Emergency treatment of petroleum distillate and turpentine ingestion.

A comparative study was made of pulmonary complications following the use of ipecac syrup and gastric lavage for hydrocarbon ingestion. The selected 255 patients had chest radiography when first seen and again two to five days later. Of these patients 74 or 29% had been treated with ipecac syrup, 41 or 16% by gastric lavage. On follow-up radiographs 19% of the ipecac-treated group were unchanged or worsened, compared with 39% of the lavage group, suggesting that pneumonitis was significantly less severe in the ipecac-treated patients. Use of ipecac is preferred over gastric lavage for alert pa

LadderMIL: Multiple-instance Learning with Coarse-to-Fine Self-Distillation.

Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) for whole slide image (WSI) analysis in computational pathology often neglects instance-level learning as supervision is typically provided only at the bag level, hindering the integrated consideration of instance and bag-level information during the analysis. In this work, we present LadderMIL, a framework designed to improve MIL through two perspectives: (1) employing instance-level supervision and (2) learning inter-instance contextual information at bag level. Firstly, we propose a novel Coarse-to-Fine Self-Distillation (CFSD) paradigm that probes and disti

Progressive Distillation for Incremental Learning in Corneal Confocal Microscopy Segmentation.

The morphological changes of corneal structures captured by corneal confocal microscopy (CCM), such as corneal nerves, Langerhans cells, stromal cells, etc., are closely related to various ocular and systemic diseases. Current CCM segmentation methods primarily focus on single-task, which limits their broad applicability in clinical practice. The absence of a standardized benchmark further presents a significant challenge in evaluating new methods. To this end, this paper presents a novel incremental learning-based approach for multi-structure segmentation in CCM images and a new benchmark. Sp

Decoupling forgetting and preservation in federated unlearning via knowledge distillation.

Federated Learning (FL) enables collaborative model training without sharing raw data, but compliance with data privacy regulations such as the "Right to be Forgotten" requires mechanisms to remove specific clients' contributions from trained models. A key challenge in federated unlearning is selectivity: removing a target client's influence while preserving performance for other designated clients. This is inherently difficult because deep neural networks learn shared feature representations, and aggressive forgetting operations degrade overall model utility. We propose a Three-Phase Selectiv

Gait-Semantic Relational Knowledge Distillation for Ground Reaction Force Estimation.

Wearable sensor-based gait analysis has attracted increasing attention for diverse applications in industrial fields, such as healthcare, rehabilitation, sports science, and continuous monitoring for worker injury prevention. Among gait-related signals, ground reaction force (GRF) is a key indicator for understanding human locomotion and is conventionally measured using force plates or instrumented treadmills. However, such systems are costly and limited to controlled laboratory environments, which restrict their use in daily-life settings. Wearable insole sensors provide a more portable alter

Knowledge distillation-based lightweight MobileNet model for diabetic retinopathy classification.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) stands as a leading cause of global blindness. Early identification and prompt treatment are essential to prevent vision impairment caused by DR. Manual screening of retinal fundus images is challenging and time-consuming. Additionally, in low-income countries, there is a significant gap between the number of DR patients and ophthalmologists. Currently, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are becoming a viable alternative to traditional DR screening techniques. However, DL suffers a major limitation in resource-constrained devices because of its large model s

Unpaired Cross-Modality Educed Distillation (CMEDL) for Medical Image Segmentation.

Accurate and robust segmentation of lung cancers from CT, even those located close to mediastinum, is needed to more accurately plan and deliver radiotherapy and to measure treatment response. Therefore, we developed a new cross-modality educed distillation (CMEDL) approach, using unpaired CT and MRI scans, whereby an informative teacher MRI network guides a student CT network to extract features that signal the difference between foreground and background. Our contribution eliminates two requirements of distillation methods: (i) paired image sets by using an image to image (I2I) translation a

Production and composition of cider spirits distilled in "alquitara".

The capacity of alquitara (a traditional distillation system) to produce cider brandies is evaluated. To do so, the chemical composition of 12 fractions obtained during the distillation process and the cider brandies obtained from five ciders were analyzed (alcohol strength, methanol, volatile substances, furfural, and metals), taking into account European and Spanish legislation. During the course of distillation, an important increase in methanol, furfural, 2-phenylethanol, and metals in the last fractions was observed, while fusel oils were more abundant in the first fractions collected. Toxicity of middle distillates from dermal exposure.

This report focuses on recent studies that investigated the effects of kerosine dermal exposure on neurotoxicity and reproductive/developmental toxicity. Background toxicity information will also be reviewed for kerosine range mid distillates. The kerosine range mid distillates have a carbon range of C9-C16 and have a boiling range of 302-554 degrees F (150-290 degrees C). This category includes kerosine, aviation fuels (e.g., Jet A, JP-5 and JP-8), no. 1 fuel oil and diesel fuel oil. In general, the kerosine range mid distillates demonstrate relatively low acute toxicity by any route of expos

The dangers of distilled water in contact lens maintenance.

The reports of serious corneal infection associated with hydrogel lens wear prompted us to explore the level of sterility of the distilled water used by lens wearers in our practice. Fifty patients supplied samples of their partially-used distilled water for testing. Of the samples, 12% were found to be contaminated. Five samples of previously unopened distilled water were tested and no growth was found. We recommend that patients do not use distilled water for the care of hydrogel contact lenses. Rather, sterile unit dose or multi-dose (aerosol) nonpreserved, or preserved salines can be used.

