BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education in family medicine clerkships during medical school. Our study aimed to describe coverage of PrEP education in family medicine clerkships and explore barriers if this education was absent.
METHODS: Data were collected through the 2023 Council of Academic Family Medicine (CAFM) Education Research Alliance (CERA) Family Medicine Clerkship Director Survey. We inquired about provision of PrEP to patients, faculty expertise with PrEP, PrEP curriculum in the clerkship, barri

BACKGROUND: Many different components factor into the final grade assigned for the internal medicine clerkship. Failure of one or more of these requires consideration of remedial measures.
PURPOSE: To determine which assessment components are used to assign students a passing grade for the clerkship and what remediation measures are required when students do not pass a component.
METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) institutional members was conducted in April 2011. The survey included sections on remediation, grading practices, and de

UNLABELLED: The clerkship represents the initial stage of medical students' clinical practice, during which clinical reasoning training is emphasized. However, clinical reasoning training during the clerkship encounters several challenges, including limited teaching time and difficulties in adapting to the clinical environment. We developed a three-step clinical reasoning course based on David Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle model to bridge the learning gaps in the existing clerkship model and then evaluated its impact on performance in clerkship summative evaluations. The three-step clinic

INTRODUCTION: Critical care competencies are increasingly relevant across specialties, yet structured exposure in undergraduate medical education (UME) remains variable. We describe the design, implementation, and early outcomes of a four-week, modular ICU clerkship.
METHODS: We implemented a multidisciplinary ICU clerkship integrating clinical immersion, protected weekly didactics, asynchronous learning, high-fidelity simulation, health equity rounds, and palliative care debriefing. Objectives were aligned with Delphi-derived undergraduate critical care competencies and AAMC Entrustable Prof

INTRODUCTION: Pre-clinical involvement in procedural training is an essential part of medical school curricula and represents a core competency for medical students entering clerkships and residency. To prepare students for clerkships, "transition to clerkships" courses have been implemented just prior to entering the clinical setting. Despite this additional training, medical students often experience a lack of confidence in procedural skills. The purpose of this study is to determine whether expanding medical student exposure to procedural skills throughout the pre-clinical years improves co

BACKGROUND: Surgical educators have worked to manage the hopes and fears as well as the recurring rumors that plague the surgical clerkship. It is not known if this has effected change over time.
METHODS: We gathered information on hopes, fears, and rumors during our clerkship orientations from 2017 to 2019 using anonymous polling software with real-time feedback. We analyzed 468 responses using qualitative content analysis.
RESULTS: Students hoped for practical skills acquisition, self-improvement, and understanding the surgical profession. They feared lack of time and knowledge, burnout, m

OBJECTIVE: To provide preclinical medical students early access to otolaryngologists to learn about the specialty, facilitate acquisition of clinical skills, and provide one-on-one mentorship.
METHODS: Students are matched with a single otolaryngology faculty mentor from The Ohio State University/Nationwide Children's Hospital and attend 8 hours per month in the clinic or operating room, monthly lectures, and rounds, and they give a final presentation. Mentors complete performance evaluations, and surveys are administered longitudinally until Match Day.
RESULTS: Thirty-five students and 17 f

Students with physical disabilities are underrepresented in medicine, driven in part by ableist beliefs about the ability of individuals with disabilities to complete procedure-based or surgically oriented clerkships, including obstetrics and gynecology (Ob/Gyn). There is a growing commitment to disability inclusion by medical and specialty training associations. Yet published case studies and accommodation protocols for medical student wheelchair users navigating an Ob/Gyn clerkship are absent in the literature. This article describes successful disability inclusion for an Ob/Gyn clerkship, i

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is an important global public health issue, and early warning signs are often overlooked by clinical healthcare providers because of their limited experience. Injuries such as abusive head trauma (AHT), bruising, burns, and fractures are common and highly suggestive indicators of child abuse. Therefore, it is essential to improve healthcare providers’ ability to recognize abusive injuries. To compare the learning outcomes of clerkship students and resident physicians after participating in a training course on recognizing child abuse–related injuries, and to evaluate im

PURPOSE: Standardized end-of-clerkship examinations typically occur on the last day of the clerkship. However, recent trends toward time-varying competency-based medical education have offered students more test scheduling flexibility, creating an opportunity to study the impact of student-selected examination timing.
METHOD: Starting with the graduating class of 2018, students took the required standardized end-of-core clerkship examinations at any available time they chose during their clinical years. Before this change, these examinations were administered to all students on the last day o

BACKGROUND: Early clinical exposure allows undergraduate medical students to encounter authentic clinical practice, but novice learners may not know what to observe or how to interpret complex clinical events. This challenge is particularly relevant in anesthesiology, where many professional activities are embedded in perioperative workflow and are not immediately visible to beginners. This study examined whether a structured perioperative observation model was associated with improved learning objective clarity and self-reported purposeful observation during early anesthesiology clinical expo

With increased demands for medical aesthetics procedures and the sudden profusion of newly licensed, and unlicensed, providers who are performing these medical aesthetics procedures also comes the responsibility to shift to collective competence. Collective competence refers to what occurs among professionals in action, emphasizing the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and perceptions among those who are providing services to the medical aesthetics client. Registered nurses and medical students are not taught to perform cosmetic procedures in basic nursing or medical programs and thus require

OBJECTIVE: Medical students are expected to achieve proficiency in a prescribed set of technical skills during surgical clerkship. However, available literature indicates students routinely report a lack of confidence and proficiency in these skills. Our study aims to identify barriers to technical skill development encountered by medical students during surgical clerkship with the goal of developing interventions to address these barriers.
DESIGN: Three hundred and forty two medical students were surveyed about their experience learning and performing technical skills during surgical clerksh

Cardiac auscultation is an important skill for medical students to master but students' exposure to cardiac auscultation is often unmonitored. The objective of this study was to gather data at the point of care about students' cardiac auscultation experience on a required medicine rotation using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) 'murmur form'. During an eight-month period, 120 M3 students used the authors' PDA-based learning tool to record information on 940 heart sounds and murmurs. Some 93% of all heart sounds/murmurs reported by students were verified by either a faculty member (56%) or a

PURPOSE: To determine if there is an association between several commonly obtained premedical school and medical school measures and board certification performance. We specifically included measures from our institution for which we have predictive validity evidence into the internship year. We hypothesized that board certification would be most likely to be associated with clinical measures of performance during medical school, and with scores on standardized tests, whether before or during medical school.
METHODS: Achieving board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties sp
