This study compares the phonatory behavior of an asymmetric vocal fold model to that of each individual vocal fold model in a hemi-configuration. Although phonation frequencies of the two folds in hemi-configurations had a ratio close to 1:3, a subharmonic synchronization between the two folds was not observed in the asymmetric model. Instead, the vibratory behavior was dominated by the dynamics of one fold only, and the other fold was enslaved to vibrate at the same frequency. Increasing subglottal pressure induced a shift in relative dominance between the two folds, leading to abrupt changes

Studies have shown strong relationships between the presence of kin and children's survival outcomes in historical and contemporary low-income contexts. However, this relationship has never been studied among an enslaved population, who encountered extremely harsh living conditions. Examining this relationship among different populations may reveal similarities and differences across contexts. The present study addresses this gap by examining the life courses of children born between 1830 and 1863 and enslaved in Suriname (n = 19,095 children) and their mothers. For the period 1848‒1863, we ca

The Yazidi community endured an unprecedented genocide by the Islamic State (ISIS) in August 2014, resulting in mass killings, kinocide, abductions, ongoing disappearances, and sexual enslavement. The intense trauma led to high prevalence rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and profound sleep disturbances. This comprehensive article integrates epidemiological data, neurobiological mechanisms, and clinical case reports to elucidate sleep disorders among Yazidi survivors. We detail the historical context, transgenerational trauma, specific sleep-related pathologie

Lineage 1 is an ancestral lineage of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) comprising five sublineages. In a previous study, we suggested that a representative of sublineage L1.1.3, present in both Mozambique and northern Brazil, SIT129, may have been brought to Brazil by sea during the long history of slavery that lasted, between Africa and Brazil, from the early 16th century to the mid-19th century. In this study, using a combination of new comparative genomics results and human migration data extracted from the SlaveVoyages.org database, we sought to more precisely reconstruct the s

Born enslaved in Jamaica, Amelia Newsham had albinism, a condition not fully understood in the eighteenth century that contributed to nascent understandings and debates regarding racial difference. Known as the "white negro," Amelia was examined and exhibited across England by "men of the Enlightenment" who sought scientific explanations for her white skin. Their ideas were published or traceable in their correspondence. But what of Amelia? This paper places a brief archive from 1791 within the context of the ongoing "race debates" of the eighteenth century to consider how she understood her o

Underserved communities-especially communities of color in the United States-face disproportionate exposure to trauma because of social and structural inequalities. These factors give rise to intergenerational transmission of trauma and inform cultural beliefs about psychotherapy and mental health care more broadly. Increasingly, individual psychotherapies developed in diverse settings, as well as community-based psychosocial interventions, show evidence of client engagement, acceptability, and efficacy. The authors describe upstream and immediate factors that increase vulnerability to trauma

This article presents an analysis of the impacts of the Guerra dos Farrapos (1835-1845) on the mortality of the population of Porto Alegre, drawing primarily on baptism and death records, comparing the periods before and after the conflict, ranging from 1825 to 1854. Anomalies can be noted in the first five years of the war, when the city was under siege from the rebels. The results, based on a calculation of infant mortality and other indicators, show not only that there were supply difficulties and deteriorated sanitary conditions, but also that mortality levels surged in response to a scarl

The study addresses an issue of possible relations between the apparent "clumsiness" of persons with Down syndrome (DS) and changes in indices of finger coordination. We hypothesized that persons with DS would prefer less challenging, safer motor strategies reflected in finger coordination patterns. Maximal single- and multi-finger force production (MVC) tasks and multi-finger tasks that required the production of a controlled time pattern (ramp) of total force were studied. As compared to typical persons, persons with DS showed lower peak forces, lower force deficit (loss of finger force in m

The French West Indies, particularly Martinique and Guadeloupe, are grappling with high rates of violence, particularly among youth, which might be deeply rooted in historical trauma from slavery. A significant portion of the population has experienced abuse and violence in early life, prompting researchers to explore the connection with attachment theory. The transatlantic slave trade tore families apart and disrupted the secure attachments that are essential for healthy emotional development. Children raised without stable caregivers often develop insecure attachment styles, which may have b

Scholars, activists, and policymakers have long called for reparations-a process of repair and restitution for harm and injustices done-to descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States as a structural intervention to address historic and ongoing injustices. However, there has been very limited epidemiologic work examining reparations. We explore some of the epidemiologic benefits and challenges of using causal inference frameworks to model reparations as an example of a large-scale, structural intervention that pushes the limits of what is considered "well-defined" and may violate key

