We investigated diverse groups of fish species to determine whether the fluorine (F) contents of the dental hard tissues were related to baseline serum F levels. Serum samples, enameloid, dentin, ganoid/enamel, and bone were analyzed for F by either electron microprobe or wet chemistry. Species were categorized into two groups based on the F content of the enameloid. One group contained greater than 2.6 wt% F in enameloid, whereas the other group had less than 0.45 wt% F in enameloid. The dentin and bone from all species (or, in skates, the cartilage), as well as the ganoid/enamel layer of a H

The rational design of bioactive molecules increasingly utilizes sulfur-containing groups such as sulfoximines and sulfilimines. While sulfonimidoyl fluorides have emerged as versatile chiral S(vi) electrophiles enabling efficient asymmetric synthesis of sulfoximines, their S(iv) counterparts, sulfilimidoyl fluorides, have remained inaccessible in asymmetric catalysis due to their intrinsic instability and configurational lability. Central to this strategy is a bifunctional tertiary amine-hydrogen-bond donor catalyst that enables selective conversion of a transient sulfur(iv) intermediate. Mec

A convenient and practical approach for glycosyl chloride synthesis has been developed using benzene-1,3-disulfonyl chloride as a mild and efficient chlorinating reagent. Employing this method, we successfully synthesized a wide range of glycosyl chlorides, including both armed and disarmed mono- and disaccharides. The protocol was further extended to a one-pot synthesis of glycosyl fluorides via in-situ generation of glycosyl chlorides intermediate using AgBF4 as a fluoride source. This versatile synthetic strategy offers straightforward access to a wide range of O- and N-glycosides in good t

A copper-free Sandmeyer-type fluorosulfonylation reaction is reported. Utilizing Na2S2O5 and Selectfluor as the sulfur dioxide and fluorine sources, respectively, aryldiazonium salts were transformed into sulfonyl fluorides. The one-pot direct synthesis of sulfonyl fluorides from aromatic amines was also realized via in situ diazotization. The practicality of this method was demonstrated by the broad functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, and late-stage fluorosulfonylation of natural products and pharmaceuticals.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to examine the etching effect of acidic fluoride solutions on enamel.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 24 human teeth divided into 48 enamel-specimens were partly isolated with impression material. Specimens were exposed for 10 min to 20ml of the following solutions: 1.6% TiF4, 3.9% SnF2, 0.2% HF and 1.8% citric acid (CA). The isolation was removed and 24 specimens analysed by profilometry (Δheight: exposed/isolated enamel surfaces, surface roughness parameters). For the remaining 24 specimens [Ca(2+)] in the test solutions was analysed by atomic absorption spectros

CONTEXT: The reaction between Na and HF is a typical harpooning reaction which is of great interest due to its significance in understanding the elementary chemical reaction kinetics. This work aims to investigate the detailed reaction mechanisms of sodium with hydrogen fluoride and the adsorption of HF on the resultant NaF as well as the (NaF)4 tetramer. The results suggest that the reaction between Na and HF leads to the formation of sodium fluoride salt NaF and hydrogen gas. Na interacts with HF to form a complex HF···Na, and then the approaching of F atom of HF to Na results in a transitio

Recent evidence has suggested that the cariostatic effects of topical fluoride (F) are related to the presence of low concentrations of ionic F in the oral environment. The purpose of this study was to compare the retention of F in the oral environment over 24-hour periods after the use of a F dentifrice or a F rinse. Groups of ten consenting adult subjects (age 18-52 years) brushed and/or rinsed (B/R) in a standardized manner twice per day in the morning (AM) and before bed (PM) with either a placebo dentifrice (8 ppm F), NaF dentifrice (1100 ppm F), or NaF rinse (225 ppm F). To evaluate the inhibition of the activity of salivary matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) (MMP-2 and MMP-9) by solutions of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4), zinc fluoride (ZnF2), stannous fluoride (SnF2), and sodium fluoride (NaF). Saliva was collected from eight healthy individuals. Pooled saliva was centrifuged; the supernatants were incubated for 2 h (26°C) and subjected to gelatin zymography. TiF4, ZnF2, SnF2, and NaF, were added into the incubation buffer in clinically relevant concentrations (0.01-2 wt%). The electrophoretic bands were scanned, and the transmittance values were analyzed with

The DFT calculations utilizing the FP-LAPW approach were conducted for a detailed study of structural, electronic, optical, elastic, and thermoelectric properties of cubic K2TiHgF6 and Na2TiHgF6 Heusler fluorides. It was found that both materials have a cubic crystal structure of type Fm3̄m and display negative values of formation and cohesion energy, which indicates good thermodynamic stability, with the elastic parameters being consistent with the Born stability criteria. Calculations within the framework of the TB-mBJ approach reveal semiconductor nature, the band gap value for which amount

The effectiveness of fluoride in caries prevention has been convincingly proven. In recent years, researchers have investigated the preventive effects of different fluoride formulations on erosive tooth wear with positive results, but their action on caries and erosion prevention must be based on different requirements, because there is no sheltered area in the erosive process as there is in the subsurface carious lesions. Thus, any protective mechanism from fluoride concerning erosion is limited to the surface or the near surface layer of enamel. However, reports on other protective agents sh

