Frequency of Candida species in Papanicolaou smears taken from Sudanese oral hormonal contraceptives users.

The aim of our study was to compare the numbers of Candida detected in Pap smears from Sudanese users of oral contraceptives (OCs) with non-users of OCs. The frequency of Candida observed in Pap smears was assessed among 158 Sudanese women of whom 108 were OCs users, subsequently termed cases, and the remaining 50 who were not OCs users, subsequently termed controls. Of the 158 smears, Candida were observed in 28 (17%) of the study subjects of whom 27 (25%) were OCs users compared to 1 (2%) among non-OCs users. We concluded that OCs may increase the number of Candida present, which suggests th

Oral hormonal contraceptives affect the concentration and composition of urinary glycosaminoglycans in young women.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary glycosaminoglycans (uGAG) have protective effects against urinary tract disorders. Here we investigated whether oral hormonal contraceptives (OC) affect uGAG excretion. METHODS: Urine specimens were from young women regularly taking: ethinyl estradiol + drospirenone, n = 9; ethinyl estradiol + cyproterone acetate, n = 9; and ethinyl estradiol + gestodene, n = 7. Controls were from ten women not taking OC. Total uGAG was assayed as hexuronic acid/urinary creatinine. Sulfated uGAG species was determined by electrophoresis. RESULTS: Unlike controls, total uG

Hormonal content and potency of oral contraceptives and breast cancer risk among young women.

Recent use of oral contraceptive pills is associated with a modest risk of breast cancer among very young women. In this US population-based case-control study, we evaluated whether the excess risk associated with recent oral contraceptive use is ubiquitous for all pill types or attributable to specific oral contraceptive preparations. Hormonal content and potency of combination oral contraceptives used for the longest duration within 5 years of interview for breast cancer cases aged 20-44 years (N=1640) were compared with age-matched community controls (N=1492). Women who recently used oral c

Extended regimens of the contraceptive vaginal ring versus hormonal oral contraceptives: effects on lipid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Combined oral contraceptives used in an extended regimen have been studied because of their potential benefits; however, there have been few publications on extended regimens of contraceptive vaginal rings. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of these two extended regimens on the lipid metabolism of women using these contraceptive methods during 1 year. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective study enrolled 150 women: 75 used a vaginal contraceptive ring (11.7 mg etonogestrel and 2.7 mg ethinyl estradiol), and 75 used oral contraceptives (30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 150 mg des

Association of oral contraceptives and tubal ligation with antimüllerian hormone.

OBJECTIVE: Oral contraceptives (OCs) and tubal ligation are commonly used methods of contraception that may impact ovarian function. Few studies have examined the association of these factors with antimüllerian hormone (AMH), a marker of ovarian aging. METHODS: We examined the association of OC use and tubal ligation with AMH in the Nurses' Health Study II prospective cohort among a subset of 1,420 premenopausal participants who provided a blood sample in 1996-1999. History of OC use and tubal ligation were reported in 1989 and updated every 2 years until blood collection. We utilized general

Antimullerian hormone and obesity: insights in oral contraceptive users.

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to examine the impact of oral contraceptives (OCs) on serum antimullerian hormone (AMH) levels by obesity status in reproductive-age women. STUDY DESIGN: Ovulatory women, ages 18-35 years, of normal (<25 kg/m(2); n=10) and obese (>30 kg/m(2); n=10) body mass index (BMI) received a low-dose OC (20 mcg ethinyl estradiol/100 mcg levonorgestrel) for two cycles. Serum samples obtained at several time points during active pill use and hormone-free intervals were analyzed for AMH, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol and inhibin

Hormonal therapy for acne using oral contraceptive pills.

The etiology of acne vulgaris is multifactorial and complex. The four key factors involved in the development of acne include follicular plugging, inflammation, the presence and activity of Propionibacterium acnes, and sebum. Androgen hormones stimulate the sebaceous gland and promote sebum excretion. Therefore, therapies that have an overall antiandrogen effect, like combination oral contraceptive pills, may be useful in the management of acne vulgaris. Numerous combination oral contraceptive pills have been evaluated in the treatment of acne vulgaris and have been found to be effective. With

Oral Contraceptives, Hormone Replacement Therapy, and Stroke Risk.

BACKGROUND: Millions of women worldwide use exogenous hormones as oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy. Still, time-dependent and long-term consequences of exogenous hormones on stroke risk remains unclear. METHODS: We examined the association between self-reported oral contraceptive and hormone replacement therapy use and stroke risk in 257 194 women from the UK Biobank, born between 1939 and 1970. Outcomes included any type of stroke, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Exposures were analyzed as time-varying variables in Cox regression mode

Not All Hepatocellular Adenomas are Caused by the Hormonal Oral Contraceptive.

This is a case report of a female patient with multiple hepatocellular adenomas secondary to the glycogen storage disease 1a with asymptomatic and late adult-onset presentation. Even though the patient was taking a hormonal oral contraceptive, it was important to identify the genetic disorder and ensure adequate metabolic control which is considered a modifier of the adenoma formation and progression. It is also imperative that the patient gets monitored for the adenoma-to-hepatocellular carcinoma transformation.

A primer on the hormone-free interval for combined oral contraceptives.

BACKGROUND: The dosing, schedules, and other aspects of combined oral contraceptive (COC) design have evolved in recent years to address a variety of issues including short- and long-term safety, bleeding profiles, and contraceptive efficacy. In particular, several newer formulations have altered the length of the hormone-free interval (HFI), in order to minimize two key undesired effects that occur during this time: hormone-withdrawal-associated symptoms (HWaS) and follicular development. OBJECTIVE: This primer reviews our current understanding of the key biological processes that occur duri

Intrauterine devices: an effective alternative to oral hormonal contraception.

(1) Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are placed in the uterine cavity with the objective of providing long-term contraception, mainly by preventing fertilisation. The best-known IUDs contain copper, but there is also an IUD delivering levonorgestrel, a progestin; (2) How effective are these devices, and what are their adverse effects? To answer these questions, we analysed the literature using the standard Prescrire methodology; (3) T-shaped copper IUDs, with a copper surface area of 380 mm2 on 3 arms, and the levonorgestrel-releasing device, have similar contraceptive efficacy as combined oral con

[Ocular complications of hormonal treatments: oral contraception and menopausal hormonal replacement therapy].

Numerous reports have described ocular complications of sex hormone preparations, particularly after the appearance of the oral contraceptive pill. The most serious complications are vascular occlusions such as central retinal vein or artery occlusion and acute ischemic optic neuropathy. In these cases, permanent visual loss may occur. Combined oral contraceptives have been reported to increase the incidence of these complications but it remains very low. It seems to lessen with the decrease in the estrogen dosage and the use of third-generation progestins. Conversely, post-menopausal hormone
