Exploring the Correlation between Salivary Spinnbarkeit and Caries Scores.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, the relationship between the spinnbarkeit, i.e., the stretchability of saliva, and dental caries was investigated. METHODS: Dentistry students were divided into a group with more than 2 decayed, missed, and filled teeth (DMFT ≥2, n = 30) and caries-free group (DMFT = 0, n = 36). RESULTS: Unstimulated saliva flow rate, pH, and spinnbarkeit were determined. Salivary spinnbarkeit was significantly lower in the caries-prone group compared to the caries-free group (5.4 ± 3.9 mm vs. 13.5 ± 7.6 mm, respectively, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This suggests that saliva with

Chapter 3: Pathological Features of Coronal Caries.

Pathology is the science of how a tissue changes during the process of the disease. The pathology is of important knowledge for understanding subsequent treatment concepts of a disease. In the cariology field, pathological features of caries are often presented using tooth sections, whereby the sequence and spread can be monitored. It is optimal to describe such changes using thin undecalcified tooth sections as an overview can be given of both enamel demineralization and pulp-dentine reactions. Also, an optimal understanding is achieved if the clinical status of carious lesion activity is kno

Chapter 4: Development Defects of Enamel and Dentine and Coronal Caries.

The development of the human dentition is prone to disruption due to its delicate and complex nature - including variations in tooth number and anatomical form and in the characteristics of enamel, dentine, and cementum. This chapter will focus on developmental defects of dental enamel (DDE) and dentine (DDD), which can be associated with considerable treatment burden on an individual, often related to the change in dental hard tissue characteristics in those at increased caries risk. DDE are prevalent and can be related to genetic conditions such as amelogenesis imperfecta and environmental c

Improved Surface Layer Erosion of Pit and Fissure Caries Lesions in Preparation for Resin Infiltration.

The penetration of a low-viscosity resin (infiltrant) into caries lesions depends on the erosion of the relatively impermeable surface layer (SL) that covers the lesion body. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different abrasive pretreatments on erosion of the SL and on penetration of an infiltrant into occlusal caries lesions, simultaneously. Sixty extracted human molars showing International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-2) lesions were randomly allocated to 5 groups. A small area of each lesion was covered with resin before etching. Twelve lesions each were et

Chapter 9.3: Current Concepts of Caries Removal in Daily Practice.

Although the discussion about the amount of carious dentin to be removed during cavity preparation is quite old, concepts for caries removal have evolved and changed considerably over the last decades. The antiquate understanding that it was necessary to eliminate the microbial contamination of a cavity before placing the restoration was replaced by the current knowledge that maintaining contaminated dentin beneath restorations is inevitable and is not associated with treatment failure. This chapter brings together the body of evidence behind carious dentin removal to indicate a conservative t

Minimum intervention oral care: defining the future of caries management.

It is not uncommon that oral healthcare professionals and researchers interchange the use of the terms minimum/minimal intervention and minimally invasive dentistry. However, these terms apply to two different, but related, concepts. Minimum intervention dentistry, to be more appropriately addressed in this paper as minimum intervention oral care (MIOC), is an oral healthcare delivery framework that encompasses four interlinked clinical domains. These domains are: identifying disease - detection, longitudinal risk/susceptibility assessment, investigation, diagnosis and the development of a per

Visualization of etching cycles efficacy at the resin infiltration into artificial enamel caries: in-vitro study on bovine teeth.

This study evaluated the effect of repeated etching cycles on resin infiltrant penetration. Enamel samples measuring 4 × 4 × 3 mm3 were obtained from the facial aspect of 50 extracted bovine teeth. Samples were immersed in a demineralization solution for 21 days to create artificial lesions and divided into five equal groups (n = 10). A 15% hydrochloric acid gel was administered to each group. The acid etching application time differed between groups: Group 1; 2 min, Group 2; 2 × 2 min, Group 3; 3 × 2 min, Group 4; 4 × 2 min, and Group 5; 5 × 2 min. Resin infiltration was visualized using a co

Integration of an evidence-based caries management approach in dental education: The perspectives of dental instructors.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Evidence-based caries management (EBCM) has developed into an internationally recognized tool for integration of comprehensive non-surgical caries treatment in dental education. However, uptake of the EBCM approach remains uneven across Canadian dental schools. Our project sought to understand how dental instructors perceive the challenges and solutions to the integration of the EBCM approach in undergraduate clinical education. METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive design, we recruited a purposeful sample of clinical instructors supervising undergraduate dental student

Prediction and validation of microbial community function from normal pulp to pulpitis caused by deep dentinal caries.

INTRODUCTION: Microbial function changes may be responsible for dental pulp transformation from normal to diseased. However, studies on the prediction and verification of the function of the microbial community in the deep dentine and pulp of caries-induced pulpitis are lacking. METHODS: This study included 171 cases of deep dentinal caries divided into normal pulp (NP), reversible pulpitis (RP), and irreversible pulpitis (IRP). In Experiment I, the microbial community composition was identified in 111 samples using 16S ribosomal DNA. Function prediction was performed through phylogenetic inv

A multifunctional polymeric coating with self-adsorbed, antifouling and in situ remineralization properties for caries management.

Dental caries is a biofilm-induced bacterial infectious oral disease, where the early attachment of proteins and pathogenic bacteria to tooth surfaces has been known as the main cause of biofilm formation. Typically, dental caries is commonly accompanied by mineral depletion of enamels, thus causing dental demineralization. Multifunctional materials are highly attractive candidates for treating dental caries. Herein, we successfully synthesized diblock copolymers poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(aspartic acid) (PEG-PAsp) and modified them with alendronate sodium (ALN) to serve as bioactive bifunct

Analysis of microbiota in black stain of children and its impact on caries risk. A systematic review.

Black stain (BS) is a peculiar discoloration often observed on the teeth of paediatric patients, particularly prevalent in certain populations. This systematic review aims to analyze the composition of the microbiota associated with BS and its potential implications for caries risk. A acomprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) to identify relevant studies published up to January 2024. Eligible studies were those investigating the microbiological profile of BS patients compared to non-black stain individuals, with a focus on cariogenic species
