Characterization and role of polysaccharides in root extracellular trap structuring in two Fabaceae species.

The root extracellular trap (RET) is a network formed by root-associated, cap-derived cells (AC-DCs) and their mucilaginous secretions. The RET is located at the root tip where it establishes a protective interface against abiotic and biotic stresses. The RET mucilage is mainly composed of complex cell wall polysaccharides (including pectin and xyloglucan) and glycoproteins, that are entangled to each other within the network. Despite our knowledge of the composition of RET mucilage, the structural organization of the RET remains poorly understood. Here, we have investigated the role of pectin

Detached Glycine max (Fabales: Fabaceae) leaves influence the demography of Aulacorthum solani (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

The foxglove aphid, Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach), is a major economic pest in Asian soybean fields. Previous studies on its life parameters often used detached soybean leaves, which may not accurately reflect development and reproduction due to disrupted nutrient flow. This study compared survival, development, and reproduction of A. solani on living versus detached leaves at 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34 °C. Between 19 and 28 °C, aphids developed and reproduced successfully on both leaf types. At 31 °C, nymphs failed to mature on detached leaves but reached adulthood on living leaves, though

Ex vivo and in vitro antiplasmodial activity and toxicity of Caesalpinia decapetala (Roth) Alston (Fabaceae).

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Malaria is among the most prevalent and devastating parasitic diseases globally with most cases reported in Sub-Saharan Africa. One of the major reasons for the high malaria prevalence is the ever-increasing emergence of resistant strains of malaria-causing parasites to the currently used antimalarial drugs. This, therefore, calls for the search for antimalarial compounds with alternative modes of action. Plants used in traditional medicine for the treatment of malaria offer possible sources of such compounds. Caesalpinia decapetala has been used traditionally f

Onchocerciasis is a major public health problem caused by Onchocerca volvulus parasite and transmitted to humans via black flies (simulium) bites. The control of onchocerciasis relies much on the use of the chemical drug ivermectin, which is only effective against microfilariae and has led to drug resistance. This study was carried out to assess the in vitro antifilarial activity of methanolic extract of Indigofera tinctoria and its most active fractions on adult male O. ochengi worm, the closest model to O. volvulus, after 48 h and 72 h of treatment. Worms' viability was determined biochemica

Efficacy of a cry1Ab Gene for Control of Maruca vitrata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in Cowpea (Fabales: Fabaceae).

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp.] is an important staple legume in the diet of many households in sub-Saharan Africa. Its production, however, is negatively impacted by many insect pests including bean pod borer, Maruca vitrata F., which can cause 20-80% yield loss. Several genetically engineered cowpea events that contain a cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for resistance against M. vitrata were evaluated in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Ghana (West Africa), where cowpea is commonly grown. As part of the regulatory safety package, these efficacy data were developed and evaluated by

Antimicrobial and structural insights of a new snakin-like peptide isolated from Peltophorum dubium (Fabaceae).

Snakins are antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) found, so far, exclusively in plants, and known to be important in the defense against a wide range of pathogens. Like other plant AMPs, they contain several positively charged amino acids, and an even number of cysteine residues forming disulfide bridges which are considered important for their usual function. Despite its importance, studies on snakin tertiary structure and mode of action are still scarce. In this study, a new snakin-like gene was isolated from the native plant Peltophorum dubium, and its expression was verified in seedlings and adult
