While ATPase Copper Transporting Beta ( ATP7B ), Dystonia-1 ( DYT-1 ), Lysine (K) Methyl transferase 2B ( KMT2B ), and Adenylate Cyclase 5 ( ADCY5 ) gene mutations are well-characterized causes of childhood-onset choreo-dystonic movement disorders, G protein subunit alpha O1 (GNAO1)-related disorders are not commonly suspected. The GNAO1 gene is crucial for neuronal transmission, and its mutation has been linked to neurodevelopmental delay, infantile-onset epilepsy, and movement disorders. To the best of our knowledge, only five Indian cases have been reported to date. We report a 9-year-old g

BACKGROUND: Dystonic tics differ from clonic tics by their slower and more sustained nature. Dystonic tics are often present in patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) and other tic-disorders. However, their phenomenology and impact on overall impairment have not been extensively studied.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed clinical history and tic duration in video-recordings from patients with TS evaluated at our movement disorders clinic. Dystonic tics were defined as those lasting ≥ 1000 ms (ms).
RESULTS: Of the total of 201 patients with TS, there were 156 with video-recordings suitable for

Based on their phenomenology, tics can be classified as clonic, dystonic, and tonic. Although tic syndromes are considered to be childhood disorders, there are reports on (clonic) tics developing late in life. Literature on dystonic tics is sparse, and it is unclear whether adult-onset dystonic tics are part of the same disorder spectrum that includes Tourette's syndrome or represent a discrete entity. We describe here 11 patients with adult-onset primary dystonic tics. Ten patients (90.1%) were males. Mean age at onset was 42.2 ± 14.9 years. More than 60% had both motor clonic and dystonic ti

BACKGROUND: X-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP) is a rare disorder characterized by adult-onset, progressive dystonia that, over time, is combined with or replaced by features of parkinsonism. Gait impairment is common.
METHODS: Case series of 4 XDP patients with a unique gait disorder.
RESULTS: The patients displayed a characteristic gait disorder with combined dystonic and parkinsonian gait features, with phasic knee bending. Of these patients, all had parkinsonism and three-quarters had prominent dystonic features, but 1 had predominant parkinsonism and subtle dystonic features.

The pathophysiology of dystonic tremor and essential tremor remains partially understood. In patients with medication-refractory dystonic tremor or essential tremor, deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the thalamus or posterior subthalamic area has evolved into a promising treatment option. However, the optimal DBS targets for these disorders remains unknown. This retrospective study explored the optimal targets for DBS in essential tremor and dystonic tremor using a combination of volumes of tissue activated estimation and functional and structural connectivity analyses. We included 20 pat

OBJECT: Knowledge is scarce about movement disorders that follow neurosurgical operations other than functional stereotactic surgery. The cases of 14 patients who suffered from movement disorders secondary to craniocerebral or spinal surgery are analyzed. None of these patients was initially treated by any of the authors.
METHODS: Twelve patients underwent surgery for cerebral diseases. Nine of these patients harbored tumors and three patients had neurovascular disorders. Two patients underwent spinal surgery for cervicothoracic ependymoma or for multiple cervical disc herniations. Twelve of

There is evidence that reduced melatonin secretion is associated with the pathophysiology of neuroleptic-induced movement disorders including tardive dyskinesia and Parkinsonism. It has been recently reported that pinealectomized rats developed increased incidence and severity of spontaneous chewing movements compared to normal controls. Increased chewing movements in rats has been suggested to reflect acute drug-induced dystonias in humans. To investigate the relationship between melatonin secretion and the pathophysiology of neuroleptic-induced dystonic movements, the presence and size of pi

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by abnormal muscle contractions that, at their most severe, lead to a life-threatening condition - dystonic crisis. Yet, therapeutic options remain limited by our incomplete understanding of what neural circuits underly the condition. Although cerebellar nuclei neurons are implicated in the origin of baseline dystonic symptoms, it is unclear whether their activity drives dystonic crisis. To explore this role, we found that cerebellar abnormalities and neural inhibition were recurring targets in patients with dystonic crisis, implicatin

