores of BLUPs (WAASB), and genotype plus genotype-environment (GGE) interactions were used to understand their suitability in the precise estimation of variance and their interaction. Our experiment used genotypes that represent the West Asia-North Africa (W

Comparative Physiological and Metabolic Analysis Reveals a Complex Mechanism Involved in Drought Tolerance in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Induced by PGPR and PGRs.

The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and plant growth regulators (PGRs) can be applied to improve the growth and productivity of plants, with potential to be used for genetic improvement of drought tolerance. However, for genetic improvement to be achieved, a solid understanding of the physiological and biochemical changes in plants induced by PGPR and PGR is required. The present study was carried out to investigate the role of PGPR and PGRs on the physiology and biochemical changes in chickpea grown under drought stress conditions and their association with drought tolerance. Calcium and ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid mitigate toxicity and alteration of gene expression associated with cadmium stress in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) shoots.

In the aim to estimate the protective role of calcium (Ca) and ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) against cadmium (Cd)-induced damage, chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seeds were exposed to 200 μM Cd stress for 6 days or 3 days then subjected to co-treatment of the metal with either 100 mM CaCl2 or 100 μM EGTA for 3 additional days. The addition of Ca and EGTA improved seedling growth. This protecting effect was correlated to the alleviation of the metal-induced oxidative stress, exemplified by the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contents. Besides, Ca and EGTA stimulated thioredoxin (T

Investigating the impact of ultrasound-assisted extraction on the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) peptides: In vitro, in silico, and acute toxicity study.

This study aimed to assess the isolation, purification, characterization and acute toxicity study of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) peptides with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory (ACE-I) activity prepared through ultrasound-assisted hydrolysis by alcalase. The ultrasonicated chickpea protein hydrolysate (UCPH) was purified sequentially using ultrafiltration (UF) and fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC). The <3 kDa fraction (UCPH-1) from UF, showing vigorous ACE-I activity (85.82 % ± 0.03, IC₅₀: 0.35 mg/mL), was further purified by FPLC. The most active FPLC fraction, F6 (95.76 % ±

Mirubactin-like siderophore-Fe complex from Amycolatopsis lurida strain 407 is associated with improved plant Fe status and yield in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) under in vitro conditions.

Iron deficiency limits legume production on calcareous soils, and commonly used synthetic iron chelates (e.g., Fe-EDTA) are effective but non-biodegradable and may mobilize toxic metals. Microbial siderophores offer an environmentally sound alternative, yet their direct application as biofertilizers remains underexplored. Here, we evaluated the iron-carrying siderophore produced by Amycolatopsis lurida strain 407 as a biofertilizer for chickpea. Siderophore extracts were quantified and characterized by the CAS assay, Fe (III)-ICP-OES, Arnow and FeCl₃ tests, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and genome mini

Integrated Breeding Approaches for Ascochyta Blight Resistance in Chickpea.

Ascochyta blight (AB), caused by the necrotrophic fungus [Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Labr.], is one of the most destructive diseases of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), causing yield losses of up to 100% under favorable conditions. The pathogen possesses a heterothallic mating system with two mating-type idiomorphs, MAT1-1 and MAT1-2, which contribute to high genetic diversity and the frequent breakdown of host resistance. This review summarizes current knowledge of AB biology, epidemiology, and management, highlighting recent advances in molecular diagnostics, host-pathogen interactions, and popu

Screening and detection of biomarkers in chickpea plants exposed to chromium and cadmium.

A broad screening protocol, covering the most general phytochemical groups of compounds, was developed on the basis of high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC). A total of six TLC systems, comprising three derivatization reagents, two stationary phases and two mobile phases, were included. The screening method was applied for the identification of biomarkers in the chickpea plant exposed to cadmium and chromium. The biomarkers were selected on the basis of significant changes (0.26-4.6 fold) in concentration levels of phytochemicals. Totally, five different amino acids, three organic

Carboxymethyl chitosan-N-alkylimine derivatives: Synthesis, characterization and use for preservation of symbiotic biofertilizer bacteria on chickpea seeds.

A series of carboxymethyl chitosan-N-alkylimine derivatives with side chain length of 4 to 10 carbons (CMCS-n, n = 4, 6, 8, 10) was prepared in a one-step solvent-free synthesis using Schiff base chemistry. The modified polysaccharides were characterized by their spectral, thermal and physical properties. The prepared polymers demonstrated an ability to spontaneous self-assembly with a clear correlation between critical aggregation concentration and the chain length of the alkyl substituent. N-alkylimine-CMCS derivatives were found to deliver hydrophobic (curcumin) and hydrophilic (ascorbic ac

Toward Accurate Detection: Protocol Adjustment for Ascochyta rabiei in Chickpea Seeds.

This set of protocols was developed to detect Ascochyta rabiei, the fungus responsible for chickpea blight, in seeds. Given the significant impact of this disease and its potential to cause complete crop loss, even at low inoculum levels, optimizing detection protocols is crucial. This article proposes adjustments to key variables of a basic agar plate test-disinfection method, incubation, illumination, and culture medium-to improve microscopic identification (mainly using a stereomicroscope) and enhance differential growth of A. rabiei relative to other seed-borne fungi. Each step was careful

Distinct thermal patterns to detect and quantify trace levels of wheat flour mixed into ground chickpeas.

This paper combines intelligent algorithms based on a residual neural network (ResNet34) to process thermographic images. This integration is aimed at detecting traces of wheat flour, in concentrations from 1 to 50 ppm, mixed into chickpea flour. Using an image database of over 16 thousand samples to train the ResNet34, and 1712 images to blindly test it, the optimized intelligent algorithm is able to classify the thermographic images into 14 classes according to the concentration of wheat flour at a 99.0% correct classification rate. These results open the door to the development of a simple,

Micronutrient Seed Coatings of Layered Double Hydroxides Overcome Seedling Toxicity and Improve Micronutrient Uptake in Comparison with Soluble Micronutrient Coatings.

Zinc (Zn), boron (B), and molybdenum (Mo) are micronutrients, essential to crops, which can be efficiently applied to crops via seed coatings. However, fast micronutrient release from soluble seed coatings brings seedling toxicity risks. Hence, this study developed novel Zn-B-Mo slow-release seed coating compounds, i.e., nanostructured Zn2Al or Zn3Al-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) loaded with (poly)borate and molybdate. Assessment of the micronutrient release properties showed that both LDH compounds gradually dissolved at a pH of ∼ 4.5, releasing Zn, B, and Mo, while Zn3Al-B-Mo released Mo

Innovative Emerging Technologies for Pulse Flour Functionalization: A Comparison With Conventional Thermal and Biological Techniques.

Pulse flours, such as those from peas, beans, and chickpeas, are highly valued for their nutritional density, making them essential for meeting the rising global demand for plant-based and gluten-free foods. Despite these nutritional advantages, industrial use is limited by specific sensorial, nutritional, and technological constraints. Overcoming these challenges requires targeted functionalization strategies designed to impart improved and predictable techno-functional properties. This review describes the characteristics of pulse flours and assesses both conventional (thermal, biological, a
