Construct validity of the In-Hand Manipulation Test: a discriminant analysis with children without disability and children with spastic diplegia.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the construct validity of the In-Hand Manipulation Test (IMT) by assessing the test's ability to discriminate between samples of children with and without known fine motor problems. METHOD: The IMT was administered to 55 children without known fine motor problems and 24 children with spastic diplegia who had mild to moderate fine motor problems. Construct validity was estimated by evaluating how accurately the IMT classified the children as having or not having fine motor problems on the basis of total score. RESULTS: A discriminant analysis indicated that IMT

Visual discrimination of letter-like forms and its relationship to achievement over time in children with learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to better understand whether visual discrimination abilities are related to reading intelligence and other achievement areas in children with learning disabilities and normally achieving children. Children with visual discrimination problems were identified using the Gibson letter-like visual discrimination task. This task was given to a large sample of children with learning disabilities as well as a sample of normally achieving children. All children were followed throughout elementary school. Results indicated that children with learning disabilities who had vi

Disabled and Romani passengers face similar levels of discrimination but different levels of open hostility in the sharing economy.

This multimethod project investigates discrimination against members of two populous minority groups in the European Union: the Roma (numbering 6 million) and the disabled (numbering 100 million) on a leading Hungarian carpooling platform. In a field experiment, 1005 ride requests were sent to drivers, with passenger group membership (control, disabled, Roma) manipulated between participants. Widespread discrimination against both groups was apparent in significantly lower approval rates for disabled (56%) and Roma passengers (52%) relative to control (70%). Mechanisms driving anti-disabled an

Public stigmatisation of people with intellectual disabilities: a mixed-method population survey into stereotypes and their relationship with familiarity and discrimination.

PURPOSE: Stigmatisation can negatively affect opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to participate in society. Stereotyping, a first step in the process of stigmatisation, has been insufficiently explored for people with intellectual disabilities. This study examined the general public's set of stereotypes that is saliently attributed to people with intellectual disabilities as well as the relationship of these stereotypes with discriminatory intentions and familiarity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed-method cross-sectional survey within a representative sample of the Dutch p

Relationship between cholinergic dysfunction and discrimination learning disabilities in Wistar rats following chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

The effects of chronic hypoperfusion of cerebral blood flow (CBF) on central cholinergic indices and intellectual functions were investigated in rats. Male Wistar rats, aged 9 weeks, were anesthetized with pentobarbital, and the bilateral common carotid arteries were permanently ligated. Cortical CBF in the hypoperfused rats was markedly decreased at 6 weeks after the operation. In the hypoperfused group, cholinergic indices were changed to consist two phases after the operation, before (acute) and after (chronic) 6 weeks after the operation. At 6 weeks, choline acetyltransferase activity was

Training phonemic segmentation ability with a phonemic discrimination intervention in second- and third-grade children with reading disabilities.

The present study examined the possibility that phonemic discrimination training could improve the phonemic segmentation ability of children with reading disabilities. Half of the 32 children with reading disabilities (14 male and 4 female second graders and 10 male and 4 female third graders, with mean ages of 99.2 and 109.7 months, respectively) deficient in phonemic segmentation skills were assigned to the training group, while the other half acted as a nontrained control group. The trained children were successful at significantly improving their performance on the phonemic segmentation ta

The Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale fails to discriminate pain or anxiety in a chronic disabling occupational musculoskeletal disorder population.

BACKGROUND: The Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS) was developed to measure fear and anxiety responses to pain. Many studies have found associations between PASS scores and self-report measures of pain, anxiety, and disability as well as among inhibited movement patterns and activity avoidance behaviors (eg, kinesophobia). This study aimed to identify clinically meaningful cut-off points to identify high or low levels of pain anxiety and to determine if the PASS provides additional useful information in a functional restoration (FR) treatment program for chronic disabling occupational musculos

Has Muscle Power Better Discriminative Capacity Compared to Muscle Strength in Predicting Worsening Disability in Older Adults?

BACKGROUND: Poor muscle strength is a risk factor for disability; nonetheless, its discriminative capacity in identifying people who will become disabled is poor. We evaluated whether muscle power, which also is a risk factor for disability, has better discriminative capacity compared to muscle strength. METHODS: We used data from the population-based InCHIANTI study. Our outcome measure was the loss of at least 1 basic or instrumental activity of daily living between baseline and 3-year follow-up visit. Body weight standardized knee isometric strength and leg power (power rig) were used as e

Assessing the impact of disabilities on healthcare access among Sudanese refugees in Egypt during the 2023 crisis: a discriminant analysis approach.

INTRODUCTION: The longstanding presence of Sudanese refugees in Egypt-fueled by decades of political instability, conflict, and economic hardship in Sudan-has evolved with the recent 2023 crisis. This study investigates the living conditions, health status, and the impact of disabilities on healthcare access among newly displaced Sudanese in Egypt. METHODS: A phone-based survey was administered to 531 Sudanese refugees. Descriptive statistics were first used to summarize the key demographic and household characteristics of the sample. The data was then analyzed using discriminant analysis to

Applications of within-stimulus errorless learning methods for teaching discrimination skills to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A systematic review.

Errorless learning is an instructional strategy used widely with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The present systematic review aims to update the literature on the application of 'within-stimulus' errorless procedures. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42018118385). Twenty-eight articles including 283 participants met the operationally defined inclusion criteria. In the majority of cases, the errorless learning procedures evaluated led to improvements in acquiring discrimination skills. Most of the reviewed studies evaluated stimulus fading. Results ar

Perceived discrimination and academic procrastination among college students with physical disabilities: the mediating role of feelings of shame and self-handicapping.

BACKGROUND: Students with physical disabilities frequently experience perceived discrimination and often face psychological challenges. However, research on perceived discrimination among students with physical disabilities rarely extends to unfavorable educational outcomes. AIMS: This study aims to explore the association between perceived discrimination and academic procrastination among college students with physical disabilities, with self-handicapping and feelings of shame acting as serial mediators in this association. SAMPLE: 1142 Chinese college students with physical disabilities part

Do Quality-Adjusted-Life-Year-Based Cost-Effectiveness Analyses Discriminate Against Disabled Patients? A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) have been widely used in cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs). Nonetheless, critics argue that this measure may inherently discriminate against people with disabilities. This study aims to investigate whether the use of QALYs disadvantages disabled populations through combining theoretical analysis with examination of empirical evidence. METHODS: For the theoretical analysis, we constructed 5 scenarios to compare incremental QALYs between disabled and nondisabled patients reflecting different treatment effects on health-related quality of life or

Comparison of a combination of upper extremity performance measures and usual gait speed alone for discriminating upper extremity functional limitation and disability in older women.

Although usual gait speed (UGS) is considered an indicator of overall well-being, it is unclear whether upper extremity performance (UEP) measures provide a similar, additive contribution to functional status. We aimed to identify whether combining UEP measures can more accurately discriminate upper extremity functional limitation (UE limitation) and disability compared to UGS. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis on data from 322 community-dwelling older women, aged 65-96 years. Trained testers assessed UGS, and hand-grip strength (GRIP), functional reach (FR), back scratch, manipulating p
