Although research about the unintended consequences of paternal incarceration for family well-being has grown in recent years, there has been minimal exploration of food insecurity. Using qualitative methods, we aimed to understand the relationships between paternal incarceration and family food insecurity in Canada. An ethnographic study (24 months) was conducted that included naturalistic observation and in-depth interviews with formerly incarcerated fathers, their partners, and societal reintegration-focused stakeholders (n = 63). Interpretive thematic analysis based on family impact and in

Food insecurity and declining availability of freshwater and new productive land in water-scarce areas and countries necessitate effective use of marginal-quality waters and underperforming soils. High‑magnesium waters and soils are emerging examples of water quality deterioration and land degradation leading to environmental and food security constraints in several irrigation schemes. A ratio of magnesium-to-calcium > 1 in irrigation waters and an exchangeable magnesium percentage > 25% in soils are considered high enough to result in soil degradation and impact crop yields negatively. These

This study aims to describe the food security situation among Teréna families in the villages of Agua Azul, Olho D'Agua, and Oliveiras in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale was adapted to 15 questions that reflect food insecurity at different levels of intensity. A survey was conducted in the villages with 49 families that had under-five children. Information was obtained on income, family size, maternal education, and children's food intake. 75.5% of families showed some level of food insecurity (22.4% low, 32.7% moderate, and 20.4% high). A large percentage

The rhizosphere is a dynamic interface among plant roots, soil, and microbiota, where the resident microbial community shapes plant health, ecosystem resistance and resilience, nutrient cycling, and sustainable crop production. Yet the limited efficacy of conventional microbial inoculants under field conditions - reflecting poor persistence of introduced microorganisms, incomplete mechanistic understanding of plant-microbiome signalling, and high context-dependence across soils and climates - has created a need for predictive, rather than empirical, microbiome engineering. To close this gap, w

Food and nutrition insecurity disproportionately impact low-income households in the United States, contributing to higher rates of chronic diseases among this population. Addressing this challenge is complex because of various factors affecting the availability and accessibility of nutritious food. Short value chain (SVC) models, informally known as local food systems, offer a systemic approach that aims to optimize resources and align values throughout and beyond the food supply chain. Although specific SVC interventions, such as farmers markets, have been studied individually, a comprehensi

Animal pathogens attract attention in both the livestock and public health sectors for their impacts on socio-economics, food safety and security, and human health. These impacts are felt at the household, national, regional and global levels. Whereas the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has identified 118 animal diseases as notifiable, based on their potential for impact on trade, there is a selected subset that have been classified as posing a greater threat to countries due to unique characteristics, such as being highly transmissible, spreading rapidly within and between countrie

A dual relationship between food insecurity and inadequate food literacy among college students may be attributed to limited food literacy, availability and ability to prepare healthful foods. Experiences that increase food literacy can improve diet quality and reduce food insecurity. Research was conducted through a food literacy-based curriculum developed using Social Cognitive Theory and Experiential Learning Theory. Food literacy outcomes and food security level were measured pre- and post-term through a Qualtrics-based survey. Analyses included Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and McNemar test.

BACKGROUND: Under the combined pressures of frequent extreme climate events and the spread of unilateral trade policies, global agricultural industry and supply chains are facing an unprecedented crisis. Digital technology (DT) is a key driver of the new technological revolution and is profoundly reshaping food production, distribution, and consumption. However, its comprehensive impact on food security and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
METHODS: This study systematically elaborates the theoretical logic through which digital technology enhances food security. Using panel data from

Food security indices are widely used to support decision making and provide a structured assessment of countries' capacities to withstand global environmental and economic crises. However, these indices have inherent limitations, including potential biases in ranking and a lack of structural insights into food system dynamics. This study presents a systematic approach that combines elastic-net regression-based feature selection and two-step clustering to address some of these limitations and equip decision makers with structured procedures for making informed decisions and supporting food sys

In this paper, survey evidence is used to examine the food security impacts of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. We focus on both residents of Ukraine and those fleeing to one of the wealthiest countries in Europe, Switzerland. Our questionnaire was sent to both Ukrainian residents and migrants to Switzerland between October 2022 and February 2023. 80% of respondents (n = 1267) indicated that they faced some form of food insecurity, most commonly an inability to eat balanced meals and/or running out of food without being able to buy more. Yet the incidence of more severe forms of food inse

