Degraded mapping of disparity tuning in visual cortex explains deficits in binocular depth perception.

Sensory cortex is highly organized, but the function of this organization is contentious. We show that closing one eye during the developmental critical period in juvenile mice (monocular deprivation) caused lasting impairments in binocular depth perception and disrupted cortical maps of binocular disparity tuning. In normal mice, disparity tuning was concentrated in the central visual field, particularly with respect to azimuth and in higher visual areas (HVAs). Additionally, neurons transitioned from encoding nearer to farther stereoscopic depths from the center toward the peripheral visual

Perception of apparent motion in depth: a high-density electrical mapping study in humans.

We evaluated brain activity using 64-channel visual evoked potentials (VEPs) while subjects perceived apparent motion in depth. Checkerboard patterns (CBPs) within small and large circles were presented in turn as experimental conditions. Motion in depth was perceived when the CBP in the large circle was coarser than in the small circle; when coarseness did not change, no motion in depth was perceived. As control conditions only fine or coarse CBPs were presented. We used ANOVA to compare VEPs associated with experimental vs. control conditions and with coarse vs. fine CBPs. Negative potential

Assessment of depth perception with a comprehensive disparity defined letter test: A pilot study.

Current clinical tests mostly assess stereopsis with crossed disparity at near. These tests are designed with fine targets (high spatial frequency) and may fail to capture the "functional stereopsis" in real-world scenes, which consist of a range of spatial frequencies (SFs). We developed a stereo letter test that can assess crossed and uncrossed stereoacuity at near and far, at different SFs defined by the letter size. The test consists of disparity-defined letters embedded in random-dot stereograms. At each letter size, the letters are arranged in sets of trigrams like in the Pelli-Robson ch

3D endoscopy shows enhanced anatomical details and depth perception vs 2D: a multicentre study.

PURPOSE: The current standard endoscopic technique is a high resolution visualisation up to Full HD and even 4 K. A recent development are 3D endoscopes providing a 3-dimensional picture, which supposedly gives additional information of depth, anatomical details and orientation in the surgical field. Since the 3D-endoscopic technique is new, little scientific evidence is known whether the new technique provides advantages for the surgeon compared to the 2D-endoscopic standard technique in FESS. This study compares the standard 2D-endoscopic surgical technique with the new commercially availabl

Correlation between depth perception by three-rods test and stereoacuity by distance Randot Stereotest.

BACKGROUND: The examination of depth perception with three-rods test, in addition to visual acuity testing, is required to obtain motor vehicle license to drive taxies and trucks, according to the Road Traffic Act in Japan. The aim of this study was to examine whether the results of the three-rods test would correlate with the results of static stereopsis tests, used in ophthalmic practice. METHODS: This study involved 54 normal subjects, 9 women and 45 men, with ages ranging from 18 to 25 (mean, 20.8) years. All had visual acuity of 0.8 or better with or without glasses or contact lenses cor

Audio-visual interactions for motion perception in depth modulate activity in visual area V3A.

Multisensory signals can enhance the spatial perception of objects and events in the environment. Changes of visual size and auditory intensity provide us with the main cues about motion direction in depth. However, frequency changes in audition and binocular disparity in vision also contribute to the perception of motion in depth. Here, we presented subjects with several combinations of auditory and visual depth-cues to investigate multisensory interactions during processing of motion in depth. The task was to discriminate the direction of auditory motion in depth according to increasing or d

Acceptable or Not: An In-depth Analysis of Adolescent Competitive Athletes' Perceptions on Abusive Coaching Behaviors.

The present study aimed to conduct an in-depth analysis of adolescent competitive athletes' perceptions on abusive coaching behaviors. Our aims were thus to (a) identify the acceptable abusive coaching behaviors and (b) characterize qualitatively the criteria for the acceptance of abusive coaching behaviors. Based on the study goal, an Abusive Coaching Behavior Grid was developed and completed by 356 French-speaking athletes, among which 10 were interviewed to justify where they draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable coaching behaviors. Quantitative analysis showed that shaking, sho

Visual Deficits in Contrast and Depth Perception in Psychotic Disorders: Implications for a Neural Hierarchy.

BACKGROUND: A key challenge in understanding the neurobehavioral mechanisms of psychotic disorders (PDs) is identifying the level and interactions of the affected brain regions. The early visual system, with its hierarchical structure, offers a model for studying such mechanisms. Specifically, variations in visual contrast are detected as early as in the retina, whereas binocular depth perception emerges at a higher level, in the visual cortex. Comparing these processes within individuals can provide insights into the mechanisms and progression of perceptual deficits in PDs. METHODS: Psychoph

Patient Perceptions of CAR-T Therapy in the USA: Findings from In-Depth Interviews.

INTRODUCTION: Chimeric antigen receptor-T cell (CAR-T) therapy has revolutionized advanced blood cancer treatment. However, preparation, administration, and recovery from these therapies can be complex and burdensome to patients and their care partners. Utilization of an outpatient setting for CAR-T therapy administration could help improve convenience and quality of life. METHODS: In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 18 patients in the USA with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma or relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 10 of whom had completed investigational or

Ambiguous pictorial depth cues and perceptions of nonrigid motion in the three-loop figure.

