Environmental and occupational exposure to chromium compounds, especially hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], is widely recognized as a potential nephrotoxic in humans and animals. Its toxicity is associated with the overproduction of free radicals, which induces oxidative damage. Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench is an herbaceous perennial plant rich in phenolic components and frequently used for its medicinal benefits. The current work evaluated the effectiveness of E. purpurea (EP) against oxidative stress and nephrotoxicity induced by potassium dichromate in male rats. Male Wistar rats were divided

BACKGROUND: Atopic eczema (AE) is a chronic inflammatory and pruritic skin disease. There is still an unmet need for topical anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic substances exhibiting an excellent safety profile. The endocannabinoid system is known to regulate various aspects of cutaneous barrier and immune functions, thus targeting it may be a valid approach for alleviating the symptoms of AE.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the putative efficacy of Echinacea purpurea-derived alkylamides (Ec. extract) activating cannabinoid (CB)-2 receptors in exerting anti-inflammatory effects and alleviating symptoms

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are plant steroidal hormones that are crucial for plant growth and development, with dwarfism being a hallmark of BR deficiency. DWARF4 (DWF4) is a key enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting C22 oxidation step in the BR biosynthetic pathway. Understanding its role in ornamental plants is crucial for developing dwarf varieties that can significantly enhance their aesthetics and broaden their applications. This study aimed to provide the functional analysis of the DWF4 gene isolated from Echinacea purpurea. We found that the EpDWF4 gene comprised a 1458 bp open reading fr

BACKGROUND: Pruritus reduces quality of life and may occur at different sites of the body. To alleviate pruritus, lipid replenishing and rehydration of the skin is often unsatisfactory. Thus, products with additional antipruritic effects are needed.
OBJECTIVES: Antipruritic effects and cosmetic properties of two different emulsions, water-in-oil (w/o) or oil-in-water (o/w), and a shampoo containing a lipophilic Echinacea purpurea root extract (Ec.-extract) were assessed in adults suffering from pruritus.
METHODS: Adults (n = 55) with pruritus of the body applied a w/o emulsion for 2 weeks. I

INTRODUCTION: When directly exposed to various echinacea fractions, human leukocytes ex vivo are strongly stimulated to proliferate and to produce immunostimulation and inflammatory cytokines. A comparison of fractions containing lipoidal small molecules and high-molecular-weight water-soluble polysaccharides indicates that the latter are substantially more potent as immunostimulants. Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, E. angustifolia DC, and E. pallida (Nutt.), Nutt. extracts, and each plant part contain significantly potent constituents. Flow cytometric techniques were utilized.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose represents one of the most common drug-induced liver injuries (DILI) worldwide. Oxidative damage to the hepatocytes and their resultant autophagy are the key components in the APAP-induced DILI. Echinacea purpurea polysaccharide (EPPS), the component extracted from the root of Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, shows various biological functions including immunoregulation and antioxidant activity.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to elucidate the protective effect of EPPS against APAP-induced DILI and the underlying mechanisms.
RESULTS: EPPS attenuates APAP ov

The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes viral encephalitis leading to neural damage, is a major threat in most Asian countries. The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) present in the viral genome is the key component for genome replication, making it an attractive target for antiviral drug development. In this study, the natural products from Echinacea angustifolia were retrieved for structure-based virtual screening against JEV-RdRp. The top six compounds (Echinacoside, Echinacin, Rutin, Cynaroside, Quercetagetin 7-glucoside, and Kaempferol-3-glucoside)

Echinacea is commonly used as a dietary supplement owing to its putative anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial activities. Unfortunately, determining risk posed to human health is challenging. A novel combination of chemical and biological characterization was employed for selection of a representative extract sample used for in vivo investigation of the immunomodulatory properties of Echinacea (E.) purpurea. In vitro cytokine profiling showed the extract could stimulate pro-inflammatory cytokine production in the absence of detectable endotoxin. An in-depth in vivo evaluation of the

Echinacea purpurea petal extract (EPPE) may attenuate type I allergic symptoms. Dietary EPPE decreased nasal scratching and sneezing in allergic rhinitis model mice. This decrease may be attributed to the decrease in serum immunoglobulin E levels and the potential suppression of chemical mediator release from mast cells, as suggested by previous in vitro findings.

In recent years, due to the growing concern about recurrent epidemics by Toxoplasma gondii and other pathogens in Brazil, there has been an increase in the use of different preparations obtained from Echinacea purpurea in order to test their effectiveness against these infections. Although studies have suggested the beneficial effects of this species against the influenza virus, no data are available on the use of E. purpurea aqueous extract in T. gondii infections. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of its administration in Swiss mice submitted to acute and prolonged infect
