Physical Activity, Mind Wandering, Affect, and Sleep: An Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: A considerable portion of daily thought is spent in mind wandering. This behavior has been related to positive (eg, future planning, problem solving) and negative (eg, unhappiness, impaired cognitive performance) outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Based on previous research suggesting future-oriented (ie, prospective) mind wandering may support autobiographical planning and self-regulation, this study examined associations between hourly mind wandering and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and the impact of affect and daily sleep on these relations. METHODS: College-aged adults (N

Social anxiety and cannabis use: an analysis from ecological momentary assessment.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear especially vulnerable to cannabis-related problems, yet little is known about the antecedents of cannabis-related behaviors among this high-risk population. The present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine the relations among social anxiety, cannabis craving, state anxiety, situational variables, and cannabis use in the natural environment during ad-lib cannabis use episodes. Participants were 49 current cannabis users. During the two-week EMA period, social anxiety significantly interacted with cannabis craving to predict

Momentary Emotion Regulation Strategies and Pain Experience Among Adults With Chronic Pain: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVES: The intention of this study was to characterize the real-time momentary relationship between emotion regulation strategies and the pain experience (ie intensity, interference, and negative affect) among adults with chronic pain. Chronic pain is a significant public health concern. Psychological treatments are effective for treating chronic pain, but long-term follow-up studies are limited, and treatment effect sizes are small. Identifying modifiable treatment targets, such as emotion regulation (ER), is critical to improve interventions. ER (ie, cognitive and attentional strategies

Considerations for Ecological Momentary Assessments in Alcohol Use: A Narrative Review.

Background: Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMAs), a newer method assessing alcohol use, present advantages over Timeline Follow Back (TLFB). EMAs have progressed from telephone calls to smartphone applications, providing opportunities for growth in a naturalistic assessment. This narrative review provides an overview of smartphone-based EMAs in alcohol clinical trials showing strengths/weaknesses, implications of designs, assessment durations, validity, and compliance. Methods: A literature review was conducted from March 2020 to April 2025, with no limitations on article time frame as EMAs

Combining Mobile Crowdsensing and Ecological Momentary Assessments in the Healthcare Domain.

The increasing prevalence of smart mobile devices (e.g., smartphones) enables the combined use of mobile crowdsensing (MCS) and ecological momentary assessments (EMA) in the healthcare domain. By correlating qualitative longitudinal and ecologically valid EMA assessment data sets with sensor measurements in mobile apps, new valuable insights about patients (e.g., humans who suffer from chronic diseases) can be gained. However, there are numerous conceptual, architectural and technical, as well as legal challenges when implementing a respective software solution. Therefore, the work at hand (1)

A day in the life: An ecological momentary assessment of people's experiences with vaping.

OBJECTIVE: Curbing the use of vapes among young people is a public health priority. Understanding people's vaping experiences and the contextual factors influencing use is key to informing effective behavioural interventions. Using ecological momentary assessment, this study aimed to explore the daily vaping-related experiences of young Australians who vape. METHODS: Australians aged 14- to 39-years who use vapes (n=72; 54% men; 42% 14-17 years, 13% 18-24 years, 46% 25-39 years) were recruited via social media and personal networks. Using an app-based diary, participants shared vaping-related

Ecological Momentary Assessment Reveals Causal Effects of Music Enrichment on Infant Mood.

Music appears universally in human infancy with self-evident effects: as many parents know intuitively, infants love to be sung to. The long-term effects of parental singing remain unclear, however. In an offset-design exploratory 10-week randomized trial conducted in 2023 (110 families of young infants, Mage = 3.67 months, 53% female, 73% White), the study manipulated the frequency of infant-directed singing via a music enrichment intervention. Results, measured by smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), show that infant-directed singing causes general post-intervention improv

Emotion dynamics in current and remitted depression: an ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals in a depressive episode and healthy controls exhibit robust differences on affect dynamics captured with ecological momentary assessment (EMA). However, few studies have explored affect dynamics in individuals in remission from depression, and results have been mixed. METHODS: A community sample of 18-year-olds (N = 345) completed diagnostic interviews and EMA probing emotions and low interest/motivation 5× daily for 2 weeks. Affect home base, variability, and inertia were compared across currently depressed, remitted, and never-depressed groups. RESULTS: Both depress

Sleep, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation: An ecological momentary assessment and actigraphy study.

