In vitro susceptibility of Conidiobolus lamprauges recovered from sheep to antifungal agents.

Data regarding the susceptibility of Conidiobolus lamprauges is limited and there is no consensus about the optimal treatment for infections caused by Conidiobolus spp. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of six C. lamprauges strains isolated from sheep conidiobolomycosis to amphotericin B, ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, anidulafungin, caspofungin, micafungin, flucytosine, and terbinafine using the CLSI M38-A2 microdilution technique. Terbinafine was the most active (MIC range <0.06-0.5 μg/mL). Resistanc

Rhino-orbitocerebral zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus incongruus in an immunocompromised patient in Germany.

Mucorales (subphylum Mucoromycotina) are well-known agents of invasive mucormycosis, whereas Entomophthorales (subphylum Entomophthoromycotina) are rarely encountered in human diseases in temperate zones. Here we report a fatal case of invasive rhino-orbitocerebral entomophthoramycosis caused by Conidiobolus incongruus in a 78-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome.

Conidiobolus spp.: A Rare Pathogen Causing Rhino-Facial Entomophthoramycosis: A Case Series.

Rhinofacial entomophthoramycosis is a rare chronic fungal infection caused by Conidiobolus spp., primarily affecting the nasal and facial regions of immunocompetent individuals in tropical and subtropical areas. This case series describes five patients diagnosed with this condition over three years at a district hospital. Patients presented with progressive rhinofacial swelling, nasal obstruction, and eosinophilia. Diagnosis was confirmed through fungal cultures on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar and Lactophenol Cotton Blue mounts, which identified characteristic conidia. Treatment included potassium

Morphologic and phylogenetic characterization of Conidiobolus lamprauges recovered from infected sheep.

Conidiobolus lamprauges, a soil and plant entomophthoralean fungus, has been reported only in a horse and, more recently, in sheep with rhinopharyngeal entomophthoramycosis. Thus, little information is available to enable proper identification of this pathogen and its differentiation from other saprotrophic and pathogenic Conidiobolus species. Using classical mycological tools and molecular methodologies, we report for the first time the taxonomic and phylogenetic description of three C. lamprauges isolates recovered from sheep with rhinopharyngeal entomophthoramycosis. The distinctive clinica

Concurrent Infections of Conidiobolus Coronatus with Disseminated Tuberculosis Presenting as Bilateral Orbital Cellulitis.

Zygomycetes species contains two orders of organisms that infect humans, namely Mucorales and Entomophthorales. Entomophthorales cause chronic infection in immunocompetent patients, invading subcutaneous tissues but are non-angioinvasive. This includes Basidiobolus ranarum, Conidiobolus incongruus and Conidiobolus coronatus. We report a case of disseminated tuberculosis with Conidiobolus coronatus infection presenting as orbital cellulitis in an adolescent.

Successful Treatment of Invasive Conidiobolus Infection During Therapy for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Invasive fungal infections are a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic malignancies. Conidiobolus species are molds within the order Entomophthorales and may disseminate to become rapidly fatal in immunocompromised individuals. This species of fungal infections are often multidrug resistant (MDR) and present unique therapeutic challenges. Reports of Conidiobolus infections are rare in pediatric oncology. We report the successful treatment of an adolescent male with B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia and MDR invasive sinopulmonary Conidiobolus infection with emphasis

Systemic Conidiobolus incongruus infection and hypertrophic osteopathy in a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

In populations where vitamin A availability from food is low, infectious diseases can precipitate vitamin A deficiency by decreasing intake, decreasing absorption, and increasing excretion. Infectious diseases that induce the acute-phase response also impair the assessment of vitamin A status by transiently depressing serum retinol concentrations. Vitamin A deficiency impairs innate immunity by impeding normal regeneration of mucosal barriers damaged by infection, and by diminishing the function of neutrophils, macrophages, and natural killer cells. Vitamin A is also required for adaptive immu

Detection of villous conidia of Conidiobolus coronatus in a blood sample by scanning electron microscopy investigation.

Conidiobolus coronatus is a major insect pathogen belonging to the fungal order Entomophthorales, causing a rare subcutaneous infection of the nasofacial region, resulting in swelling of predominantly the nose, mouth, and perinasal tissue. Later in the course of the infection firm, painless, subcutaneous nodules develop that are attached to the underlying tissues but not to the skin. No morphological studies are available in the literature on the morphology of C. coronatus in vivo and all morphological studies have been conducted on in vitro cultures. Here the authors report on the ultrastruct

First description of the disease by Conidiobolus osmodes on Tipula paludosa larvae with the report of a natural epizootic.

A new fungal pathogen of Tipula paludosa (Tipulidae: Diptera) larvae, Conidiobolus osmodes (Ancylistaceae: Entomophthorales), was found during a survey of tipulid larval pathogens in Northumbria and Cumbria in England in 1997-1999. The fungus caused an epizootic in a population at Close House during autumn 1999 and spring 2000 with prevalence rising fourfold reaching about 40% in April 2000. The disease development was presented and the fungus was described from naturally infected larvae and artificial cultures.

Rhinofacial zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus: a case report including in vitro sensitivity to antimycotic agents.

A case of zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus, occurring in a 31-year-old priest from the Ivory Coast, is reported. Lesions eventually resolved after 2 1/2 years, during which the patient was variously treated with intravenous amphotericin B and miconazole as well as surgical resection. It is difficult to be certain which, if any, of these treatments contributed to resolution of lesions. A report of in vitro sensitivity data to a variety of antifungal agents is included.

Insect cuticular compounds affect Conidiobolus coronatus (Entomopthorales) sporulation and the activity of enzymes involved in fungal infection.

Mycoses are a global problem that affects humans and animals. In the present study, the entomopathogenic soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Entomophthorales), infecting in tropics also humans, sheep and horses, was cultivated with the addition of insect cuticular compounds (CCs) previously detected in the cuticle of C. coronatus-resistant fly species (C10-C30 fatty alcohols, butyl oleate, butyl stearate, glycerol oleate, squalene, tocopherol acetate). Our findings indicate that CCs have diversified and complex effects on the growth and sporulation of C. coronatus and its ability to infect the

Morphological and Chemical Changes in the Hemolymph of the Wax Moth Galleria mellonella Infected by the Entomopathogenic Fungus Conidiobolus coronatus.

Hemolymph enables communication between organs in insects and ensures necessary coordination and homeostasis. Its composition can provide important information about the physiological state of an insect and can have diagnostic significance, which might be particularly important in the case of harmful insects subjected to biological control. Galleria mellonella Linnaeus 1758 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a global pest to honey bee colonies. The hemolymph of its larvae was examined after infection with the soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Constantin) Batko 1964 (Entomophthorales). It was found
