Four month-old foals were infected orally with 75 mL of a suspension of 5.0 x 10(8)Corynebacterium equi per mL. Two foals were killed after ten days and had scanty number of C. equi in the caeco-colic lymph nodes. No C. equi were recovered from the other two foals, killed 20 days after infection. No gross pathological change was detected in these four foals, although mild microscopic lesions were seen in the ileum of one foal. Results of lymphocyte blastogenesis using peripheral blood lymphocytes and C. equi antigens showed, however, that lymphocytes became sensitized to C. equi following this

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPL) of the liver is a rare benign clinicopathologic entity, which has been associated with infectious conditions, including alimentary, digestive tract and mouth infections. We report a new case, where a patient developed hepatic IPL that revealed endometritis related to Corynebacterium infection; the patient had a favorable outcome of hepatic IPL after appropriate antibiotic therapy initiation. Our findings therefore confirm that antibiotic therapy may be effective in patients with hepatic IPL associated with underlying infections, avoiding unnecessary surgery. Our

A 58-year-old woman was admitted due to a pseudomembranous pharyngitis. The patient had not been vaccinated against diphtheria. Corynebacterium ulcerans was cultured from a throat swab. The production of diphtheria toxin by these bacteria was demonstrated with PCR and an immunoprecipitation test. The patient was cared for in respiratory isolation and was treated with benzylpenicillin. She quickly recovered and was discharged four days after admission. A contact investigation did not reveal any dissemination of the toxin-producing C. ulcerans and a source was not found. In spite of the large-sc

Urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum is a rarely recognised condition in veterinary medicine. This report describes a case in a 13-month-old dog which presented with a history of dysuria and haematuria. C urealyticum was identified as the cause of UTI. The clinical, radiological and ultrasonographic features and the results of urinalysis and urine bacteriological culture are described, as are the therapeutic challenges presented by this particular infection.

Here we report a case of Corynebacterium G1 group endocarditis following acute bpn in non immunodeficient host. The bacterial strain was isolated from the surgically removed heart valve. To our knowledge this is the first report of such an isolate. Recently recurrent peritonitis in CAPD were also ascribed to the same agent.

A Corynebacterium species consistently resistant to all antibiotic therapy except vancomycin caused bacteremia in 32 of 284 (11%) marrow transplant patients. Twenty-one patients had colonization or infection before bacteremia. Twenty-six of the 32 patients were males, and males older than 16 years were infected significantly more often than females over 16, or than all patient under 16. A case-control study showed that infected patients had greater exposure to antibiotics; more often had failure of engraftment and persistent granulocytopenia; were in laminar air-flow rooms less often; and had

Corynebacterium striatum (C. striatum) is a Gram-positive bacterium commonly colonizing the skin and mucosa in healthy individuals and hospitalized patients. Traditionally regarded as a contaminant, C. striatum is now increasingly recognized as a potential cause of clinical infections, especially after the coronavirus disease pandemic. It has emerged as a pathogen implicated in severe infections, including pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis, artificial joint infections, abdominal infections, and endocarditis. C. striatum has been reported in lower respiratory tract infections, mostly as a condi

Important uncertainties remain regarding the role of coinfection, asymptomatic carriage, and the contribution of toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae to clinical disease. This Letter to the Editor highlights several key unanswered questions and emphasises the need for a better understanding of this re-emerging infection to inform diagnosis, microbiological testing, clinical management, and public health responses.

Human infections with Corynebacterium diphtheriae species complex (CdSC) bacteria were rare in French Guiana until 2016, when the number of cases diagnosed increased. We conducted an epidemiologic, multicenter, retrospective study of all human CdSC infections diagnosed in French Guiana during January 1, 2016-December 31, 2021. A total of 64 infectious episodes were observed in 60 patients; 61 infections were caused by C. diphtheriae and 3 by C. ulcerans. Estimated incidence increased from 0.7 cases/100,000 population in 2016 to 7.7 cases/100,000 population in 2021. The mean patient age was 30.