This study was undertaken to determine whether the suspected periodontopathogens Bacteroides melaninogenicus ss melaninogenicus and intermedius and Bacteroides asaccharolyticus are killed by clinically used topical fluorides. The viability of each organism was examined after exposure to three fluoride compounds, stannous (SnF2), acidulated phosphate (APF), and neutral sodium (NaF), for 1 and 8 h. Stannous fluoride was found to be effective at lowest fluoride concentrations with APF next in effectiveness. NaF required the highest concentrations of fluoride to kill test organisms. The observations of interest made in this investigation may be summarized as follows: 1. Conventional fluoride application by mouthrinsing with neutral NaF solution (0.025% daily for three weeks or three months; or 0.05% solution daily; or 0.2% solution weekly for three weeks) is found to result in only moderate and insignificant uptake of F in facial enamel surfaces. The gain is in the order of a hundred ppm within 10 to 15 microns' depth (as determined by an acid etching technique) and a few hundred ppm at 0.02 to 0.05 microns (according to pilot ion probe analysis). 2. Painting, at one week

OBJECTIVES: Although patterns of fluid intake change seasonally, little is known about how fluoride intake varies by season. Since even short-term increases in fluoride intake could potentially lead to more dental fluorosis, it is valuable to assess the degree of seasonal variation to determine if it increases fluoride intake to levels that could be considered a concern in young children.
METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed periodically to participants in the Iowa Fluoride Study beginning at 6 weeks of age and continuing for a number of years. Parents recorded the date; child's weight; estima

The purpose of this study was to measure the prevalence and distribution of root caries in two New Mexico communities. One community, Deming, had a natural fluoride concentration of 0.7 mg/L in its drinking water, optimum for its climate. The other, Lordsburg, was naturally fluoridated at 3.5 mg/L, five times the optimum. Dental examinations were carried out on 151 adults in Deming (mean age, 39.8 years) and 164 in Lordsburg (mean age, 43.2 years); only persons born in the communities were included. Prevalence of root caries was 23.8% in Deming and 7.3% in Lordsburg; mean number of lesions was

The study aimed to examine the fluoride (F) release potential of arginine (Arg)-incorporated F varnishes. Four commercially available F varnishes were included in the study: Duraphat® (5% NaF), Flúor Protector® (0.9% SiH2F2), Fluor Protector S® (NH4F), and Fluorimax™ (2.5% NaF). L-arginine (2% w/v.) was incorporated in these varnishes to estimate F release at 1 h, 4 h, 6 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days using an F-ion selective electrode. The media pH of eluded varnishes was estimated and primary inorganic F extraction was performed. The main effects pH, F release, and computed integrated mean/cumu

Sulfur fluoride exchange (SuFEx) click chemistry is a powerful tool for constructing functional molecules. However, catalytic asymmetric methods for constructing chiral sulfur(VI)-centred sulfonimidoyl fluorides are rare, resulting in the limited application of SuFEx. Owing to the crowded three-dimensional environment, chiral sulfonimidoyl transfer is challenging. Here we show a catalytic enantioselective Cl-F exchange reaction to realize the asymmetric sulfonimidoyl transfer reaction with racemic sulfonimidoyl chlorides as reactants, constructing chiral SuFEx connecting arms. This strategy en

Fluoride is the main agent used to control dental caries, with a very successful history after its widespread implementation worldwide, resulting in significant caries declines around the globe. In this chapter, the mechanism of action and peculiarities of different methods of fluoride use are revised. Fluoride controls caries progression by interfering with the processes of mineral exchanges (demineralization, remineralization) to which teeth are frequently subjected upon exposure to dental biofilm and a diet rich in fermentable sugars. Because caries is a ubiquitous disease of modern societi

A series of low-molecular-weight, compact, and multifunctional cyclic alkenylsulfonyl fluorides were efficiently prepared from the corresponding alkenyl triflates. Palladium-catalyzed sulfur dioxide insertion using the surrogate reagent DABSO effects sulfinate formation, before trapping with an F electrophile delivers the sulfonyl fluorides. A broad range of functional groups are tolerated, and a correspondingly large collection of derivatization reactions are possible on the products, including substitution at sulfur, conjugate addition, and N-functionalization. Together, these attributes sug

The phosphoryl group, PO3-, is the dynamic structural unit in the biological chemistry of phosphorus. Its transfer from a donor to an acceptor atom, with oxygen much more prevalent than nitrogen, carbon, or sulfur, is at the core of a great majority of enzyme-catalyzed reactions involving phosphate esters, anhydrides, amidates, and phosphorothioates. The serendipitous discovery that the phosphoryl group could be labeled by "nuclear mutation," by substitution of PO3- by MgF3- or AlF4-, has underpinned the application of metal fluoride (MF x ) complexes to mimic transition states for enzymatic p
