Effect of diuretics on fetal growth: A drug effect or confounding by indication? Pooled Danish and Scottish cohort data.

AIMS: The diabetogenic effect of diuretics, as well as the indication for prescribing them, may impact on fetal growth. We analysed whether the purchase of prescription drugs for diuretics during pregnancy was associated with measures of fetal growth. METHODS: During 1991-98 all women who purchased prescription drugs for diuretics during pregnancy were identified in the Northern Jutland Prescription Database (NJDP), Denmark, and in the Medicines Monitoring Unit's Database (MEMO), Scotland. Information on birth weight and gestational age was obtained from the Danish Birth Registry, the Danish

The effect of hypoprolactinemia on cardiometabolic effects of rosuvastatin in men: A matched Cohort Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Low prolactin levels are associated with an increased risk of vascular and metabolic diseases. Women with prolactin deficiency appear to have attenuated responses to lipid-lowering and insulin-sensitizing medications. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of hypoprolactinemia on the cardiometabolic effects of rosuvastatin in men. METHODS: Three groups of men with indications for statin therapy were included. Group 1 comprised 16 individuals with prolactin levels below 3 ng/mL, while groups 2 (n = 23) and 3 (n = 37) included patients with levels between 3 and 20 ng/mL. Participants

Dose-dependent transcriptional effects of lithium and adverse effect burden in a psychiatric cohort.

Lithium is the first-line treatment for bipolar disorder (BD), but there is a large variation in response rate and adverse effects. Although the molecular effects of lithium have been studied extensively, the specific mechanisms of action remain unclear. In particular, the molecular changes underlying lithium adverse effects are little known. Multiple linear regression analyses of lithium serum concentrations and global gene expression levels in whole blood were carried out using a large case-control sample (n = 1450). Self-reported adverse effects of lithium were assessed with the "Udvalg for

Birth cohort effects in adults associated with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: In the 2023-24 influenza season, adults born in the 1957-1985 birth cohort had the lowest vaccine effectiveness (VE) against A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses than other age groups, including those in the 1986-2005 birth cohort. Here, we investigated A(H1N1)pdm09 antibody levels in sera collected from influenza cases and controls to explain the birth cohort effect of the low VE. METHODS: Acute sera within 7 days and convalescent sera at 28 days post-symptom onset were collected from adult patients (18-66 years, 1986-2005 and 1957-1985 birth cohorts) enrolled in the US Influenza VE Network stud

Effect of androgen abuse on sleep apnea in men: a prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Androgen abuse has been suggested to adversely affect sleep-disordered breathing, but prospective real-world data in androgen abusers are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of androgen abuse on sleep-disordered breathing. METHODS: Adult men planning a self-initiated androgen cycle were evaluated before, at approximately week 8 of their cycle, and approximately three months after cycle cessation. Sleep was assessed using ambulatory WatchPAT monitoring. The primary outcome was change in the peripheral arterial tone-derived apnea-hypopnea index (pAHI). Secondary

GlycA as an Effect Modifier of Protein-Mortality Associations: A Prospective Cohort Study.

The heterogeneity in health effects of circulating proteins remained unclear. Previous studies have identified that glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA), a stable biomarker of inflammation, were associated with risks of mortality and chronic diseases. However, it remained unclear whether the health risks of proteins may differ across people with varied GlycA levels. Based on the multi-omics profiling of the UK Biobank prospective cohort, we evaluated whether GlycA statistically modifies the protein-mortality associations. In the discovery dataset (n = 24,134), we observed that GlycA significantly modi

Effect of Prophylactic Antibiotics on K-Wire-Associated Infection: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Introduction Orthopaedic surgeons frequently manipulate and fix fractured bones into place using metal pins known as Kirschner wires (K-wires). The percutaneous placement of these wires makes them susceptible to infection at the pin site. Some surgeons choose to administer antibiotics prophylactically to prevent pin-site infection, while others do not; this variability is due to a lack of conclusive evidence in support of either practice. This study aims to investigate whether prophylactic antibiotics reduce the incidence of pin site infection by comparing those who received prophylaxis with t