The recently described Corynebacterium (C.) silvaticum is a diphtheria toxin (tox-) gene bearing species so far mainly found in wild boar and deers. Due to its close relationship to C. ulcerans a zoonotic potential has been proposed. To date, only two cases of human C. silvaticum infections have been reported in the literature. Here we present the case of a 63-year-old male game-hunting butcher with recurrent and difficult-to-treat axillary lymphadenitis and abscess formation. This case underlines the zoonotic potential of this novel member of the C. diphtheriae species complex and suggests zo

Five strains of an unknown, multidrug-resistant coryneform, gram-positive rod were isolated from blood, bronchial aspirate, and abscess specimens. Four of the five strains isolated were highly resistant to antimicrobial agents, including beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, quinolones, and tetracyclines, except for glycopeptides. In immunocompromised patients, bacteremia associated with this organism was rapidly fatal. This coryneform bacterium was nonmotile, lipophilic, and nonsaccharolytic. Lack of pyrazinamidase activity differentiated this organism from other lipophilic corynebacteri

Diphtheria is a disease with a long history that almost completely disappeared from developed countries. In addition, until 1987, systemic infections involving Corynebacterium diphtheriae were rare. However, in 1990, an epidemic occurred in Russia. These two circumstances have provided the stimulus to gain insight into the situation in France. In fact, between 1987 and 1993, a total of 59 C. diphtheriae strains were isolated. Epidemiological data were collected for patients from whom 40 strains were isolated from normally sterile sites, including 34 from blood cultures, and half of the bactere

We studied 12 coryneform isolates having similar biochemical profiles which did not permit their assignment to any recognized taxa. Human semen was the source for seven of these strains, whereas the other strains were isolated from urethra, urine, and blood specimens of adult male patients. These bacteria were found in significant quantities (10(4) to 10(5) CFU/ml) in semen specimens from infertile male patients with the diagnosis of prostatitis. These strains had characteristics of the genus Corynebacterium, such as 60 mol% G + C in the DNA and corynemycolic acids, meso-diaminopimelic acid, a

INTRODUCTION: Corynebacterium diphtheriae can cause various infections such as diphtheria, wound infections, septic arthritis, bacteraemia and endocarditis. Different virulence properties of the isolates might be related to different virulence factors expressed by the isolates. The objective of this study was to explore whether whole cell protein profiling might be useful in prediction of pathogenic properties of C. diphtheriae isolates.
METHODS: C. disphtheriae isolates collected from diphtheria, invasive and local infections and from asymptomatic carriers in Poland, France, New Caledonia an

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of targeted antibiotic therapy on clinical outcomes of patients with lower respiratory tract (LRT) infection with Corynebacterium striatum (C. striatum).
METHODS: A new propensity score-inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) cohort study was conducted by using 10-year data. The study included LRT infection patients with respiratory secretions cultured positive for C. striatum simultaneously. The primary outcome was all-cause hospital mortality; the secondary outcomes included hospital stay, ICU stay and ventilation time. The safety outcomes were drug-r

Corynebacterium striatum is considered a rare pathogen in infective endocarditis (IE). C. striatum is a Gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium found in the environment and human flora. It is part of the microbiota of the skin and nasal mucosa of humans and has been increasingly reported as the etiologic agent of community-acquired and nosocomial diseases. A 91-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of increased fatigue for a week. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a labile, echogenic appearance on the mitral valve that may be consistent with infective e

Corynebacterium ulcerans infection was recently recognized as a zoonosis. We present 2 cases of severe pneumonia complicated by diffuse pseudomembrane formation on the bronchus caused by C. ulcerans-producing diphtheria toxin. Our purpose is to alert medical professionals to the virulence of Corynebacterium species other than C. diphtheriae.

In the context of the European migrant crisis, more and more cases of cutaneous diphtheria are seen. A typical presentation includes painful cutaneous ulcerations with grayish-whitish pseudomembranes. Here we present 2 male Eritrean patients suffering from cutaneous nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae (patient 1) and Corynebacterium striatum (patient 2) infection.
