Predicting Forest Tree Leaf Phenology Under Climate Change Using Satellite Monitoring and Population-Based Genomic Trait Association.

Leaf phenology, a critical determinant of plant fitness and ecosystem function, is undergoing rapid shifts due to global climate change, yet its complex genetic and environmental drivers remain incompletely understood. Understanding the genetic basis of phenological adaptation is crucial for forecasting forest responses to a changing climate. Here, we integrate multi-year satellite-derived phenology from 46 Fagus sylvatica (European beech) populations across Germany with a population-based genome-wide association study to dissect the environmental and genetic drivers of leaf-out day (LOD) and

Interactions between beech and oak seedlings can modify the effects of hotter droughts and the onset of hydraulic failure.

Mixing species with contrasting resource use strategies could reduce forest vulnerability to extreme events. Yet, how species diversity affects seedling hydraulic responses to heat and drought, including mortality risk, is largely unknown. Using open-top chambers, we assessed how, over several years, species interactions (monocultures vs mixtures) modulate heat and drought impacts on the hydraulic traits of juvenile European beech and pubescent oak. Using modeling, we estimated species interaction effects on timing to drought-induced mortality and the underlying mechanisms driving these impact

Growth decline in European beech associated with temperature-driven increase in reproductive allocation.

Climate change is impacting forests in complex ways, with indirect effects arising from interactions between tree growth and reproduction often overlooked. Our 43-y study of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) showed that rising summer temperatures since 2005 have led to more frequent seed production events. This shift increases reproductive effort but depletes the trees' stored resources due to insufficient recovery periods between seed crops. Consequently, annual tree ring increments have declined by 28%, dropping from a stable average of 1.60 mm y-1 between 1980 and 2005 to 1.16 mm y-1 thereaf

European beech spring phenological phase prediction with UAV-derived multispectral indices and machine learning regression.

Acquiring phenological event data is crucial for studying the impacts of climate change on forest dynamics and assessing the risks associated with the early onset of young leaves. Large-scale mapping of forest phenological timing using Earth observation (EO) data could enhance our understanding of these processes through an added spatial component. However, translating traditional ground-based phenological observations into reliable ground truthing for training and validating EO mapping applications remains challenging. This study explored the feasibility of predicting high-resolution phenolog

Plant-herbivore-parasitoid food webs across an edge gradient from natural southern beech to plantation pine forests.

The loss and fragmentation of natural habitats resulting from conversion to production land uses are among the main drivers of biodiversity loss and increase the proportion of habitat edges. These edges drive edge effects, which are ecological and physical changes in response to distance to habitat edges. Habitat edges between natural and production land affect ecological patterns and processes, including the networks of species interactions on either side of the edge. Because food webs depict both the composition of the community and the feeding links, which represent a measure of energy flow

Seasonal dynamics and sun/shade heterogeneity of leaf gas exchange and VOC emissions inside a tall temperate forest canopy.

Leaf gas exchange is the key driver of forest carbon uptake and directly determines forest carbon sink activity. Additionally, plants release a variety of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) acting as stress signals of trees. However, continuous hourly resolved measurements of leaf gas exchange and VOC emissions in tall tree canopies are challenging and remain scarce. To this end, we developed a complex in-situ leaf gas exchange measurement system with 24 cuvettes deployed on mature Fagus sylvatica L. (n = 3) and Pseudotsuga menziesii (MIRBEL) FRANCO (n = 3) individuals in a mixed tempe

Effect of Slope Grain on Mechanical Properties of Different Wood Species.

The aim of the presented study is to determine the relationship between mechanical parameters of selected wood species (Carya sp., Fagus sylvatica L., Acer platanoides L., Fraxinus excelsior L., Ulmus minor Mill.) used for the production of hand tools and drumsticks and the grain deviation angle from the rectilinear pattern. Modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), elastic strain and work to maximum load (WML) in the three-point bending test were determined. The results obtained show that the values of all the mechanical parameters measured for hickory wood are higher than those

Spatio-Temporal Plasticity of Root Exudation in Three Temperate Tree Species: Effects of Season, Site, and Soil Characteristics.

Root exudation provides a constant carbon input to the rhizosphere and is therefore a very important factor in shaping this hotspot of biological activity. Nonetheless, data on root exudation and its spatio-temporal plasticity are scarce. This study provides insights into compound-specific root exudation in three temperate tree species in two seasons (late spring and late summer) and two soil compartments (forest floor and the top mineral soil), including the effect of soil chemistry. At four sites with differing mean annual temperatures and soil phosphorus levels, root exudates were sampled u

Carbohydrate content governs growth-storage allocation during recovery from carbon depletion.