Dystonia in childhood may be severely disabling and often unremitting and unrecognized. Considered a rare disorder, dystonic symptoms in childhood are pervasive in many conditions including disorders of developmental delay, cerebral palsy (CP), autism, neurometabolic, neuroinflammatory, and neurogenetic disorders. Collectively, there is a need to recognize the role of early postures and movements which characterize phases of normal fetal, infant, and child development as a backdrop to the many facets of dystonia in early childhood neurological disorders and to be aware of the developmental con

BACKGROUND: Peripherally induced movement disorders (PIMDs) represent a rare and debated complication of peripheral trauma.
PHENOMENOLOGY SHOWN: We report a case of task-specific "lipstick" jerky dystonic tremor as a consequence of traumatic shoulder injury, successfully treated with EMG-guided botulinum toxin injections.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE: This case expands the phenotypic spectrum of PIMDs, with a visual example of a task-specific dystonic tremor after peripheral trauma, and the efficacy of EMG-guided botulinum toxin treatment in the setting of posttraumatic dystonic tremor.

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterised by sustained muscle contractions that produce repetitive twisting movements or abnormal postures. It can be classified according to the aetiology as primary (idiopathic and genetic forms), or secondary. The presentation associated with generalised, intense episodes and with exacerbation of severe muscle contractures and usually refractory to traditional pharmacotherapy is known as dystonic status or dystonic storm. In the present article, a case is presented of a 33-year-old patient with a history of congenital deafness, stimulant use disorder and

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is a focal dystonia characterized by sensorimotor integration abnormalities and proprioceptive dysfunction. Since proprioception is essential for bodily awareness, we hypothesized that CD patients may have an impairment in dystonic posture awareness. More information on this issue could be useful to better understand whether dystonic posture affects bodily perception in CD and could help in the development of specific rehabilitation strategies based on proprioceptive input manipulation to restore bodily awareness.

INTRODUCTION: Besides cerebellar ataxia, various other movement disorders, including dystonia, could manifest as main clinical symptoms in ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T). However, the clinical characteristics of dystonic A-T patients are not clearly elucidated.
METHODS: To investigate the characteristics of dystonic A-T, we screened previous reports with A-T patients presenting dystonia as a main manifestation, and included 38 dystonic A-T patients from 16 previous studies and our 2 cases. We reviewed clinical and demographic data of dystonic A-T patients. Additionally, to figure out clinical me

Dystonic tics, in contrast to clonic tics, are relatively slow and temporarily sustained twisting, pulling, or squeezing movements producing briefly maintained abnormal postures. Because dystonic tics often present diagnostic difficulties, we studied these motor tics in 156 patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS). In addition to clonic motor and vocal/phonic tics, seen in all patients, 89 (57%) of them exhibited one or more dystonic tics. The most common dystonic tics were oculogyric deviations (43 patients), blepharospasm (23), and dystonic neck movements (11). Blinking (110) and facial twitch

A classification of child dystonias is proposed as a guide to etiological diagnosis. The analysis of symptoms and signs provides a distinction between dystonia and other involuntary movements: dystonia is a tonic involuntary movement which appears during voluntary activity as a slow and involuntary movement. Two groups of child dystonic syndromes can be distinguished: 1) dystonic syndromes where dystonia is the main neurologic abnormality; they result mainly from toxic and anoxic disorders and from torsion dystonia; 2) dystonic syndromes with associated dystonia and intellectual impairment; th

We present the clinical history of a woman with idiopathic episodic focal lingual dystonic spasms. Although dystonic spasms of the tongue have been reported as a primary persistent phenomenon and as a feature of secondary dystonias, primary episodic lingual dystonias are rare, tend to be unilateral, and in contrast to most other paroxysmal movement disorders, do not appear responsive to anti-epileptic drugs.
