Study on the Desulfurization and Regeneration Performance of Functional Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Four deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized, and 5-30% polyethylenimine (PEI) was added to make functional DESs (FDESs) for dynamic absorption experiments of hydrogen sulfide. The synthesized FDESs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance. The results demonstrated the successful synthesis of FDESs. The interaction between H2S and the FDESs was discussed at a molecular level via the quantum chemical calculations. It was noticed that FDESs prefer chemisorption on H2S. In this work, the 25% PEI/FDES@EG showed

Deep Eutectic Solvent Eutectogels for Delivery of Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobials.

Gel-based wound dressings have gained popularity within the healthcare industry for the prevention and treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. Gels based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs), known as eutectogels, provide a promising alternative to hydrogels as they are non-volatile and highly tunable and can solubilize therapeutic agents, including those insoluble in hydrogels. A choline chloride:glycerol-cellulose eutectogel was loaded with numerous antimicrobial agents including silver nanoparticles, black phosphorus nanoflakes, and commercially available pharmaceuticals (octenidine dihyd

Multicomponent Approach to Hydantoins and Thiohydantoins Involving a Deep Eutectic Solvent.

We report an efficient synthetic strategy to diverse hydantoins and thiohydantoins involving a three-component reaction with the aid of deep eutectic solvent. Here, N,N'-dimethyl urea and N,N'-dimethyl thiourea play a dual role as reactant and reaction medium along with l-(+)-tartaric acid. The three-component reaction provides an easy access to 5-amino-1,3-dialkyl-substituted hydantoins and thiohydantoins in good yields.

A Deep Eutectic Solvent Thermomorphic Multiphasic System for Biocatalytic Applications.

The applicability of a thermomorphic multiphasic system (TMS) composed of a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) and an aqueous potassium phosphate buffer with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase change for homogeneous biocatalysis was investigated. A lidocaine-based DES with the fatty acid oleic acid as a hydrogen-bond donor was studied. Phase diagrams were determined and presented within this study. We tested different additional components to the solvent system and observed a decrease in the cloud point of approximately 0.026 °C per concentration unit. Distribution studies

Metal extraction from a deep eutectic solvent, an insight into activities.

The solvent extraction of gold, palladium, technetium, indium and rhenium from both mixtures of a deep eutectic solvent with aqueous salt solutions and of two different aqueous salt solutions has been performed. Initially using gold and then the other metals the solvent extraction results were interpreted using an activity coefficient/function equation (specific ion interaction theory). The most important presented result is the addition of a new term to the specific ion interaction theory equation. Using the new model it will be possible to make predictions of the behaviour of a solvent extra

Supramolecular solvents based on deep eutectic solvents and hexafluorobutanol for the extraction of aristolochic acids from natural plants.

In this study, a new liquid phase microextraction method was developed by combining micelle-mediated extraction of aristolochic acids (AAs) in traditional Chinese medicines with polyfluorinated alcohol solutions, and subsequent preconcentration via deep eutectic solvent (DES)-induced supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) formation. The preparation of SUPRASs with polyfluorinated alcohols functioning as amphiphiles and the DESs acting as coacervation agents is demonstrated for the first time. Different polyfluorinated alcohols and DESs were examined for the extraction and preconcentration of AAs. The

Conformational stability of lysozyme in choline chloride-polyol aqueous deep eutectic solvents (ADES).

Naturally occurring deep eutectic solvents (NADES) offer a tunable microenvironment for biomolecular stabilization. Yet, the atomistic mechanisms governing the protein-solvent interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we present microsecond-long atomistic molecular dynamics simulations investigating lysozyme (Lys) stability in Choline Chloride (ChCl)-polyol (erythritol, xylitol, and sorbitol) aqueous deep eutectic solvents as a function of water wt. % (fw=0,25,50,75). Lys maintains its native structure across all conditions, with stable Rg, RMSD, RMSF, and secondary structure populations. T

Natural deep eutectic solvents assisted the encapsulation of curcumin in gellan gum hydrogels.

