BACKGROUND: We used fMRI to examine functional brain abnormalities of German-speaking dyslexics who suffer from slow effortful reading but not from a reading accuracy problem. Similar to acquired cases of letter-by-letter reading, the developmental cases exhibited an abnormal strong effect of length (i.e., number of letters) on response time for words and pseudowords.
RESULTS: Corresponding to lesions of left occipito-temporal (OT) regions in acquired cases, we found a dysfunction of this region in our developmental cases who failed to exhibit responsiveness of left OT regions to the length o

We report the case of a Spanish patient SC who misread 55 per cent of the single words shown to her. SC's reading accuracy was affected by word imageability and frequency. Nonword reading was very poor. The majority of SC's errors to real-word targets bore a close visual similarity to the items that elicited them, but there was no indication of an effect of serial position on the probability that a letter from a target word would be incorporated into the error made to that word. SC made some visual errors in object naming and also showed evidence of a general semantic impairment. We consider t

Patients with surface dyslexia have disproportionate difficulty pronouncing irregularly spelled words (e.g. pint), suggesting impaired use of lexical-semantic information to mediate phonological retrieval. Patients with this deficit also make characteristic 'regularization' errors, in which an irregularly spelled word is mispronounced by incorrect application of regular spelling-sound correspondences (e.g. reading plaid as 'played'), indicating over-reliance on sublexical grapheme-phoneme correspondences. We examined the neuroanatomical correlates of this specific error type in 45 patients wit

This study addresses the issue of the existence of whole-word phonological representations of disyllabic and multisyllabic words in the Chinese mental lexicon. A Cantonese brain-injured dyslexic individual with semantic deficits, YKM, was assessed on his abilities to read aloud and to comprehend disyllabic words containing homographic heterophonous characters, the pronunciation of which can only be disambiguated in word context. Superior performance on reading to comprehension was found. YKM could produce the target phonological forms without understanding the words. The dissociation is taken

The authors report a treatment study of a child (CK) who suffered a left-hemisphere stroke at age 6.3 years, a few months before beginning school. Despite complete recovery of spoken language abilities, CK failed to acquire written language abilities. Neurolinguistic assessment 2 years after the stroke revealed marked impairments in working memory, deficits in acquiring a sublexical reading strategy, and a very rudimentary orthographic network. Functional imaging demonstrated activation in posterior language areas during reading of familiar words while the attempt to read unfamiliar words acti

The role of stems and prefixes in complex nonword reading was investigated in unimpaired readers and five individuals with acquired dyslexia. All participants completed a reading aloud task (and the reading impaired individuals also completed a repetition task) with four different types of nonwords: prefix + stem (refront), non-prefix + stem (tefront), prefix + non-stem (refrint), non-prefix + non-stem (tefrint); and prefixed and non-prefixed filler words. The unimpaired readers responded fastest to nonwords containing two morphemes (prefix + stem), slower to nonwords with one morpheme (non-pr

We report a Cantonese-speaking brain-damaged patient, CML, who demonstrates better oral reading than oral naming and better writing to dictation than written naming. Such dissociations are taken as evidence for nonsemantic routes for the production of spoken and written Chinese words. The occurrence of tonal errors in CML's reading aloud informs us about the structure of phonological representations. We propose that it is a nonlinear structure, similar to that which has been proposed in tonal phonology of Chinese. Specific impairment to these representations may lead to a dissociation between

We report two patients with acquired phonological dyslexia who have great difficulty reading affixed words. Experiment 1 demonstrates that both patients' reading performance is influenced by the apparent morphological status of words by comparing the patients' reading of suffixed and pseudo-suffixed words. Experiment 2 was designed to examine reading performance of both regularly and irregularly inflected words. Experiment 3 examines the patients' reading of derivational forms with particular emphasis of the role of 'semantic transparency'. Experiment 4 tested both patients' reading of prefixe

Acquired dyslexia compromises reading skills following diffuse or focal brain injuries, typically affecting the left hemisphere, in individuals who presented normal reading abilities before the pathological event. Evidence supports a strong connection between the neural basis of music, particularly rhythm, and language, highlighting the potential of music-based interventions to enhance reading in developmental dyslexia. However, the effects of music and rhythm on reading skills in post-stroke acquired dyslexia remain unexplored. This pilot study tested the feasibility and preliminary effective

In English, the relationship between the written and spoken forms of words is relatively opaque, leading to proposals that skilled reading requires two procedures: (a) a sublexical grapheme/phoneme conversion process allowing the correct reading of regular words (CAT) and new or pseudowords (ZAT); (b) a lexical process necessary to read irregular words accurately (TWO) and assumed to be the dominant process for familiar words. However, it has been argued that the sublexical process may be sufficient in highly transparent languages such as Welsh. If this is the case, damage to the sublexical pr

