BACKGROUND: The undergraduate stage is critical for developing nursing students' disaster nursing competencies; however, traditional lecture-based teaching often fails to promote active learning, and innovative instructional models remain underused in this field. The BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objective, Preassessment, Participatory Learning, Postassessment, and Summary) model is a student-centered, closed-loop instructional framework that emphasizes active participatory learning and real-time feedback.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a BOPPPS-based blended teaching model on di

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of a nurse-led, 360-degree video-based virtual reality disaster risk reduction program (VR-b-DRRP) on disaster literacy, preparedness, and individual resilience among rural adults, who are often underprepared for disasters because of limited fixed infrastructure, distance from health services, and low health literacy.
DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial with an intervention group and a control group (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT06565962).
METHODS: Sixty-four adults from a rural village were randomly allocated to either the intervention group (n = 32) or the contro

BACKGROUND: Hospices and specialized palliative home care services provide care for people with serious, life-threatening illnesses and those at the end of their lives. Disasters cause severe disruptions that exceed the capacity of structures and processes in a society. Given the increasing frequency and impact of disasters, it is crucial that these services maintain their functions for as long as possible, even under adverse conditions, to protect the people entrusted to their care. The aim of this research was therefore to examine whether and to what extent hospices and specialized palliativ

BACKGROUND: Climate-related disasters are increasingly associated with mass-casualty incidents, infectious surges and infrastructure disruption, creating rapid escalation to critical illness and sudden increases in demand for emergency and critical care nursing. Undergraduate nursing programmes often provide limited structured preparation for disaster triage, resuscitation, safe evacuation and team-based coordination under resource constraints.
AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a climate-resilient disaster preparedness education programme on undergraduate nursing students' knowl

INTRODUCTION: Japan is one of the countries most affected by both the global tobacco epidemic and disasters, which are often interrelated. This study aimed to analyze factors related to continuation of smoking or relapse after childbirth among women who smoked before pregnancy and inform approaches to help them continue smoking cessation in a post-disaster setting, such as that after the Fukushima nuclear accident.
METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of secondary data collection from Fukushima prefecture-wide cross-sectional self-administered questionnaire-based surveys. Participants were

Many natural and man-made disasters require the assistance from teams of health care professionals. Knowing that continuing education about disaster simulation training is essential to nursing students, nurses, and emergency first responders (e.g., emergency medical technicians, firefighters, police officers), a university in the northeastern United States planned and implemented an interprofessional mass casualty incident (MCI) disaster simulation using the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) management framework. The school of nursing and University Volunteer Ambulance Corps (UVAC)

This study elucidated mental health changes in 39 nurses in Fukushima Prefecture one to two years after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms improved, but posttraumatic negative cognitions worsened significantly. Factors including stress during the disaster, nursing-related stressors, and lack of disaster nursing experience contributed to negative cognitions. However, higher resilience and social support were associated with fewer negative cognitions. The complexity and uniqueness of radiation disasters may have influenced the nurses' negative thoughts. INTRODUCTION: The 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes were among the most catastrophic disasters in Türkiye’s history, affecting over 13 million people and causing massive casualties and infrastructure devastation. Nurses play a critical role in all phases of disaster management, yet no standardized, nurse-specific framework exists to guide their practice. This study aims to explore the challenges nurses encounter in earthquake management and to develop a comprehensive, nurse-specific earthquake management model based on their field experiences. METHODS: This qualitative study employed semi-structu

The community health faculty has developed a creative and comprehensive approach with community agencies to present bioterrorism content that could be useful to community health faculty in other schools of nursing. Since September 11, 2001, the United States has recognized that the threat of bioterrorism is real. Nurses are recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing as key players in disaster response efforts. However, bioterrorism knowledge among nurses and nursing students has been reported to be low, and textbooks do not include comprehensive information about bioterroris

Disaster mental health research has found that psychological casualties from a given disaster can be expected to far outnumber physical casualties. Amidst a shortage of mental health professionals and against the backdrop of natural disasters, continued terrorism, and pandemic influenza, there is a striking need to expand and operationalize available human resources to enhance the psychological resiliency of those affected. Through the utilization of psychological first aid (PFA) as an early crisis intervention tool, and by virtue of their occupation and experience, nurses are particularly wel

Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 storm, struck the U.S. Gulf states in late August, 2005, resulting in the most costly and second most deadly natural disaster in recent United States history. The storm and subsequent flooding due to levee failure necessitated the evacuation of 80% of the city of New Orleans' 484,674 residents. Most of the city's hospitals and other health care resources were destroyed or inoperable. The hurricane devastated many communities, stranding people in hospitals, shelters, homes, and nursing homes. Nurses and other health care providers deployed to New Orleans to provi

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, devastating the island for years to come. Puerto Rico has a rapidly aging population and does not have the long-term care (LTC) infrastructure of the United States mainland. This research describes experiences of individuals working in, residing in, and providing disaster response to LTC settings in Puerto Rico during and after Hurricane Maria. From January to March 2019, N = 20 in-person interviews were conducted with nursing home staff in three Puerto Rican nursing homes; in-home caregivers; and individuals providing disaster response. T
