Comparative assessment of phytoremediation using Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Ipomoea aquatica floating beds for phytoplankton community restoration and microcystin-LR removal in eutrophic pond water.

Ecological floating beds (EFBs) represent a sustainable, nature-based solution for remediating eutrophic waters, with plant species selection being a critical determinant of treatment performance. This study assessed the remediation potential of three floating macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Ipomoea aquatica under cyanobacterial bloom stress. Results demonstrated that all three species significantly reduced concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus, with I. aquatica exhibiting the highest removal efficiencies (93.7% for both nitrogen and phosphorus). Notably,

Sulfate-reducing bacteria in floating macrophyte rhizospheres from an Amazonian floodplain lake in Bolivia and their association with Hg methylation.

Five subgroups of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were detected by PCR in three macrophyte rhizospheres (Polygonum densiflorum, Hymenachne donacifolia, and Ludwigia helminthorriza) and three subgroups in Eichhornia crassipes from La Granja, a floodplain lake from the upper Madeira basin. The SRB community varied according to the macrophyte species but with different degrees of association with their roots. The rhizosphere of the C4 plant Polygonum densiflorum had higher frequencies of SRB subgroups as well as higher mercury methylation potentials (27.5 to 36.1%) and carbon (16.06 +/- 5.40%), n

Concentration and speciation of heavy metals during water hyacinth composting.

The Tessier sequential extraction method was employed to investigate the changes in heavy metals speciation (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cd and Cr) during water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) composting. Results showed that, the contents of total metals concentration were increased during the composting process. The largest proportion of metals was found in the residual fraction which was in more stable form and is consequently considered unavailable for plant uptake. Reducible and oxidizable fractions of Ni, Pb and Cd were not found in all trials during water hyacinth composting. The concentrati

Predicting Plant Invasions Following China's Water Diversion Project.

China's South to North Water Diversion (SNWD) project connects portions of the Yangtze River in the south to the Yellow River system in the north, overcoming biogeographic barriers to water movement. The diversion will supply potable water to over 110 million people and provide multiple other socioeconomic benefits. However, an inadvertent negative impact of this connection includes creation of conduits for species invasions. Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) are the only aquatic plant species on China's s

Lectins from Eichornia crassipens and Lemna minor may be involved in Vibrio Cholerae El Tor adhesion.

Vibrio cholerae (Vc) has been isolated from roots of aquatic plants during epidemic or interepidemic periods. It has been suggested that the lectins from the roots of aquatic plants play a role as reservoirs of Vc. In this paper, we evaluated the activity of lectins from Lemna minor and Eichornia crassipens plants as potential mediators of the Vc strain El Tor (Vct). We found that Lemna minor extract showed high specificity towards blood groups O and B. Eichornia crassipens extract showed high specificity towards blood group A and O. Sugar competition experiments demonstrated that Lemna minor
