Vaccine usage in western Canadian cow-calf herds.

The aims of this study were to describe when and how vaccines are administered during the production cycle in cow-calf herds in western Canada, as well as the factors that influence vaccine usage as reported by producers. The most commonly used vaccines were bovine viral diarrhea virus/infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (BVDV/IBR) in adult animals and clostridial vaccines in calves. While there has been improvement in usage of reproductive and respiratory viral vaccines since previous studies, there are still several areas in which uptake could be improved. Only 72% of herd owners vaccinated th

Fusobacterial infections: an underestimated threat.

The involvement of fusobacteria in a wide range of human and animal infection has long been recognised. Slow-growing anaerobes, often in polymicrobial culture, they are not always identified but are present mainly in the oropharynx, from where they are bloodborne to other sites or aspirated into the lung. Fusobacterium nucleatum is commonly found in periodontal disease and produces tissue irritants such as butyric acid, proteases and cytokines. It has strong adhesive properties due to the presence of lectins, and these outer-membrane proteins mediate adhesion to epithelia and tooth surfaces, a

FcRav2, a gene with a ROGDI domain involved in Fusarium head blight and crown rot on durum wheat caused by Fusarium culmorum.

Fusarium culmorum is a soil-borne fungal pathogen which causes foot and root rot and Fusarium head blight on small-grain cereals, in particular wheat and barley. It causes significant yield and quality losses and results in the contamination of kernels with type B trichothecene mycotoxins. Our knowledge of the pathogenicity factors of this fungus is still limited. A transposon tagging approach based on the mimp1/impala double-component system has allowed us to select a mutant altered in multiple metabolic and morphological processes, trichothecene production and virulence. The flanking regions

Outer membrane vesicles from Fusobacterium necrophorum elicit protective immunity in mice and robust immune responses in sheep.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a major opportunistic pathogen of ruminants that causes foot rot and liver abscesses and contributes to substantial economic losses. Current vaccines provide limited protection. Here, we prepared and evaluated outer membrane vesicles (OMVs)-based vaccine candidate derived from F. necrophorum. OMVs were purified by density-gradient centrifugation and were characterized for morphology, composition, and immunological activity. The purified OMVs showed intact vesicle structure and a uniform particle size distribution and contained virulence-associated antigens and path

Epidemiological landscape and genetic prospects for marker-assisted selection in Kazakh sheep.

This comprehensive review examines the current epidemiological landscape, genetic resistance mechanisms, and control strategies for major sheep diseases in Kazakhstan. The study systematically analyzes three primary disease categories: parasitic infestations (including echinococcosis, fascioliasis, gastrointestinal strongylatosis, and protozoan infections), infectious diseases (foot rot, scrapie, Maedi-Visna, pasteurellosis, brucellosis), and hereditary disorders. Our analysis revealed significant regional variations in disease prevalence, with southern and western regions of Kazakhstan exhibi

A Hierarchical OhrR-EmrR Regulatory Circuit Fine-Tunes the Vfm Quorum- Sensing System and Virulence in Dickeya oryzae.

Rice foot rot, caused by Dickeya oryzae, is a destructive bacterial disease. The Vfm quorum-sensing (QS) system is a key virulence regulator of this pathogen. However, the mechanisms by which it perceives and integrates upstream environmental signals for precise transcriptional control are poorly understood. Here, we identify a cascade regulatory network involving the MarR-family transcription factors OhrR and EmrR. Deletion of ohrR in D. oryzae EC1 significantly reduced the Vfm signalling activity, diminished the production of virulence factors including phytotoxin zeamines and plant cell wal

Non-Targeted Metabolite Profiling Reveals Host Metabolomic Reprogramming during the Interaction of Black Pepper with Phytophthora capsici.

Phytophthora capsici is one of the most destructive pathogens causing quick wilt (foot rot) disease in black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) to which no effective resistance has been defined. To better understand the P. nigrum-P. capsici pathosystem, we employed metabolomic approaches based on flow-infusion electrospray-high-resolution mass spectrometry. Changes in the leaf metabolome were assessed in infected and systemic tissues at 24 and 48 hpi. Principal Component Analysis of the derived data indicated that the infected leaves showed a rapid metabolic response by 24 hpi whereas the systemic leave

Fusobacterium necrophorum Promotes Apoptosis and Inflammatory Cytokine Production Through the Activation of NF-κB and Death Receptor Signaling Pathways.

Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause liver abscess, foot rot in ruminants, and Lemire syndrome in humans, Also, its virulence factors can induce the apoptosis of macrophages and neutrophils. However, the detailed mechanism has not been fully clarified. This study investigated the mechanisms of apoptosis and inflammatory factor production in F. necrophorum-induced neutrophils and macrophages (RAW246.7). After infection of macrophages with F. necrophorum, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine labeling assays indicated that F. necrophorum inhibited macrophage proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent manner

Identification of linear B cell epitopes on the leukotoxin protein of Fusobacterium necrophorum.

OBJECTIVE: Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause Lemierre's syndrome in humans and a range of illnesses, including foot rot and liver abscesses, in animals. The main virulence factor released by F. necrophorum is leukotoxin, which has been shown to have a strong correlation with the severity of the disease. Leukotoxin is commonly employed as the key antigen in the formulation of subunit vaccines. Therefore, identification of the B-cell epitope of F. necrophorum leukotoxin is necessary. METHODS: In this research, we utilized lymphocyte hybridoma technology to develop a monoclonal antibody (mAb),

The effects of opioid and alpha 2 adrenergic blockade on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug analgesia in sheep.

The analgesic effects of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) flunixin and dipyrone were assessed in healthy sheep with no pre-existing inflammation, and in sheep with a chronic inflammatory lesion, using a mechanical noxious stimulus. Saline and dexamethasone were given as controls. Blood taken from healthy sheep after NSAID administration was assayed for thromboxane B2 (TxB2) to compare the ability of these drugs to inhibit cyclo-oxygenase. Both flunixin and dipyrone produced a small but statistically significant rise in pain thresholds (18% and 21% of maximum possible effect r

Smallholder farmers' perceptions of the impact of climate change on the mental and physical health of their livestock in semi-arid Ghana.

Climate change is increasingly disrupting smallholder farming systems across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with significant consequences for livestock health. While physical health impacts are relatively documented, the mental health dimension of livestock welfare remains underexplored, particularly in climate-vulnerable, low-resource settings. This study examined smallholder farmers' perceptions of their livestock health in Ghana's semi-arid Upper West Region and identified farmer-driven solutions for adaptation. Guided by the One Health framework, qualitative data were collected through focus gr

Spreading or Gathering? Can Traditional Knowledge be a Resource to Tackle Reindeer Diseases Associated with Climate Change?

This paper inquires whether reindeer herders' traditional knowledge (TK) provides a reservoir of precaution and adaptation possibilities that may be relevant to counteract climate change. As our core example, we used the milking of reindeer-which, in some areas, was practiced up until the 1950s-1960s-and the risk of getting foot rot disease (digital necrobacillosis; slubbo in North Sámi), caused by the bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum. Via wounds or scratches, the bacterium creates an infection that makes the infected limb swell and, eventually, necrotize. The disease is often mortal in its

Annual disease incidence in Colorado cow-calf herds participating in rounds 2 and 3 of the National Animal Health Monitoring System from 1986 to 1988.

Thirty-nine and 47 randomly selected Colorado cow-calf operations participated in the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) during rounds 2 (October 1986 to September 1987) and 3 (October 1987 to September 1988), respectively. Data on the incidence of disease conditions within each herd were collected by federal and state Veterinary Medical Officers and university veterinarians through monthly visits to the ranches. Annual disease incidence for disease classes and the most frequently reported individual disease conditions were determined and expressed on a per 100 cow basis. The mea

A survey on antibiotic usage in dairy herds in Pennsylvania.

A survey was conducted (July 2001 to June 2002) on antibiotic usage of 113 dairy herds from 13 counties in Pennsylvania. Fifty percent of dairy farms surveyed maintained antibiotic treatment records. Only 21% of dairy producers had written plans for treating sick animals. Thirty-two percent of dairy producers sought veterinarian advice before administering antibiotics and on most farms (93%), antibiotics were administered by the owner/manager or designated herdsman. Twenty-four percent of the dairy producers said they always completed the course of antibiotic treatment. Any extra-label use of

Sperm motion characteristics of Garole rams raised for a prolonged period in a semi-arid tropical environment.

The Garole is a prolific but less well known and rare breed of small sheep found in the hot and humid Sunderban region of West Bengal. An ability to breed throughout the year and to graze in knee-deep water, resistance to foot rot and a strong mothering instinct are some of the special features of this breed. Garole rams could provide germplasm to incorporate prolificacy traits by artificial insemination of the nonprolific sheep breeds found in abundance in the semi-arid and arid tropical climates of India. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the semen production by Garole rams mainta
