Pilot Clinical Instructor Intervention Raises Potential Clinical Faculty Confidence.

Lack of self-confidence in clinical teaching roles may discourage potential nurse faculty. Academic-clinical partners studied practicing nurses' responses to an intervention regarding teaching confidence and intent. Researchers used a one-group nonrandom pretest/posttest design with two subscales of the Clinical Nurse Educator Skill Acquisition Assessment tool and open-ended questions. Confidence increased with self-rated d = -1.08 (95% confidence interval [CI], -1.60, 0.54), and CNESSA at d = -1.47 (95% CI, -2.07, -0.85) and d = -2.01 (95% CI, -2.74, -1.27), respectively. Beyond Disciplines: The Faculty Identity Challenge in Interprofessional Education.

Interprofessional education (IPE) often fails to bridge the gap between student transformation and faculty disciplinary silos. This article examines the paradox of educators teaching collaboration while maintaining rigid professional identities. Faculty members traditionally derive authority from disciplinary expertise, which can unintentionally reinforce educational fragmentation. True interprofessional transformation requires a shift from transmitting specialized knowledge to facilitating collective learning. We propose that faculty development must move beyond activity-based training to sup

Eight ways to support faculty with Entrustable Professional Activities.

Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) is pushing the medical profession to be more accountable in our standards of assessment. This has led us to focus our efforts at the top of Miller's pyramid, where we aim to see what the trainee 'does' in the clinical environment. In Canadian Royal College specialty training, this has come in the form of workplace-based supervision of trainees performing Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). This is unfamiliar territory for many residents and faculty, and implementation of an additional assessment process into already busy clinical practice has b

New Nursing Faculty and Incivility: Applying Mindfulness-Based Strategies.

Workplace incivility remains a problem within the nursing profession. As nurse leaders, we must recognize and not ignore the complexity of cultures that have adapted incivility into the work environment. Nursing education is a discipline that requires collaborative team work, independent drive, and commitment. New nursing faculty experiencing incivility can use mindfulness-based meditation approaches to cope with uncivil behaviors experienced within the workplace. Nurse educators applying the concepts of mindfulness can learn how to provide themselves self-care by reducing stress, as enhanced

Faculty perception of team-based learning over multiple semesters.

INTRODUCTION: Perspectives from faculty regarding team-based learning (TBL) are not well understood. Previous studies describe faculty preference for TBL due to increased student interaction despite requiring increased time for design. The perception of changes in faculty workload over multiple semesters has not been measured. This research evaluates faculty workload and perceived student engagement after implementing TBL in a required non-prescription medication course over multiple semesters. METHODS: TBL was implemented in the non-prescription medication course and continued for three cons

Contraceptive counseling by general internal medicine faculty and residents.

BACKGROUND: Almost half of US pregnancies are unintended, resulting in many abortions and unwanted or mistimed births. Contraceptive counseling is an effective tool to increase patients' use of contraception. METHODS: Using an online 20-item questionnaire, we evaluated the frequency of contraceptive counseling provided to reproductive-age women during a prevention-focused visit by University of Colorado internal medicine resident and faculty providers. We also evaluated factors hypothesized to affect contraceptive counseling frequency. RESULTS: Although more than 95% of the 146 medicine facu

Collective verbal feedback as a strategy to elicit faculty feedback.

BACKGROUND: "Upward Feedback," or feedback provided by trainees to their supervising faculty, is an important facet of faculty growth and development. However, educators report difficulty obtaining high-quality feedback from trainees through traditional feedback methods. "Collective feedback," elicited verbally from small groups of trainees, may hold promise to overcome this challenge. OBJECTIVES: We implemented collective feedback in a large Internal Medicine residency program to generate feedback for a group of core faculty educators and evaluated resident and faculty preceptions of this me

Variability and Innovation in Faculty Development Models in Emergency Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Ongoing faculty development is essential in academic emergency medicine (EM) to ensure physicians remain clinically competent, educationally effective, and aligned with evolving healthcare demands. Despite this necessity, approaches to faculty development vary widely in structure, participation expectations, and underlying educational philosophy. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the spectrum of faculty development models, including voluntary participation, asynchronous learning, and institutional mandates, examining how each aligns with learning theory and motivational frameworks s

Evolution of a Training Program for Pediatric Faculty and Trainee Wellbeing.