Recent research shows that sleep disturbances are linked to increased suicidal ideation. In the present longitudinal cohort study, we used subjective (ecological momentary assessment, EMA) and objective (actigraphy) measures to examine the effects of sleep parameters on next-day suicidal ideation. Further, we examined hopelessness as a mediator between insufficient sleep and increased suicidal ideation. Individuals with current suicidal ideation (N = 82) completed 21 days of EMA and actigraphy to estimate suicidal ideation, hopelessness and sleep parameters. Multilevel linear-mixed models were

Patterns of Skin Picking in Skin Picking Disorder: Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Skin picking disorder (SPD) is an understudied mental illness that is classified as a body-focused repetitive behavior disorder. Literature suggests that pathological skin picking is strongly integrated into the daily lives of affected individuals and may involve a high degree of variability in terms of episode characteristics, frequency, and intensity. However, existing data on the phenomenology of SPD are limited and typically involve retrospective assessments, which may fail to accurately capture the behavior's variability. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate skin pickin

How ambient temperature affects mood: an ecological momentary assessment study in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has suggested that an increase in temperature can negatively affect mental health and increase hospitalization for mental illness. It is not clear, however, what factors or mechanisms mediate this association. We aimed to (1) investigate the associations between ambient temperatures and bad daily mood, and (2) identify variables affecting the strength of these associations (modifiers) including the time, the day of the week and the year of the mood rating, socio-demographic characteristics, sleep quality, psychiatric disorders and the personality trait neuroticism i

Individual Hearing Aid Benefit in Real Life Evaluated Using Ecological Momentary Assessment.

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) was used in 24 adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss who were seeking first hearing-aid (HA) fitting or HA renewal. At two stages in the aural rehabilitation process, just before HA fitting and after an average 3-month HA adjustment period, the participants used a smartphone-based EMA system for 3 to 4 days. A questionnaire app allowed for the description of the environmental context as well as assessments of various hearing-related dimensions and of well-being. In total, 2,042 surveys were collected. The main objectives of the analysis were threefold:

Exposure to built and social environments and momentary well-being: A geographic ecological momentary assessment study in Montreal.

Understanding how built and social environments shape momentary well-being is essential for advancing urban health research and planning. This study investigated temporal, social, and environmental predictors of daily well-being using a geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) approach. Seven-day GEMA measures were collected between 2018 and 2021 among 889 residents of Greater Montreal, recruited through the INTERACT and REM studies. Participants (mean age = 41.7 years; age range = 18-80 years; 55.7% women) completed the Short Mood Scale three times daily via the EthicaData smartphone

Momentary skills use predicts decreased binge eating and purging early in day treatment: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging research indicates that skills acquisition may be important to behavior change in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for eating disorders. This study investigated whether skills use assessed in real time during the initial 4 weeks of CBT-based day treatment was associated with momentary eating disorder behavior change and rapid response to treatment. METHODS: Participants with DSM-5 bulimia nervosa or purging disorder (N = 58) completed ecological momentary assessments (EMA) several times daily for the first 28 days of treatment. EMA assessed skills use, the occurrence of bi

Feasibility of using Ecological Momentary Assessment to investigate suicidality among inpatient adolescents.

Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) presents a promising method to study short-term occurrences and trajectories of suicidal thoughts. This study analyzed the feasibility of using intensive EMA to assess suicidal thoughts among adolescent psychiatric inpatients in Germany. Fifty-one adolescents (12-18 years old, 74.5% female) participated in 7 days of EMA data collection during their psychiatric inpatient stay. Participants reported on momentary feelings, including suicidal thoughts, via a lent smartphone 7 times per day. In addition to a baseline meeting, adolescents attended a follow-up me

Using an ecological momentary assessment protocol to understand problem anger in veterans.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Problem anger is highly destructive, and is one of the most commonly reported issues in military and veteran populations. The goal of this study was to use ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to explore and characterize moment-to-moment experiences of problem anger in a sample of Australian veterans. METHODS: Sixty veterans with problem anger (measured on the Dimensions of Anger Reactions Scale) completed measures of anger and anger rumination, before and after a 10-day EMA period which assessed the frequency, intensity, and expression of momentary anger experienc

Daily Contributors of Tinnitus Loudness and Distress: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a heterogeneous condition which may be associated with moderate to severe disability, but the reasons why only a subset of individuals is burdened by the condition are not fully clear. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows a better understanding of tinnitus by capturing the fluctuations of tinnitus symptoms, such as distress and loudness, and psychological processes, such as emotional arousal, overall stress, mood, and concentration and how these variables interact over time. Whether any of those variables have an influence over the next day, that is, whether any

Microtemporal Relationships in the Fear Avoidance Model: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVES: Current literature in pediatric pain evaluates the Fear Avoidance model (FAM) pathways at the trait (or macrotemporal) level, but it is unknown if these pathways also occur at the state (or microtemporal) level. Identifying microtemporal processes can improve our understanding of how the relationships within the Fear Avoidance constructs vary when specific Fear Avoidance variables wax and wane. We hypothesized that changes in FAM constructs would be associated with changes in the next variable in the sequence on a microtemporal level, including: (1) higher pain when there is more p

Aripiprazole for cocaine abstinence: a randomized-controlled trial with ecological momentary assessment.

Aripiprazole blocks psychostimulant seeking in a rat model of relapse. However, in humans, it may increase ongoing use. We tested aripiprazole specifically for relapse prevention. Methadone-maintained outpatients who were abstinent from cocaine in weeks 11-12 were randomized to double-blind aripiprazole (15 mg daily) or placebo in weeks 13-27 after 12 weeks of contingency management. Participants reported craving through ecological momentary assessment. We stopped the trial because very few (18/41) participants fulfilled the abstinence criterion. The results suggested that aripiprazole delayed
