The field of cosmic radiation at low-Earth orbit (LEO) has a complex composition. It always contains a component of secondary charged particles, formed by the products of nuclear interactions of the primary high-energy radiation with the nuclei of spacecraft's shielding material, electronic components and biological matter on board. Generation of this secondary radiation can be observed in some track detectors in the form of "stars" formed by tracks-fragments with a common vertex. The energy absorbed by the medium in the region adjacent to the interaction vertex can reach abnormally high value

The impact of space radiation on health (SRHE) is extensive and significantly influences public health and space operations, making it essential to analyze global collaboration networks and track developmental trends over the last decade. However, bibliometric analysis in this area remains limited. This study aims to outline publication trends, citation patterns, major journals, key authors, institutional and national collaborations, and to explore emerging themes and future directions. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace, Bibliometrix in R, and VOSviewer on SRHE research fro

The roadmap for space exploration foresees longer journeys and further excursions outside low-Earth orbit as well as the establishment of permanent outposts on other celestial bodies, such as the Moon or Mars. The design of spacecrafts and habitats depends heavily on the mission scenario and must consider the radiation protection properties of the structural components as well as dedicated shielding. In fact, short- and long-term effects caused by exposure to cosmic radiation are now considered among the main health risks of space travel. One of the current strategies is to find multifunctiona

The Partner Agencies of the International Space Station (ISS) maintain separate career exposure limits and shared Flight Rules that control the ionising radiation exposures that crewmembers can experience due to ambient environments throughout their space missions. In low Earth orbit as well as further out in space, energetic ions referred to as galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) easily penetrate spacecraft and spacecraft contents and consequently are always present at low dose rates. Protons and electrons that are trapped in the Earth's geomagnetic field are encountered intermittently, and a rar

The Radiation monitoring system (RMS) continuously operated in various configurations since the launch of the Zvezda module of the International Space Station (ISS). The RMS consisted of 7 units, namely: the R-16 dosimeter, 4 DB-8 dosimeters, utility and data collection units. The obtained data covers a time of 22 years. This paper analyses the radiation environment variations on board the "Zvezda" module. Variations of the onboard daily dose rate associated with changes of ISS altitude and 11-year cycle galactic cosmic rays' variations are analyzed and discussed. It is shown that the observed

Ionizing radiation in general and mixed fields of space radiation in particular pose a risk of serious harm to human health. The risk of such adverse effects increases with the duration of the mission, and for all missions outside the protective properties of the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere. Accordingly, radiation protection is of central importance for all human spaceflight, which is recognized by all international space agencies. To date various systems, analyze and determine the exposure to ionizing radiation within the environment and to the crew onboard the International Space S

Occurrence level comparison of catastrophic failures due to radiation effects on electronic components or collision with space debris are studied in two types of satellites: cubesats and microsats. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) case studies are proposed, and the level of catastrophic failure occurrence is quantified for the same mission duration. The variation in the occurrence of failures is studied and there is a determination of which is more likely. Emphasis is placed on examining how an increase in space debris would affect the reliability of future space missions.

The dosimeter Liulin-MO for measuring the radiation environment onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is a module of the Fine Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND). Here we present results from measurements of the charged particle fluxes, dose rates and estimation of dose equivalent rates at ExoMars TGO Mars science orbit, provided by Liulin-MO from May 2018 to June 2022. The period of measurements covers the declining and minimum phases of the solar activity in 24th solar cycle and the rising phase of the 25th cycle. Compared are the radiation values of the galactic cosmic rays

This article summarizes a Symposium on 'Radiation risks of the central nervous system' held virtually at the 67th Annual Meeting of the Radiation Research Society, 3-6 October 2021. Repeated low-dose radiation exposure over a certain period could lead to reduced neuronal proliferation, altered neurogenesis, neuroinflammation and various neurological complications, including psychological consequences, necessitating further research in these areas. Four speakers from radiation biology, genetics and epidemiology presented the latest data from their studies seeking insights into this important to

Air carrier crews are occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation, principally from galactic cosmic radiation. To promote radiation safety in aviation the Federal Aviation Administration has: issued educational material on the nature of the radiation received during air travel; recommended radiation exposure limits for pregnant and nonpregnant aircrew members; developed computer programs that estimate for a given flight profile the amount of galactic radiation received on a current flight or on one flown at any time back to January 1958; published tables that enable aircrew members to estimat

Space radiation is considered the biggest threat to astronauts’ health in long-duration space missions, where the main concern is the potential carcinogenic effects from the continuous exposure to Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR). The quality factor ([Formula: see text]) of GCR presents the greatest uncertainty, complicating accurate risk assessment and the establishment of safe radiation exposure standards for astronauts in missions beyond low Earth orbit. This study uses a recently developed analytic microdosimetric model to calculate [Formula: see text] values for space radiation. The influence o

After having been an instrument of the Cold War, space exploration has become a major technological, scientific and societal challenge for a number of countries. With new projects to return to the Moon and go to Mars, radiobiologists have been called upon to better assess the risks linked to exposure to radiation emitted from space (IRS), one of the major hazards for astronauts. To this aim, a major task is to identify the specificities of the different sources of IRS that concern astronauts. By considering the probabilities of the impact of IRS against spacecraft shielding, three conclusions

We detect regular particle showers in several compact pixel detectors, distributed over the International Space Station. These showers are caused by high energy galactic cosmic rays, with energies often in the 10 s of TeV or higher. We survey the frequency of these events, their dependence on location on ISS, and their independence of the location of ISS, on its orbit. The Timepix detectors used allow individual particle tracks to be resolved, providing a possibility to perform physical analysis of shower events, which we demonstrate. In terms of radiation dosimetry, these showers indicate cer

Future lunar missions and beyond will require new and innovative approaches to radiation countermeasures. The Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) is focused on identifying and supporting unique approaches to reduce risks to human health and performance on future missions beyond low Earth orbit. This paper will describe three funded and complementary avenues for reducing the risk to humans from radiation exposure experienced in deep space. The first focus is on identifying new therapeutic targets to reduce the damaging effects of radiation by focusing on high throughput ge

Chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei, and sister chromatid exchanges have been analysed in human peripheral lymphocytes of 18 Concorde pilots and 10 controls. There was an eightfold significant increase of dicentric chromosomes in the Concorde group. The yield of micronuclei was also significantly elevated. Sister chromatid exchanges in the Concorde group did not differ from the control. Comparing the results to flight personnel from subsonic routes, the dicentric yield was higher in personnel from supersonic crews but the difference was not statistically significant. The overdispersion of dic

The future of space exploration will include a prolonged presence on the Moon, commercial low-orbit spaceflight, and long-range missions to Deep Space, including a prolonged Martian presence. Understanding the effects the space environment will have on astronauts' musculoskeletal system is mission critical and include both microgravity and space radiation. In spaceflight, crewmembers are exposed to a vast mixture of radiation species and energies including cosmic rays (CR) from galactic cosmic radiation (GCR), solar ejections, and neutrons. Any trip beyond the protection of the Earth's electro

Monitoring space radiation is of vital importance for risk reduction strategies in human space exploration. Radiation protection programs on Earth and in space rely on personal and area radiation monitoring instruments. Crew worn radiation detectors are crucial for successful crew radiation protection programs since they measure what each crewmember experiences in different shielding configurations within the space habitable volume. The Space Radiation Analysis Group at NASA Johnson Space Center investigated several compact, low power, real-time instruments for personal dosimetry. Following th