The three-loop figure is a two-dimensional (2-D) pattern that generates (mis)perceptions of nonrigid three-dimensional (3-D) structure when rotated about its centre. Such observations have been described as counterexamples to the principle whereby a moving object is presumed to be rigid, provided that a rigid interpretation is possible (ie the 'rigidity constraint'). In the present investigation we demonstrated that stationary three-loop figures exhibit many of the classic properties of multistable/ambiguous figures, with any one of several possible 3-D configurations being reported at any one

(Mis)perception of bias in print media: How depth of content evaluation affects the perception of hostile bias in an objective news report.

The hostile media effect describes the tendency for partisans to evaluate media content as relatively biased against their positions. The present study investigates what specific contextual elements of a news report contribute to this effect and how it may be mitigated by the depth of content evaluation. A online study of 102 participants revealed that less bias is perceived in a newspaper article when evaluating specific aspects of the article with the text available for reference than when evaluating the overall bias without referring to the text. Moreover, being asked to consider overall ar

The role of low-frequency oscillations in three-dimensional perception with depth cues in virtual reality.

Currently, vision-related neuroscience studies are undergoing a trend from simplified image stimuli toward more naturalistic stimuli. Virtual reality (VR), as an emerging technology for visual immersion, provides more depth cues for three-dimensional (3D) presentation than two-dimensional (2D) image. It is still unclear whether the depth cues used to create 3D visual perception modulate specific cortical activation. Here, we constructed two visual stimuli presented by stereoscopic vision in VR and graphical projection with 2D image, respectively, and used electroencephalography to examine neur

Lesions to right posterior parietal cortex impair visual depth perception from disparity but not motion cues.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is understood to be active when observers perceive three-dimensional (3D) structure. However, it is not clear how central this activity is in the construction of 3D spatial representations. Here, we examine whether PPC is essential for two aspects of visual depth perception by testing patients with lesions affecting this region. First, we measured subjects' ability to discriminate depth structure in various 3D surfaces and objects using binocular disparity. Patients with lesions to right PPC (N = 3) exhibited marked perceptual deficits on these tasks, wherea

Impairment of depth perception in multiple sclerosis is improved by treatment with AC pulsed electromagnetic fields.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with postural instability and an increased risk of falling which is facilitated by a variety of factors including diminished visual acuity, diplopia, ataxia, apraxia of gait, and peripheral neuropathy. Deficient binocular depth perception may also contribute to a higher incidence of postural instability and falling in these patients who, for example, find it an extremely difficult task to walk on uneven ground, over curbs, or up and down steps. I report a 51 year old woman with secondary progressive MS who experienced difficulties with binocular depth perc

Perception of scene-relative object movement: Optic flow parsing and the contribution of monocular depth cues.

We have recently suggested that the brain uses its sensitivity to optic flow in order to parse retinal motion into components arising due to self and object movement (e.g. Rushton, S. K., & Warren, P. A. (2005). Moving observers, 3D relative motion and the detection of object movement. Current Biology, 15, R542-R543). Here, we explore whether stereo disparity is necessary for flow parsing or whether other sources of depth information, which could theoretically constrain flow-field interpretation, are sufficient. Stationary observers viewed large field of view stimuli containing textured cubes,

Long range interactions between object-motion and self-motion in the perception of movement in depth.

Self-motion through a three-dimensional array of objects creates a radial flow pattern on the retina. We superimposed a simulated object moving in depth on such a flow pattern to investigate the effect of the flow pattern on judgments of both the time to collision (TTC) with an approaching object and the trajectory of that object. Our procedure allowed us to decouple the direction and speed of simulated self motion-in-depth (MID) from the direction and speed of simulated object MID. In Experiment 1 we found that objects with the same closing speed were perceived to have a higher closing speed

The perception and prehension of objects oriented in the depth plane. I. Effects of visual form agnosia.

Previous studies have reported that the visual form agnosic D.F. is able to use information about visual targets for the control of motor acts, but has great difficulty in using the same visual information for perceptual report. This intact visuomotor performance may be mediated by relatively intact parieto-frontal cortical mechanisms. The present study investigated the ability of D.F. to use binocular and monocular information about the orientation of an object in the depth plane for perceptual and visuomotor purposes. A square plaque was presented at seven different orientations in depth to

Perceptions of Pregnancy and Contraceptive Use: An In-Depth Study of Women in Los Angeles Methadone Clinics.

INTRODUCTION: In 2016, 2.1 million people in the United States were estimated to have an opioid use disorder. Although the disorder can be safely and effectively treated with prescription methadone, treatment is potentially long term and may span women's peak childbearing ages. Little is known about women's reproductive health needs while on methadone. METHODS: We interviewed 22 sexually active, nonpregnant women ages 21-39 years at two Los Angeles methadone clinics in 2016. The interviews were transcribed and coded by four researchers using thematic and open coding techniques. RESULTS: One-

Clinical Application to Improve the "Depth Perception Problem" by Combining Augmented Reality and a 3D Printing Model.

UNLABELLED: In our experience with intraoperative evaluation and educational application of augmented reality technology, an illusion of depth has been a major problem. To improve this depth perception problem, we conducted two experiments combining various three-dimensional models and holograms and the observation angles using an augmented reality device. METHODS: In experiment 1, when observing holograms projected on the surface layer of the model (bone model) or holograms projected on a layer deeper than the model (body surface model), the observer's first impression regarding which model