Background: Language disorders and dyslexia are associated with atypical language- and reading-related processing, but findings from functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) studies remain heterogeneous. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized existing fNIRS evidence, quantified hemodynamic differences relative to controls, and examined whether different outcomes showed different levels of consistency. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched through 9 January 2026. Eligible studies included individuals with language disorders or dyslexia assessed using fNIRS

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies in right-brain-damaged patients with an acquired reading disorder have shown that omission and substitution errors in reading single words and pseudowords may result from two different mechanisms: the association of spatial neglect with altered eye movements (neglect dyslexia), which produces left-sided omissions, or an enhancement of a crowding phenomenon (crowding dyslexia), responsible for less lateralized substitutions. This study aims to provide normative data for the Spacing Words and Pseudowords (SWAP) reading test for the Italian population, a novel tool se

According to the primary systems hypothesis, reading requires interactions of visual-orthographic, phonological and semantic systems. Damage to each primary system generates very different types of acquired dyslexia. Variants of the connectionist 'triangle' models of reading have been developed to investigate individual acquired dyslexia. However, only a few studies have investigated multiple acquired alexia within one framework. Importantly, there are no studies that simultaneously simulate both central dyslexia (e.g. surface and phonological dyslexia) and peripheral dyslexia (e.g. pure alexi

Lexical retrieval and reading aloud are often viewed as two separate processes. However, they are not completely separate-they share components. This study assessed the effect of an impairment in a shared component, the phonological output lexicon, on lexical retrieval and on reading aloud. Because the phonological output lexicon is part of the lexical route for reading, individuals with an impairment in this lexicon may be forced to read aloud via the sublexical route and therefore show a reading pattern that is typical of surface dyslexia. To examine the effect of phonological output lexicon

Phonological dyslexia is a written language disorder characterized by poor reading of nonwords when compared with relatively preserved ability in reading real words. In this study, we report the case of FG, a 74-year-old man with phonological dyslexia. The nature and origin of his reading impairment were assessed using tasks involving activation and explicit manipulation of phonological representations as well as reading of words and nonwords in which the nature and complexity of grapheme-to-phoneme conversion rules (GPC rules) were manipulated. FG also underwent an extensive neuropsychologica

Seven subjects who were neurologically impaired following encephalitis (n = 2), head injury (n = 3), and stroke (n = 2) were referred several years previously because of acquired dyslexia. Two were almost totally alexic, 2 were surface dyslexic, 2 were deep dyslexic and 1 was a letter-by-letter reader. Following a period of rehabilitation, the 2 with alexia became surface dyslexic and letter-by-letter readers; 1 of the deep dyslexics showed some improvements but remained a deep dyslexic; and the letter-by-letter reader learned to read more quickly. At follow-up, 6 to 10 years later, there had

Children with dyslexia exhibit slow and inaccurate reading, as well as problems in executive functions. Decreased signal activation in brain regions related to visual processing and executive functions has been observed with functional magnetic resonance imaging with reports of sex differences in brain patterns for visual processing regions. However, the underlying neurochemistry associated with deficits in executive functions for children with dyslexia has not been thoroughly evaluated. Reading ability and executive functions were assessed in fifty-three children [ages 8-12 years old, dyslexi

We report a Japanese-speaking patient who showed acquired phonological dyslexia only in Kanji; difficulty in reading two-character Kanji nonwords despite her ability to read Kana nonwords, Kana words, and two-character Kanji inconsistent-atypical words; and inability to repeat reversal nonwords. We investigated the mechanism of nonword reading impairment using the dual-route cascaded model, it was likely that the reading deficit of Kanji nonwords with multiple pronunciations resulted from the dysfunction of the character-to-sound conversion rule system. The patient's reading performance on the

Reading and writing difficulties are commonly observed after traumatic and non-traumatic brain disorders (T-nTBDs). In this study, we investigated whether: (a) differentiation between acquired dyslexia (AD) and aphasia is possible in patients with T-nTBDs; (b) AD patterns constitute the subtype of Acquired Phonological Dyslexia (APhD); and (c) there are causal interactions between brain lesions and the APhD phenotype. A total of 22 Greek patients with T-nTBDs receiving a six-month intensive speech treatment were recruited for the study. The Western Aphasia Battery (WAB) and the Dyslexia Adults

Reading and writing impairments are frequent in primary progressive aphasia (PPA), yet their characterization in Spanish-speaking populations remains limited due to language-specific orthographic properties. The present study examined reading and writing impairments in 17 Spanish-speaking participants diagnosed with PPA (9 logopenic, 4 semantic, and 4 nonfluent), with the aim of identifying patterns of acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia across PPA variants. A single-case series design was employed, including individuals diagnosed with PPA and matched healthy control subjects. Participants were a