In this study, curcumin (Cur) was encapsulated within a gellan gum (GG) gel using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) to enhance its gastrointestinal retention. Three NADES-composed of malic acid-glucose (MA-Glu), malic acid-xylitol (MA-Xyl), and betaine-malic acid (Bet-MA)-were introduced to combine with GG to form hydrogels. The initial elastic moduli of GG hydrogels increased approximately 5-, 7-, and 20-fold with the incorporation of NADES(MA-Glu), NADES(MA-Xyl), and NADES(Bet-MA), respectively. The microstructure of the corresponding systems transformed from large pores to dense mesh n

Choline Chloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents as Green Effective Medium for Quaternization Reactions.

The Menshutkin reaction represents the alkylation of tertiary amines by alkyl halide where the reactants are neutral and the products, quaternary ammonium salts, are two ions with opposite signs. The most commonly used organic solvents in quaternization reactions are volatile organic solvents (VOSs), namely acetone, anhydrous benzene, dry dichloromethane (DCM), dimethylformamide (DMF) and acetonitrile (ACN). The purpose of this work was to examine eutectic solvents as a "greener" alternative to conventional solvents so that quaternization reactions take place in accordance with the principles

Effect of deep eutectic solvents-regulated lignin structure on subsequent pyrolysis products selectivity.

The chemical structure of lignin has an important effect on the lignin pyrolysis product distributions. Therefore, it is of great significance to regulate the selectivity of pyrolysis products by modifying the lignin structure. Herein, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) including choline chloride/ethylene glycol (CE), zinc chloride/ethylene glycol (ZE) and choline chloride/acetic acid, treatment of softwood kraft lignin (SKL) is demonstrated. Systematic characterization indicate that the DESs are not only highly conducive to increasing the hydrogen to carbon efficient ratio, reducing the molecular

Graph Theory of Deep Eutectic Solvents: From Typed Interaction Networks to Property Prediction.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) present a formidable challenge for property prediction due to the complex interplay of hydrogen bonding, Coulombic, dispersion, and coordination interactions that define their macroscopic behavior. Existing approaches─group contribution methods, COSMO-RS, and brute-force molecular dynamics─either lack transferability, require prohibitive computational cost, or obscure the physical origins of observed trends. Here we propose a graph-theoretic framework in which a DES mixture is represented as a directed, weighted, typed multigraph whose nodes are mixture components

Physicochemical and Biological Properties of Menthol and Thymol-Based Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Seven hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (hDESs) were characterised to evaluate their potential applicability in different industries and their environmental impact. Standard physicochemical properties were determined, yielding polarity and density values that were slightly higher for thymol-based hDESs than menthol-based ones, whereas for viscosity, the trend was opposite. Regarding biologically relevant activities, the antioxidative capacity and antimicrobial activity of hDESs were determined. Thymol-based hDESs are more potent as potential antioxidants, especially the one with coumarin as a

Assessing the Toxicity of Terpene- and Amino Acid-Based Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the discovery of greener solvents for industrial applications. In this context, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as promising candidates across various sectors, including biomass conversion, paper and pulp, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. A new class of DESs, known as natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), is derived from natural chemicals and is expected to be more environmentally friendly. However, research into the environmental impact and toxicity of NADESs is still limited. Given the broad applications of DESs and t

Iron-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents: Versatile and Powerful Tools in Sustainable Organic Synthesis.

Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) based on abundant and non-toxic first-row metals have emerged as versatile and sustainable alternatives to conventional solvents/promoters in a variety of synthetic organic protocols under greener and milder reaction conditions. In particular, Fe(III)-based Lewis Acidic DESs (LADESs) have recently shown great potential as dual solvent/promoter systems enabling efficient transformations under air and recyclable conditions without requiring toxic volatile organic compound (VOC) solvents at any stage in the protocol (synthesis, isolation or purification). Mechanism study of ternary deep eutectic solvents with protonic acid for lignin fractionation.

This paper investigated the fractionation of lignin by ternary DES of different polyols using simulation calculation. ChCl-EG-PTSA showed the highest degradability of lignin with the absolute value of total interaction energy of -8023.80 kJ/mol, and the total number of hydrogen bonds was 91.4. The highest degradability was observed for ChCl:EG: PTSA = 2:4:1. The results show that CL- plays a dominant role in lignin fractionation and readily forms hydrogen bonds with γ-OH. The difference is that the polyol preferred to form hydrogen bonds with α-OH in lignin. The addition of PTSA provided proto
