BACKGROUND: Preventing falls is a major issue for older people. Aging leads to a decline in executive functions and functional capacities, increasing the risk of falling. Most cognitive-motor assessments are additional Dual-Tasks (DTs), open to prioritization strategies, leading to heterogeneous results in the screening of the level of fall risk. The Walking Trail Making Test (W-TMT) is an incorporated cognitive-motor task sensitive to detecting cognitive impairments. A high level of fall risk is generally associated with higher cognitive impairments. The objective of this study is to evaluate

INTRODUCTION: Return-to-duty assessment for service members (SM) following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) combining motor and cognitive skills in dual task (DT) scenarios may better approximate the demands of active duty service. The Portable Warrior Test of Tactical Agility (POWAR-TOTAL) is a valid mTBI assessment tool which incorporates DT assessment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six SM diagnosed with mTBI and 59 healthy control (HC) SM performed the POWAR-TOTAL. Group differences in relative DT effect were categorized based on performance trade-offs and prioritizations. A paired-sample

BACKGROUND: Individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) are susceptible to balance, gait and cognitive impairments. Importantly, diabetes affects executive function, a set of cognitive processes critical to everyday cortical function and mobility. Reduced executive function is a risk factor for falls in people with DM. Dual-task testing, the completion of two tasks at once, enables the examination of the cognitive-mobility relationship. A synthesis of the literature on the effects of dual- task testing on the balance and gait of individuals with DM has not been performed.
OBJECTIVE: To systematic

OBJECTIVES: Patients suffering from vestibular disorders (VD) often present with impairments in cognitive domains such as visuospatial ability, memory, executive function, attention, and processing speed. These symptoms can be attributed to extensive vestibular projections throughout the cerebral cortex and subcortex on the one hand, and to increased cognitive-motor interference (CMI) on the other hand. CMI can be assessed by performing cognitive-motor dual-tasks (DTs). The existing literature on this topic is scarce and varies greatly when it comes to test protocol, type and degree of vestibu

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To examine whether older people with markedly dual task-related decreases in walking speed - a marker of disturbed higher-level gait control and falls - have a larger discrepancy between real and imagined Timed Up and Go (TUG) test times than those with less dual task-related decreases in walking speed.
METHODS: Based on a prospective cross-sectional study, 193 older adults (mean age 77.4 ± 5.9 years; 44.0 % women) referred to and consecutively assessed at a Swiss university clinic for a gait analysis to assess either gait disorders, fall risk or memory disorders were inc

Stroke can impair mobility, with deficits more pronounced while simultaneously performing multiple activities. In this study, common clinical tests were instrumented with wearable motion sensors to study motor-cognitive interference effects in stroke survivors (SS). A total of 21 SS and 20 healthy controls performed the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Sit-to-Stand (STS), balance, and 10-Meter Walk (10MWT) tests under single and dual-task (counting backward) conditions. Calculated measures included total time and gait measures for TUG, STS, and 10MWT. Balance tests for both open and closed eyes conditio

INTRODUCTION: Dual-task testing, which combines a motor task with a simultaneous memory task, is commonly used to detect early cognitive decline because it challenges attention and executive function. However, most dual-task assessments emphasize motor performance while overlooking speech during the memory component. Speech reflects the integrity of multiple cognitive systems and has emerged as a promising digital biomarker of brain health. Yet, existing speech-based protocols typically rely on single-task, clinic-based recordings, limiting scalability and real-world applicability. Integrating

BACKGROUND: Although cognitive involvement is well documented in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), it is rarely integrated into routine physiotherapy assessments.
PURPOSE: Therefore, this study aimed to examine the test - retest reliability and discriminative validity of the 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT) under single-task, motor - motor dual-task, and cognitive - motor dual-task conditions in children with DMD.
METHODS: Twenty-three boys with DMD and 12 typically developing (TD) children completed the 10MWT under single-task, motor - motor dual-task, and cognitive - motor dual-task conditions.

BACKGROUND: Dual-task walking is used as a treatment, for gait assessment, and as an outcome measure in Parkinson's disease (PD). Movement smoothness, i.e. its non-intermittency, is a movement cardinal feature. This study assesses whether dual-tasking reduces gait smoothness in PD alongside reducing speed, one of its well-known effects.
METHODS: The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, instrumented with an inertial sensor fixed to the back, was administered to 33 PD patients (15 females; age: median = 71 years; IQR = 10) to assess two walking types: straight-walking and turning-while-walking. The TUG

BACKGROUND: Falls are common and dangerous for stroke survivors. Current fall risk assessment methods rely on subjective scales. Objective sensor-based methods could improve prediction accuracy.
OBJECTIVE: Develop machine learning models using inertial sensors to objectively classify fall risk in stroke survivors. Determine optimal sensor configurations and clinical test protocols.
METHODS: 21 stroke survivors performed balance, Timed Up and Go, 10 Meter Walk, and Sit-to-Stand tests with and without dual-tasking. A total of 8 motion sensors captured lower limb and trunk kinematics, and 92 sp

BACKGROUND: Dual tasking constitutes a large portion of most activities of daily living; in real-life situations, people need to not only maintain balance and mobility skills, but also perform other cognitive or motor tasks at the same time. Interest toward dual-task training (DTT) is increasing as traditional interventions may not prepare patients to adequately face the challenges of most activities of daily living. These usually involve simultaneous cognitive and motor tasks, and they often show a decline in performance. Cognitive-motor interference (CMI) has been investigated in different n

BACKGROUND: Dual-task paradigms are increasingly recognized as critical measures of functional impairment in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Although dual-task assessments offer valuable insights into real-life functioning, methodological inconsistencies limit their interpretability and clinical applicability. This scoping review systematically mapped cognitive-motor dual-task assessments used in MS research to identify methodological trends and gaps and guide future research and clinical practice.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, search

BACKGROUND: Motor and cognitive impairments in multiple sclerosis are progressive in nature and impair independence and overall quality of life. Although the use of a treadmill improves gait and endurance, there is limited benefit in regard to cognitive motor integration. Virtual reality offers multi-sensory, task-oriented environments that can enhance engagement and combine motor and cognitive rehabilitation.
OBJECTIVES: This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of VR-enhanced treadmill training versus conventional treadmill training on gait, endurance, balance, and cognitive-motor p

BACKGROUND: Dual tasks are used to evaluate the physical and cognitive abilities in multitasking scenarios. However, most dual tasks in the literature are not representative of daily life situations, which could question their relevance.
PURPOSE: This work thus aimed at comparing two dual tasks, one frequently used in the literature and one that is more realistic, to determine if they generated different spatiotemporal gait parameters.
METHODS: Thirty-five healthy older adults were filmed while performing gait under three conditions: simple gait, walking while counting backwards and walking

BACKGROUND: Physical and cognitive function, both of which decline with aging, are significantly interrelated. Although numerous studies have investigated the effect of physical exercise on cognitive function, relatively few have examined the impact of pure cognitive training on physical performance.
OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to summarize the effects of pure cognitive training on balance and mobility in older adults.
METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycInfo) were searched in February 2025. Randomized controlled trials that investigated the effect of pure cogniti

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia symptoms have a significant impact on the ability to perform activities of daily living. These activities require the ability to perform two or more tasks at the same time, which is known as a dual task.
PURPOSE: To analyze physical and cognitive performance differences between memory and arithmetic dual tasks.
METHODS: Twenty-five women with fibromyalgia participated in this study. Participants performed three physical tests (back scratch, arm curl, and 10-step stair) as a single task and under two types of dual task (memory and arithmetic).
RESULTS: Differences be