BACKGROUND: Limited research on food systems and food insecurity (FI) following disasters finds contextual differences in post-disaster food systems that shape dimensions of FI. Measurement limitations make it difficult to address FI and develop effective practices for disaster-affected communities.
OBJECTIVE: To develop, validate, and test a Disaster Food Security Framework (DFSF).
DESIGN: Mixed-methods approach was used, including in-depth interviews to understand lived experiences during disasters; expert panel input to validate DFSF designed using responses from in-depth interviews; and

Primary Health Care has great potential to intensify Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) actions. Municipal Health Plans (PMS) define actions to be developed and establish an intersectoral agenda for promoting FNS according to the characteristics and demands of the population. This study aims to describe the epidemiological profile characterized in the PMS of municipalities in a predominantly rural region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and to identify the intentionality of actions to promote FNS in health planning. This is a descriptive documentary study, originating from the analysis of

BACKGROUND: Climate change, rice viruses, and viruses vector pests are major threats of global rice production. The future climate could create more suitable habitats for insect vectors that transmit rice viruses. Here we leveraged large-scale data to examine present and future (2041-2060) suitable habitats of six rice viruses that were transmitted by 10 insect vectors. We associated these habitat predictions with rice cultivation areas to assess potential climate change impacts on rice productions.
RESULTS: Under the future climate, the suitable habitats of rice virus vector pests are expect

The agricultural production system is facing unprecedented pressure of climate change, human population, pressure on renewable and non-renewable resources, and elevation in both biotic and abiotic stress factors. The recent development in nucleic acid based technologies have transformed research in plant sciences through deployment of powerful technologies for understanding complex biological mechanisms controlling climate resilience, nutrition and yield attributes in agriculturally important crops. This editorial documented the key results of 33 articles published in this special issue, cover

IMPORTANCE: Water, energy, and food (WEF) insecurities are widespread in South Africa and are associated with adverse health outcomes. However, research has typically examined these insecurities separately, resulting in limited understanding of their interconnected associations with health and the pathways through which they may influence health outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a conceptual framework describing the associations between WEF insecurities and health outcomes in South Africa by synthesizing existing evidence on the pathways through which WEF insecurities may influence health.

Food security is increasingly threatened by climate shocks, market volatility, and geopolitical disruptions. A resilient agricultural industry chain is critical to ensuring a stable food supply, yet empirical evidence on how firm-level digital technology innovation enhances such resilience remains scarce. Using micro-level data from Chinese agricultural firms over the period 2010-2025, which comprise 69 listed agricultural firms with 714 firm-year unbalanced panel observations, this study examines the impact of digital technology innovation on agricultural industry chain resilience. The result

The older adult population in Thailand has been steadily increasing in recent years, and urbanization has resulted in many older adults living independently, leaving many at nutritional risk. The purpose of this research is to explore food security among Thai older adults using a simple screening tool, the DETERMINE tool, as well as from three surveys which reflect seniors' health and ultimately food security including the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), the self-efficacy for physical activity scale (SEPAS), and the health literacy questionnaire. The DETERMINE tool was used in Thailand f

Food security is based on a variety of factors, including how well agricultural production is doing, how much food we import, how many people are employed in the food industry, what public policies are put in place to improve food production strategy and food security of the household. Food is important for human beings so that everyone can have enough of it. A lack of food in the long term can lead to people becoming hungry and starving, which can be dangerous. There are many ways to boost food production and improve self-sufficiency and food security. One way is to develop small-scale irriga

Hunting and consumption of wild animals, colloquially known as "bushmeat," is associated with health trade-offs. Contact with wildlife increases exposure to wildlife-origin zoonotic diseases yet bushmeat is an important nutritional resource in many rural communities. In this study, we test the hypothesis that bushmeat improves food security in communities that hunt and trade bushmeat regularly. We conducted 478 interviews with men and women in six communities near Cross River National Park in Nigeria. We used interview responses to relate prevalence and diversity of bushmeat consumption to hou