OBJECTIVES: High rates of distress and burnout continue to plague physicians. The Sustaining and Training for Resilience, Engagement and Meaning (STREAM) curriculum is a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded program, developed by experts in faculty and trainee wellbeing from 7 academic institutions, to help address this ongoing and pervasive issue. METHODS: We used Kern's 6-step model to develop the STREAM program. STREAM content was developed and iteratively revised to highlight evidence-informed methods to improve wellbeing. STREAM content is grounded in the PERMA-H fra

Smoking Status of Faculty and Their Tobacco Cessation Counselling Advisory.

INTRODUCTION: Health professionals' own beliefs and practices, especially their smoking status, has been described to strongly influence their willingness to provide brief tobacco interventions (5 A's) to their patients. This study examines the association between the smoking status of faculty members in US dental programmes and (1) practice pattern; (2) perceived confidence; and (3) perceived educational preparedness of new graduates in providing the 5 A's to their patients. METHODS: This study presents data from the National Tobacco Survey of Personnel in Dental and Allied Academic Programs

The impact of male infertility faculty on urology residency training.

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of having male infertility on urology residents' infertility training experience, surgical confidence, and In-Service-Exam Infertility/Sexual Medicine subscores. We electronically surveyed urology residents throughout the United States querying exposure to infertility faculty and fertility knowledge. Univariable and multivariable analysis was performed to determine predictors of higher In-Service Exam Infertility/Sexual Medicine sub-scores and self-rated infertility competency. Fifty-four of 72 respondents (75%) reported that male inferti

Evaluation of an Interprofessional Student-Faculty Collaborative Clinic in a Jail.

Jail-based student-run clinics, though uncommon, have the potential to impact the future health workforce. We evaluated, via a survey of student attitudes and a collection of lessons learned, a student-faculty collaborative clinic that was implemented in a jail in 2015. Clinic participation led to significantly greater student volunteer ratings of the importance of collaborating with oral health providers and of comfort in providing care to incarcerated populations. We report lessons learned regarding logistical considerations, volunteer behavior, and common issues arising in clinic visits. Th

The impact of a faculty training program on inclusive education and disability.

This paper describes the knowledge gained by 20 faculty members following their participation in a training program on inclusive education and disability. The study, which was conducted at an university in Spain, aimed to design, implement and evaluate a program for training faculty members to respond in an inclusive manner to the needs of students with disabilities. An initial, formative and summative qualitative evaluation was carried out and four instruments were used for collecting the data: group and individual interviews, written open-ended questionnaires and observations. The data were

[The ENARM and the schools and faculties of medicine. An analysis that nobody will like].

In Mexico, the career of Doctor of Medicine has been considered as a prerequisite stage to access the specialization. Of course the majority of medical graduates aspire to undertake postgraduate courses in the different institutions that have a university program. The Examen Nacional de Aspirantes a Residencias Médicas (ENARM) (National Evaluation for Medical Residency Applicants) has become for the supporters a gap between the possibility of practicing the profession in a decent way and with a regular remuneration or exercising it in very limited conditions and with low economic income or eve

Diversity and Discrimination in Dentistry: The University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.

This article examines the history of discrimination against women, Jews, Blacks, and Asians at the University of Toronto dental school from 1921 to 2000. The University of Toronto was the largest dental school in Canada. Discrimination could take various forms - the most obvious was a quota. As this article will show, although it was not a quota per se, the University of Toronto dental school discriminated against Jewish students in the admissions process at least until 1954 and possibly thereafter. There appears to have been no discrimination against women in the admission process, although t

Gendered hiring and attrition on the path to parity for academic faculty.

Despite long-running efforts to increase gender diversity among tenured and tenure-track faculty in the U.S., women remain underrepresented in most academic fields, sometimes dramatically so. Here, we quantify the relative importance of faculty hiring and faculty attrition for both past and future faculty gender diversity using comprehensive data on the training and employment of 268,769 tenured and tenure-track faculty rostered at 12,112U.S. PhD-granting departments, spanning 111 academic fields between 2011 and 2020. Over this time, we find that hiring had a far greater impact on women's rep
