Readability of informed consent forms from ClinicalTrials.gov in ketamine clinical trials for mental health conditions: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring participants understand informed consent forms (ICFs) is a core ethical requirement of clinical research, particularly in psychiatry, where cognitive and affective symptoms can compromise decisional capacity. As ketamine-based interventions are increasingly studied for mental health conditions, the readability of consent materials in these trials warrants systematic evaluation. OBJECTIVES: To assess the readability and linguistic complexity of ICFs from ClinicalTrials.gov used in ketamine clinical trials for mental health conditions. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis. ME

Preparing accessible and understandable clinical research participant information leaflets and consent forms: a set of guidelines from an expert consensus conference.

BACKGROUND: In line with Good Clinical Practice and the Declaration of Helsinki, it is the investigator's responsibility to ensure that research participants are sufficiently informed, to enable the provision of informed consent. The Participant Information Leaflet/Informed Consent Form is key to facilitating this communication process. Although studies have indicated that clinical research Participant Information Leaflets/Informed Consent Forms are not optimal in terms of accessibility, there is little or no specific guidance available. The aim of this research was to propose and agree a set

Improving Risk Documentation in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Single-Centre Before-and-After Study of a Pre-printed Consent Form.

INTRODUCTION: Informed consent is essential in surgery, requiring patients to receive clear information about risks, benefits, and alternatives. For laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the most commonly performed general surgical procedure in the UK, studies highlight inconsistencies in risk disclosure, with frequent omission of uncommon but serious complications. Such omissions may compromise patient understanding, shared decision-making, and medico-legal protection. This study aimed to assess whether a pre-printed, procedure-specific consent form could improve compliance with risk documentation.

Patch test informed consent form: position statement by European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Task Force on Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, an international consensus is lacking regarding the development of an adequate informed consent form for a patch test (PT) and the information that should be included in such document. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to reach a consensus on the specific points that need to be addressed in a PT consent form. METHODS: A Delphi survey, comprising 2 rounds and 1 final discussion, was used to gather and analyse data, which was conducted over the Internet. Development, piloting, and evaluation of an evidence-based informed consent form for total knee arthroplasty (EvAb-Pilot): a protocol for a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Practitioners frequently use informed consent forms to support the physician-patient communication and the informed consent process. Informed consent for surgery often focuses on risk centered information due to high liability risks for treatment errors. This may affect patients' anxiety of adverse events and the nocebo effect. This study focuses on the optimization of pre-surgical information on risks and complications, and at the same time reconciles these information with legal requirements. METHODS: The development, piloting, and evaluation of evidence-based informed consent f

[Legal contentions in thyroid surgery. Kind of preoperative information to the patients].

The question of patients information and the achievement of an informed consent to medical and/or surgical treatment by the patient still represents one of the main issue of the medical profession, having greater importance nowadays in respect to the past regarding the relationship doctor-patient and to the diagnostic-therapeutic approach to the patient. Written informed consent is a pre requisite for surgical intervention as it provides the forum for the patient to appreciate implications of the procedure and the doctor to explain details and effects of the surgery. Patients refusal is, nowad

Rehearsal's effect on recall and comprehension of orthodontic informed consent.

INTRODUCTION: Proper informed consent allows patients to take an active role in their own treatment decisions, and enhanced compliance might improve treatment outcomes. The objective of this research was to determine if handwritten rehearsal of core and custom consent items would increase short-term recall and comprehension. METHODS: A total of 90 patient-parent pairs were randomly assigned to 2 groups. After case presentation, each subject was provided 10 minutes to read a modified informed consent document. Group A received visual printouts containing the 4 core elements (root resorption, d

Informed consent, Israel 2008--is it informed? The case of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.

BACKGROUND: The rate of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer procedures in Israelis the highest among industrialized countries. The procedure has the potential to make treated patients forever happy, should the desired result occur. It also entails, however, numerous potential complications. Patients who are candidates for the procedure should fully understand both potential desired and undesired results, and should give their consent based on this understanding. The question whether currently used informed consent forms for these procedures indeed serve this purpose is, however, open.

Orthodontic informed consent for impacted teeth.

Orthodontists routinely refer patients to oral surgeons or periodontists for exposure of impacted or ectopic teeth. Although other specialists perform these procedures, the orthodontist could have a legal responsibility to obtain informed consent, depending on how the referral orders are written. The purpose of this article is to discuss some considerations of the informed consent process for surgical exposure and alignment of impacted or ectopic teeth, and to suggest a template for an informed consent form for this use.

Family practitioners' immunization consent practice. Washington State, 1986.

Of 400 Washington State family practitioners surveyed in 1986, 46% of those who give routine immunizations reported that they require written parental consent before administering vaccine. In all, 57% of respondents said they discuss diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, measles-mumps-rubella, and oral polio vaccine with their patients. Nearly half provide written information on these immunizations, except for inactivated polio vaccine, for which fewer than 20% of the physicians surveyed provide verbal or written information.

Influence of a Preadmission Procedure-Specific Consent Document on Patient Recall of Informed Consent at 4 Weeks After Total Hip Replacement: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Consent is a legal and ethical requirement for undertaking surgical procedures; however, the literature suggests that there continues to be poor recall among patients of the surgical risks discussed during the consent process. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the addition of a preadmission procedure-specific consent document would improve patient recall of surgical risks at 4 weeks after total hip replacement in patients consented with a procedure-specific consent form.
