OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of 21 sonographic fetal weight-estimation models and abdominal circumference (AC) as a single measure for the prediction of fetal macrosomia (> 4000 g) using either fixed or optimal model-specific thresholds.
METHODS: A total of 4765 sonographic weight estimations performed within 3 days prior to delivery were analyzed. The predictive accuracy of 21 published sonographic fetal weight-estimation models was calculated using three different thresholds: a fixed threshold of 4000 g; a model-specific threshold obtained from the inflexion point of the receiver-oper

OBJECTIVE: To establish a reference chart for estimated fetal weight (EFW) using the Hadlock formula based on recent biometric data (2012-2013).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective multicentric longitudinal study was carried out. Biometric parameters as the head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and the femur length were measured in multiple areas of France from January 2012 until December 2013. EFW was calculated using the predictive formula of Hadlock using three parameters. The accurate gestational age was the main inclusion criteria calculated in weeks of gestation (WG). A

PURPOSE: To establish a correlation between testicular position and fetal weight, in order to provide an additional prenatal parameter for fetal weight estimation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 288 testes from 144 human fetuses. The fetuses were assessed as regards weight, total length, crown-rump length and foot length. Fetal age was calculated according to the foot length criteria. The position of the testis was classified as abdominal, inguinal or scrotal.
RESULTS: One hundred and ninety seven testes (68.4%) were abdominal, 43 (14.9%) were inguinal and 48 (16.6%) were scrotal. In the

The correlation between placental thickness, gestational age and fetal weight across different stages of pregnancy is of interest. Hence, 187 women (11-40 weeks gestation) at Maa Vindhyavasini Autonomous State Medical College and SMMH Medical College in India participated in this study. Results showed that mean placental thickness increased with gestational age (2.083 cm at 11-20 weeks, 2.623 cm at 20-30 weeks and 3.29 cm at 30-40 weeks), while fetal weight also increased (172.05g, 746.67g and 2584.49g, respectively). A strong positive correlation was found between gestational age and both fet

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine if customized fetal growth charts developed excluding obese and underweight mothers (CC(18.5-25)) are better than customized curves (CC) at identifying pregnancies at risk of perinatal morbidity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 20,331 infants were used to construct CC and from 11,604 for CC(18.5-25), after excluding the cases with abnormal maternal BMI. The 2 models were applied to 27,507 newborns and the perinatal outcomes were compared between large for gestational age (LGA) or small for gestational age (SGA) according to each model. Logistic

Fetal growth restriction is a strong risk factor for perinatal morbidity and mortality. Reliable standards are indispensable, both to assess fetal growth and to evaluate birthweight and early postnatal growth in infants born preterm. The aim of this study was to create updated Swedish reference ranges for estimated fetal weight (EFW) from gestational week 12-42. This prospective longitudinal multicentre study included 583 women without known conditions causing aberrant fetal growth. Each woman was assigned a randomly selected protocol of five ultrasound scans from gestational week 12 + 3 to 41

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Excessive gestational weight gain is related to many complications (both maternal and fetal), such as macrosomia. The most common complications in macrosomic fetuses include: increased risk of intrauterine death, need for intensive care, fractures, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, paralysis of the brachial plexus and obesity in childhood and adulthood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between gestational and fetal weight gain and the incidence of macrosomia in two maternity hospitals.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Cohort study in two public maternity hospitals in

PURPOSE: Birth weight is an important predictive parameter for neonatal morbidity and mortality, and accurate estimation of fetal weight is therefore a valuable tool for determining the further obstetric management. Many sonographic weight formulas have been introduced. Most of these widely accepted formulas were derived from non-linear regression analysis. Only few formulas have been constructed using other methods, such as the physically based volumetric method based on routine two-dimensional biometric parameters in the fetus. The rationale for calculating fetal weight from volumetric measu

BACKGROUND: Accurate estimation of fetal weight is of paramount importance in the management of labour and delivery.
METHODS: This was a cross sectional study conducted over a period of 6 months in a tertiary care teaching hospital. All singleton term mothers with cephalic presentation and intact membranes with ultrasound examination done within a week were included in the study. IUFD, multiple gestation, malpresentation, diagnosed oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios, pelvic and or abdominal masses, and current weight more than 80 Kgs were excluded from the study. Expected fetal weight was esti

OBJECTIVE: Placental abruption is associated with increased risks of preterm delivery and fetal growth restriction. As abruption is apparently a disease of the placenta, the extent to which abruption impacts the growth and development of the placenta remains poorly understood. We reasoned that a study of fetal growth and placental growth in relation to abruption might provide some clues to understanding the process through which placental abruption impacts fetal growth.
DESIGN: Multicenter, prospective cohort study.
SETTING: USA, 1959-1966.
POPULATION: A total of 38 684 pregnancies resultin

Fetal weight prediction with ultrasonic measurements of biparietal diameter (BPD) and abdominal circumference (AC) using the equation by Shepard et al. [1982] was tested prospectively in 310 fetuses. Fetuses of all weight categories were included. The error of weight prediction was in the range of +684 to -880 g. One SD of prediction error was 242 g or 8.5% of birth weight. An overestimation was seen in a fetus with a birth weight of less than 2,500 g (1 SD = 183 g or 10% of birth weight). An underestimation could be observed in a fetus with a birth weight of more than 4,000 g (1 SD = 259 g or

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that fetal growth restriction is associated with changes in brain structures as a result of chronic hypoxia. However, less is known about the effects of growth restriction on the fetal insula, particularly in less severely affected late-onset growth-restricted fetuses.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) compare sonographic insular measurements between fetal-growth restricted, small-for-gestational-age, and appropriate-for-gestational-age control fetuses; and (2) evaluate the association of sonographic insular measurements with perinatal and neur

Background/Objectives: Systematic quality review of ultrasound exams is recommended to ensure accurate diagnosis. Our primary objectives were to develop a quantitative method for quality review of estimated fetal weight (EFW) and to assess the accuracy of EFW for an entire practice and for individual personnel. A secondary objective was to evaluate the accuracy of fetal sex determination. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Eligible ultrasound exams included singleton pregnancies with live birth and known birth weight (BW). A published method was used to predict BW from EFW for exam

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to estimate the association between second-trimester estimated fetal weight and fetal growth restriction in twin pregnancies.
METHODS: A historical cohort of 306 twin pregnancies from a single center was analyzed. Estimated fetal weight and discordance at 18 to 24 weeks were calculated. Patients with a fetus whose second-trimester estimated fetal weight was below the 10th percentile were compared to patients with both fetuses at or above the 10th percentile. Also, patients with second-trimester discordance of 15% or greater were compared to patients w

A single fetal ultrasonogram was obtained between the 20th and 40th weeks of gestation in 327 pregnancies. Fetal body weight was calculated with standard methods and fetuses were classified as appropriate for gestational age (303 fetuses), large for gestational age (four fetuses), or small for gestational age (20 fetuses). Fetal liver weight was estimated on the basis of longitudinal, anteroposterior, and cephalocaudal liver dimensions multiplied by a constant (k) of 0.42 determined experimentally in a previous study of adult livers. Estimated liver weights in appropriate for gestational age f

The ratio between fetal and placental weight is often thought to be a measure of the reserve capacity of the placenta. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between 1) endocrinologic parameters during pregnancy (serum placental lactogen - HPL, urinary estriol - E3), 2) the occurrence of fetal distress during labor, and 3) the severity of EPH gestosis, and the fetal/placental weight ratio at various gestational ages. The data from a total of 4911 consecutive pregnancies and deliveries were evaluated. Up to 37 weeks the mean fetal/placental weight ratio was significantly lower