Edge seismic phase picking: Model distillation for multimodal early-warning systems.

Seismic monitoring is entering a high data volume, multimodal sensing regime driven by dense sensor deployments, including micro-electro-mechanical systems arrays, large-N (100s-1000s) Nodal arrays, distributed acoustic sensing, and other geophysical instruments. Machine learning models, with appropriate tuning and calibration, are capable of achieving close to expert-level performance in seismic detection and phase picking. The emerging operational challenge is how to scale that machine intelligence across future multimodal sensing networks. Effective incorporation of these capabilities remai

SSA-KD: Self-structure-aware knowledge distillation for convolutional neural networks.

Knowledge Distillation has achieved great success in model compression for convolutional neural networks. However, the selection of the student model usually relies on universal small structures, which leads to plentiful incompatibility and inefficiency, i.e., the student model cannot be customized adaptively in terms of specified datasets and tasks. In this paper, we propose a self-structure-aware knowledge distillation to obtain the student model by personalizing the teacher model, namely, we first formulate a sub-network from the original teacher model, and then conduct the knowledge distil

Knowledge Distillation in Object Detection: A Survey from CNN to Transformer.

Deep learning models, especially for object detection have gained immense popularity in computer vision. These models have demonstrated remarkable accuracy and performance, driving advancements across various applications. However, the high computational complexity and large storage requirements of state-of-the-art object detection models pose significant challenges for deployment on resource-constrained devices like mobile phones and embedded systems. Knowledge Distillation (KD) has emerged as a prominent solution to these challenges, effectively compressing large, complex teacher models into

Head-Decoupled Logit Distillation Framework for Boosting Logit Transfer Across Tasks.

The efficacy of logit transfer in knowledge distillation (KD) is often hampered by disparities in model architectures and imbalances in data distributions. Existing decoupled distillation methods predominantly rely on rigid category partitioning (e.g., target vs. non-target), failing to adapt to varying logit scales across different teacher models and showing instability in long-tailed learning scenarios. In this paper, we propose Head-Decoupled Logit Distillation (HDLD), a novel framework that redefines the distillation decoupling process from the perspective of instance-specific dynamic sema

Self-distillation double student network for semi-supervised medical image segmentation.

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has garnered considerable attention in medical image segmentation due to its ability to leverage abundant unlabeled data, thereby significantly alleviating the dependency on expensive pixel-wise annotations. However, existing Mean-Teacher-based frameworks typically guide the student network using a teacher model in a unidirectional or loosely interactive manner, which fails to fully exploit the complementary relationships between different networks and often struggles with low-confidence predictions that degrade boundary accuracy. To address these limitations, we

Advanced and interpretable corneal staining assessment through fine grained knowledge distillation.

The assessment of corneal fluorescein staining is essential, yet current AI models for Corneal Staining Score (CSS) assessments inadequately identify punctate lesions due to annotation challenges and noise, risk misrepresenting treatment responses through "plateau" effects, and highlight the necessity for real-world evaluations to enhance disease severity assessments. To address these limitations, we developed the Fine-grained Knowledge Distillation Corneal Staining Score (FKD-CSS) model. FKD-CSS integrates fine-grained features into CSS grading, providing continuous and nuanced scores with in

High Pressure Resistance in Omniphobic Distillation Membranes with Re-entrant Nanostructures.

We developed pressure-resistant omniphobic membranes that enable stable distillation of low-surface-tension liquids at applied pressures exceeding 15 bar. Membranes were synthesized by grafting re-entrant nanostructures onto porous alumina membranes, followed by hydrophobic modification. The membranes exhibited a high liquid entry pressure of 36.2 bar with water and withstood an applied pressure up to 15.5 bar with a low-surface-tension 15 wt % ethanol-water mixture. Simulations revealed that the enhanced wetting resistance is due to the presence of re-entrant structures, which facilitated a 2

[Feature distillation multiple instance learning method based on sequence reorganized Mamba].

Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies among men worldwide, and its diagnosis relies heavily on accurate analysis of whole slide imaging (WSI) in histopathology. However, manual interpretation is time-consuming and prone to inconsistent accuracy. Existing multiple instance learning (MIL)-based studies can assist diagnosis but still suffer from high computational cost, insufficient exploitation of inter-instance relationships, and neglect of tissue heterogeneity. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a feature distillation multiple instance learning method based on

A Distillation Approach to Phase Equilibrium Measurements of Multicomponent Fluid Mixtures.

By building on the Advanced Distillation Curve (ADC) approach to measuring the volatility of fuels and other fluid mixtures, the ADC with Reflux or ADCR technique was developed to address the difficulty of experimentally determining the vapor-liquid equilibrium of fluids containing many components. For fuels and other multicomponent mixtures, the ADCR collects data about the chemical compositions of both liquid and vapor phases across a range of temperatures, elucidating the two-phase region at constant pressure. Two simple mixtures were used to demonstrate the ADCR method: an n-decane/n-tetra

Gasification of the char derived from distillation of granulated scrap tyres.

This work reports the effect of pressure on the steam/oxygen gasification at 1000°C of the char derived from low temperature-pressure distillation of granulated scrap tyres (GST). The study was based on the analysis of gas production, carbon conversion, cold gas efficiency and the high heating value (HHV) of the product. For comparison, similar analyses were carried out for the gasification of coals with different rank. In spite of the relatively high ash (≈12 wt.%) and sulphur (≈3 wt.%) contents, the char produced in GST distillation can be regarded as a reasonable solid fuel with a calorific
