From cantaloupe to cattle: Pseudomonas alabamensis sp. nov. described from diseased cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) foliage and a bovine (Bos taurus) nasopharynx.

In 2022, a fluorescent bacterial isolate, designated 22-AL-CL-001, was isolated from diseased cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) foliage collected in Alabama, USA, displaying marginal necrosis and general blighting. Whole-genome sequencing and subsequent comparisons to publicly available bacterial genomes identified Pseudomonas isolate USDA-ARS-USMARC-56711, isolated from a clinically healthy calf (Bos taurus) in Kansas, USA, as genetically similar to isolate 22-AL-CL-001. The two isolates were then characterized using phenotypic and genetic analyses, including fluorescence on King's medium B; LOPAT re

The MADS-box transcription factor CmFYF promotes the production of male flowers and inhibits the fruit development in melon (Cucumis melo L.).

The FOREVER YOUNG FLOWER (FYF/AGL42) gene plays an important role in regulating the flower development especially the flowering time, and senescence and abscission of floral organs. Melon is an important horticultural crop, and the flower development has an important influence on pollination, fertilization and final fruit yield. However, the function of FYF homolog is still unknown in melon. In this study, the characteristic of melon CmFYF was analyzed combining with molecular biology, developmental biology and biochemical tools. CmFYF was present in all detected tissues of melon, but its expr

Evaluation and selection of superior snap melon (Cucumis melo var. momordica Duth. & Full.) genotypes using morphological, yield, and selected fruit quality traits.

The snap melon (Cucumis melo var. momordica Duth. & Full.), recognized for its characteristic fruit splitting at maturity, is a nutritious and resilient cucurbit with considerable potential for crop improvement. However, systematic breeding efforts remain limited due to low genetic variability present in available germplasm and the relationships among yield and selected fruit quality traits. This study evaluated 30 snap melon genotypes to quantify genetic variability, heritability, trait correlations, and genetic divergence for the identification of superior breeding materials. Substantial phe

Salicylic acid alleviates cadmium-induced inhibition of growth and photosynthesis through upregulating antioxidant defense system in two melon cultivars (Cucumis melo L.).

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread toxic heavy metal that usually causes deleterious effects on plant growth and development. Salicylic acid (SA), a naturally existing phenolic compound, is involved in specific responses to various environmental stresses. To explore the role of SA in the tolerance of melon (Cucumis melo L.) to Cd stress, the influence of SA application on the growth and physiological processes was compared in the two melon cultivars Hamilv (Cd-tolerant) and Xiulv (Cd-sensitive) under Cd stress. Under 400-μM Cd treatment, Hamilv showed a higher biomass accumulation, more chlorophyll

Mutation of Mg-chelatase subunit I causes distinct phenotypes of chlorophyll accumulation and seedling etiolation in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and melon (Cucumis melo).

Chlorophyll biosynthesis is essential for plant growth and development, as it directly modulates photosynthetic capacity. Here, we identified yellow mutants with chlorophyll deficiency and abnormal thylakoid stacking-disturbed in watermelon (lethal) and melon (non-lethal), and mapped the traits to SNPs (H359R in watermelon, T193A in melon) in ChlI, which encodes Mg-chelatase subunit I. Suppression of ClChlI in watermelon and CmChlI in melon caused reduced chlorophyll accumulation and leaf yellowing. Moreover, the mutated ChlI exhibited altered autologous protein structures, and weakened intera

Phenolic profile and antioxidant activity from peels and seeds of melon (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus) and their antiproliferative effect in cancer cells.

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) has high economic value and in recent years, its production has increased; however, part of the fruit is wasted. Usually, inedible parts such as peel and seeds are discarded during processing and consumption. Extracts of melon residues were prepared and their phenolic compounds, antioxidants and antiproliferative activities were evaluated. Total phenolic compounds were found in hydroethanolic, hydromethanolic, and aqueous extracts, especially for melon peel (1.016 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g). Flavonoids total content found for melon peel aqueous extract was 262 µg

Ancient DNA reveals early use of melons in China's Song dynasty.

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) domestication is thought to have occurred independently once in Northeast Africa and twice in India, but archaeobotanical seed remains point to a possible additional domestication event in China. Because Cucumis seeds are difficult to diagnose morphologically, genomic data from archaeological material are needed to evaluate these scenarios and reconstruct ancient melon traits. We sequenced two Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) melon seeds from Shuomen Gugang (China), recovering 5.5× and 2.1× nuclear genome coverage. Nuclear and chloroplast analyses place both seeds within cult

Effects of Genotype and Modified Atmosphere Packaging on the Quality of Fresh-Cut Melons.

Marketing melons (Cucumis melo) as convenient fresh-cut products is popular nowadays. However, damage inflicted by fresh-cut processing results in fast quality degradation and food safety risks. The life of fresh-cut produce can be extended by a modified atmosphere (MA), either generated in a package by tissue respiration (a passive MA) or injected by gas flushing (an active MA). This work investigated the effect of passive and active MA formed in packages of different perforation levels on the quality of fresh-cut melons of two genetic groups: C. melo var. cantalupensis, characterized by clim