Mass incarceration is a sociostructural driver of profound health inequalities in the United States. The political and economic forces underpinning mass incarceration are deeply rooted in centuries of the enslavement of people of African descent and the genocide and displacement of Indigenous people and is inextricably connected to labor exploitation, racial discrimination, the criminalization of immigration, and behavioral health problems such as mental illness and substance use disorders. This article focuses on major public health crises and advances in state and federal prisons and discuss

This history of the disease categories "yaws" and "syphilis" explores the interplay between European and African medical cultures in the early modern Atlantic world. The assertion made by both early modern and modern medical authorities, that yaws and syphilis are the same disease, prompts a case study of the history of disease that reflects on a variety of issues in the history of medicine: the use of ideas about contagion to demarcate racial and sexual difference at sites around the British Empire; the contrast between persistently holistic ideas about disease causation in the Black Atlantic

Ramon Emeterio Betances (1827-1898) stands out as a pivotal figure in the fields of ophthalmology and public health in nineteenth-century Puerto Rico. Trained in France, he returned to the island in 1856, where he treated cholera patients and introduced vital public health interventions. Known as 'The Physician of the Poor', Betances dedicated himself to serving marginalised populations, including enslaved individuals. He co-founded a secret abolitionist society and championed Puerto Rican independence, actions that resulted in multiple periods of exile. Together with his contemporaries, Betan

Women with lived experience of strip searching have been calling for it to be banned as a practice for decades; however, it remains a routine practice in carceral settings such as prisons and jails. Given the mass incarceration of Indigenous women and disproportionate rate of Black women in federal prisons in Canada, an anti-racist and gendered anticolonial analysis of strip searching is warranted. Thus, this paper shares findings from conversations with 23 previously incarcerated women, the majority of whom are Black and Indigenous, about their experiences of being strip searched in prisons.

In 1882, William Osler wrote "Professional Notes among the Indian Tribes about Great Slave Lake, NWT," a fantastical essay that purportedly described the sexual and obstetric customs of Indigenous peoples residing in the Canadian Northwest. Originally prepared as a prank, "Professional Notes," along with Osler's alter ego Egerton Yorrick Davis, became an elaborate inside joke that circulated widely among the medical elite for decades after Osler's death. In this essay, I trace the history and afterlife of "Professional Notes," considering both the colonial context of its creation as well as th

INTRODUCTION: Modern slavery and human trafficking (MS-HT) are urgent and increasing global issues that violate human rights and have long-lasting consequences for those affected. The impact on individuals' health is well-documented, and MS-HT are recognised as critical public health issues, reflecting the extensive physical, psychological and social harms they produce, as well as the essential role of health systems in prevention, identification and response. Despite this, the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) impacts of exploitation in these contexts remain insufficiently addressed and un

Racism in the United States has constituted transgenerational legacies of trauma for people of African descent. Scholars have highlighted the immense emotional and psychological consequences of race-based traumatic stress; yet a complete understanding of the impact of historical trauma for African Americans is hampered by the lack of instrumentation for use in quantitative methodologies. We thus sought to develop psychometrically sound instruments to better understand impacts derived from the injury of enslavement and ongoing racial traumas and the resulting emotional impacts of historical los

BACKGROUND: With an increasing prevalence of osteoporosis, physicians have to optimize treatment of relevant vertebral compression fractures, which have significant impact on the quality of life in the elder population. Retrospective clinical studies suggest that kyphoplasty, despite being a procedure with promising potential, may be related to an increased fracture risk of the adjacent untreated vertebrae.
METHODS: A bio-realistic model of a lumbar spine is introduced to determine the morbidity of cemented augmentation. The model was verified and validated for the purpose of the study and su

This archival investigation of the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal (SMSJ) focuses on the construction of the American Ob/Gyn profession's medical knowledge system alongside chattel slavery, between 1834 and 1860. I find that language, methods of clinical management of bodies and decision-making processes illustrate the pathways that obstetrical knowledge served as a determinant of death for Black women under chattel slavery. These are byproducts of the condition of possibility, my theoretical framework. The condition, or use of gendered anti-Black logic/practice, specifically the social

In 1819, a puzzling outbreak of infectious blindness afflicted nearly all crew members and African slaves aboard the French vessel Le Rôdeur during the transatlantic slave trade. This paper investigates the etiology of this unique event, comparing different pathogens that cause blindness: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Onchocerca volvulus; endemic in the African Continent. Reviewing naval medicine since the seventeenth century and eye infection knowledge in 1800, alongside historical records, we explore the singular case of Le Rôdeur's outbreak. While some clinical features
