Electrochemotherapy is a new modality of local cancer treatment that increases the delivery of chemotherapy drugs into tumor cells by applying intense electric fields. This novel electrochemotherapy application was applied as an adjuvant to surgery and eliminated intranasal tumors in dog. The treatment challenges are the surgery limitations due to anatomy and residual tumor in the bone cavity. Most of the tumoral mass on nasal cavity was surgically removed. The internal nasal cavity was immersed in liquid and bleomycin before applying electric field. The solution was necessary to increase the

INTRODUCTION: Bone metastatic disease is a major cause of pain and decreased quality of life in patients with cancer. In addition to systemic therapy and pain control with narcotic analgesics, standard local treatments include palliation with radiation therapy and surgery. However, 20-30 % of patients do not respond to conventional treatments, increasing the interest in alternative therapies. We present the results of a new minimally invasive technique in the treatment of bone metastases.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients affected by painful bone metastases were treated with electrochemotherapy (

INTRODUCTION: Local progression of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) after failure of standard therapies may cause pain, ulceration, and bleeding. As patients are fully aware of the tumor growth, they might suffer high grade anxiety. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a new local palliative treatment for skin metastases of malignant melanoma or other tumors, including squamous head e neck cancer patients.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of ECT in patients with local progression of PTC.
METHODS: Four patients with local progression of PTC were treated with ECT based on Bleomycin, and evaluated ac

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) enhances the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic agents by administering the drug in combination with short intense electric pulses. ECT is effective because electric pulses permeabilize tumour cell membranes and allow non-permeant drugs, such as bleomycin, to enter the cells. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the anti-tumour effectiveness of ECT with bleomycin on cutaneous and subcutaneous tumours. This article summarizes results obtained in independent clinical trials performed by five cancer centres. A total of 291 cutaneous or subcutaneous tumours of basal ce

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a locally aggressive mesenchymal tumor that involves the lymphovascular system, with a tendency to become multifocal. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is considered a valuable treatment option in selected patients with cutaneous and subcutaneous KS lesions.
METHODS: We report a retrospective study that included 14 classic and endemic KS patients that underwent ECT sessions for the treatment of KS cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions at our institution.
RESULTS: According to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 criteria,

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous recurrence from breast cancer can pose a clinical challenge. It might be the only disease site, or could be part of disseminated disease, and often profoundly affects quality of life. Electrochemotherapy is a palliative treatment using electric pulses to locally permeabilize tumor cells and thereby significantly increase bleomycin cytotoxicity. Collaborating with the International Network for Sharing Practice on ElectroChemoTherapy (INSPECT), we consecutively and prospectively accrued data on patients treated with electrochemotherapy for cutaneous metastases from breast c

BACKGROUND: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is currently used to treat unresectable superficial tumours of different histotypes through the combination of cytotoxic chemotherapy and local application of electric pulses. In 2006, a collaborative project defined the ESOPE (European Standard Operating Procedures of Electrochemotherapy) guidelines to standardize the procedure. The International Network for Sharing Practices of Electrochemotherapy (InspECT) aims to refine the ESOPE and improve clinical practice. Limiting patient exposure to systemic chemotherapy would be advisable to ameliorate ECT safet

An 89-year-old female patient was diagnosed with stage IVA cervical carcinoma with bladder involvement and a concomitant perianal squamous cell carcinoma and perianal lesions, HPV positive. Due to a significant decline in quality of life (Scale ECOG 3), she initiated radiotherapy without chemosensitization. She completed a pelvic radiotherapy regimen of 4600 cGy, resulting in an improved performance status (ECOG 0), although anal lesions persisted. Given this finding, electrochemotherapy was initiated. Two sessions were administered over four months, with minimal adverse effects and no negativ

Electrochemotherapy is a novel, locoregional therapy that is used to treat cutaneous and deep-seated tumors. The electric pulses used in electrochemotherapy increase the permeability of the cell membranes of the target lesion and thus enhance the delivery of low-permeant cytotoxic drugs to the cells, leading to their death. It has also been postulated that electrochemotherapy acts as an in situ vaccination by inducing immunogenic cell death. This in turn leads to an enhanced systemic antitumor response, which could be further exploited by immunotherapy. However, only a few clinical studies hav

Electrochemotherapy is now in development for treatment of deep-seated tumors, like in bones and internal organs, such as liver. The technology is available with a newly developed electric pulse generator and long needle electrodes; however the procedures for the treatment are not standardized yet. In order to describe the treatment procedure, including treatment planning, within the ongoing clinical study, a case of successful treatment of a solitary metastasis in the liver of colorectal cancer is presented. The procedure was performed intraoperatively by inserting long needle electrodes, two

Non Hogdkin's lymphoma is the commonest malignant neoplasm in humans and in pets. Treatments include systemic chemotherapy eventually combined with radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is also used as single agent for the treatment of localized lymphoma (LSA). Albeit efficacious, this modality is potentially associated with side effects. Purpose of this study was to preliminarily evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of electrochemotherapy (ECT) in companion animals with localized lymphoma. Six patients entered the study and received two sessions of ECT under sedation. The pets had local injec

We have evaluated the efficiency of electrochemotherapy with cisplatin on cutaneous tumor lesions of breast cancer and have compared its efficiency with the efficiency of intratumoral (i.t.) administration of cisplatin alone. The study was performed on six breast cancer patients with 26 cutaneous lesions in whom all standard treatment modalities were exhausted. Of 26 lesions, 12 were treated by electrochemotherapy, six by i.t. cisplatin application, while eight were controls. In all 12 lesions treated by electrochemotherapy and followed-up for up to 26 weeks at the most, the objective response

Electrochemotherapy has been developed on the basis of in vitro data showing the huge increase of bleomycin cytotoxicity observed after cell electropermeabilization. Electrochemotherapy has been proven to be highly efficient as a local antitumor treatment on transplanted tumors (1). Indeed, electrochemotherapy resulted in high rates of tumor responses and even cures in preclinical trials on different experimental murine tumors (2). Treatment efficacy results from the local application of adequate electric pulses able to permeabilize the tumor cells located in the tissue volume crossed by the e

Skin metastases occur in 5-30% of breast cancer (BC) patients. Standard treatments include systemic therapies (chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and immunotherapy) and local treatments (surgery and radiotherapy). Electrochemotherapy (ECT) could be another option in this setting based on preclinical and clinical studies. Aim of this review was to analyze the available evidence on ECT in skin metastases from BC. Studies reporting on ECT in skin metastases from BC were included in this review. Studies not reporting toxicity or tumor response or not reporting results separately from other primary c

Anal canal adenocarcinoma is generally treated like rectal cancer. Surgery is the standard treatment in early stages and neoadjuvant chemoradiation in locally advanced tumors. Local recurrences treatment paradigm often depends on the previous therapies of either surgery or radiotherapy or systemic therapy. We present the case of a patient with tubulovillous adenocarcinoma of the anal canal which relapsed after chemoradiation. The patient refused salvage surgery and was treated with definitive electrochemotherapy under general anesthesia. Tumor electroporation performed with the insertion of th

Electrochemotherapy is a combination of high electric field and anticancer drugs. The treatment basis is electroporation or electropermeabilization of the cell membrane. Electroporation is a threshold phenomenon and, for efficient treatment, an adequate local distribution of electric field within the treated tissue is important. When this local electric field is not enough, there is a regrown tumor cell; however, if it is stronger than necessary, permanent damage to the tissue occurs. In the treatment of dogs, electrochemotherapy is not yet an established treatment for mast cell tumor in veter