How plants prioritize carbon (C) allocation between growth and storage remains an outstanding question, limiting predictions of forest C cycling and ecosystem resilience following periods of C limitation. To address this gap, we experimentally depleted carbohydrate reserves via low-CO2 conditions and quantified C allocation to reserves and growth during recovery at ambient CO2 in Fagus sylvatica juveniles. Trees with lower carbohydrate reserves following C depletion prioritized C allocation to storage, whereas trees replete with carbohydrates favored growth, demonstrating that internal carbohy

Shade and Drought Shape Stomatal Kinetics in Beech Saplings.

Stomata and photosynthesis respond at different rates to rapid changes in light availability, resulting in different dynamics of water and carbon fluxes. Here, we investigated how growth conditions, drought, and potassium availability affect the dynamics of stomatal conductance and photosynthesis in response to rapid changes of irradiance in beech saplings (Fagus sylvatica L.). Two greenhouse experiments were conducted, one comparing saplings grown under sunlit conditions to those grown in shaded conditions, and the other testing the effects of edaphic drought and potassium supplementation on

Operational TBE incidence forecasts for Austria, Germany, and Switzerland 2019-2021.

In spring 2019, forecasts of the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) for the next 2 years, i.e. 2019 and 2020, were made for the first time. For this purpose, negative binomial regression models with 4-5 predictors were fitted to the time series of annual human TBE incidences from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The most important predictor for TBE incidences is the fructification index of the European beech (Fagus sylvatica) 2 years prior as a proxi for the intensity of the TBE virus transmission cycle. These forecasts were repeated in spring 2020 after the updated predictors and th

Priority effects during fungal community establishment in beech wood.

Assembly history of fungal communities has a crucial role in the decomposition of woody resources, and hence nutrient cycling and ecosystem function. However, it has not been clearly determined whether the fungal species that arrive first may, potentially, dictate the subsequent pathway of community development, that is, whether there is a priority effect at the species level. We used traditional culture-based techniques coupled with sequencing of amplified genetic markers to profile the fungal communities in beech (Fagus sylvatica) disks that had been pre-colonised separately with nine specie

The impact of winter and spring temperatures on temperate tree budburst dates: results from an experimental climate manipulation.

Budburst phenology is a key driver of ecosystem structure and functioning, and it is sensitive to global change. Both cold winter temperatures (chilling) and spring warming (forcing) are important for budburst. Future climate warming is expected to have a contrasting effect on chilling and forcing, and subsequently to have a non-linear effect on budburst timing. To clarify the different effects of warming during chilling and forcing phases of budburst phenology in deciduous trees, (i) we conducted a temperature manipulation experiment, with separate winter and spring warming treatments on well

Interfacial Adhesion and Mechanical Properties of Wood-Polymer Hybrid Composites Prepared by Injection Molding.

Birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) solid wood and plywood were overmolded with polyamide 6 (PA 6) and polypropylene (PP) to investigate their mechanical properties and interfacial adhesion. In the case of PA 6, maximum tensile shear strengths values of more than 8 to 9 MPa were obtained for birch and beech, respectively. The values are comparable to bond strengths of commercial joints bonded with formaldehyde-containing amino-plastics. Perpendicular to the wood elements, bond strength values of 3 MPa was achieved for PA 6. The penetration of the polymers into the wood

Color Stability and Photo-Degradation of Steamed Beech Wood with False Heartwood Under UV Exposure.

This work analyses the influence of hydrothermal treatment (steaming) on the color stability and photochemical degradation of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) with false heartwood under the influence of UV radiation. Samples in the native state and after steaming at temperatures of 105 °C (Mode I) and 120 °C (Mode II) were exposed to simulated aging in a Xenotest device for 360 h. Color changes were assessed in the color space CIE L*a*b* and surface chemical changes using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed that unsteamed wood darkens significantly under the influence of UV radiation (ΔL*

Forest under stress: responses and recovery of water relations across scales during the compound drought in summer 2022.

The summer of 2022 was characterized by compound soil and atmospheric drought (CSAD; low soil water content, SWC, and high vapor pressure deficit, VPD) in Central Europe, threatening forest carbon sequestration and water balance, yet linked ecosystem- and tree-level hydraulic responses remain poorly resolved. We assessed the response and recovery of water relations of a beech-dominated montane mixed deciduous forest in Switzerland (CH-Lae) to the 2022 CSAD through a series of ecosystem-scale (evapotranspiration, ET; canopy conductance, Gs) as well as tree-scale measurements, including leaf-lev
