Medical Imaging and Facial Soft Tissue Thickness Studies for Forensic Craniofacial Approximation: A Pilot Study on Modern Cretans.

Forensic cases may require craniofacial approximations for unidentifiable victims. The accuracy of these approximations is improved by using population-specific average soft tissue depths. This study used CT scans from 64 Cretan adults (32 male and 32 female) to produce three-dimensional models of each individual's cranium and skin surface. Using the models, the soft tissue depths were measured at 36 craniofacial landmarks; the means and standard deviations were calculated for the general Cretan population, and for male and female Cretans separately. Cretan facial soft tissue depths were then

Scott test associated with multivariate image analysis: A more selective alternative for cocaine research in forensic laboratories.

Scott test is a simple, rapid, and low-cost preliminary test used extensively to suggest the presence of cocaine in drug seizures due to the development of a blue color. However, the presence of cutting agents can compromise the test result and may suggest the presence of cocaine when the drug is absent. This study evaluated the frequency of these results and the spectral behavior and color development of false positive substances. Furthermore, this study proposes the application of the partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) method associated with photographic images obtained by

Stature estimation from skull measurements using multidetector computed tomographic images: A Japanese forensic sample.

The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between stature and cranial measurements in a contemporary Japanese population, using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomographic (CT) images. A total of 228 cadavers (123 males, 105 females) underwent postmortem CT scanning and subsequent forensic autopsy between May 2011 and April 2015. Five cranial measurements were taken from 3D CT reconstructed images that extracted only cranial data. The correlations between stature and each of the cranial measurements were assessed with Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients. Simple and multip

Non-destructive forensic identification and quantification of cocaine through sealed packaging using FT-NIR spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging.

The forensic analysis of illicit drugs requires analytical methods that are rapid, reliable, and compliant with legal constraints concerning sample integrity. In this study, Fourier Transform Near-Infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) were evaluated as non-destructive tools for the identification, classification, and quantification of cocaine and its most common cutting agents, directly through sealed polyethylene packaging. Real samples of cocaine seized in four independent operations, together with six typical adulterants (creatine, caffeine, levamisole, lidocaine, l

Epidemiological, forensic, clinical, and imaging characteristics of head injuries acquired in the suicide attempt with captive bolt gun.

The captive bolt gun (slaughterer's gun) is a tool used in the meat industry for "humane killing" of animals. Used with the intent of suicide, the captive bolt gun causes very serious injuries. We analysed 19 self-inflicted head injuries with captive bolt gun during the past 20 years. Autopsy of 20 pigs killed by this method was also performed. All 19 cases were middle-aged men from rural areas, with low level of education, and without a previous psychiatric history. Five of them used the captive bolt gun daily in their professional activities, while the remaining 14 handled it only sometimes.

Development of a deep learning-based tool for coronary artery stenosis evaluation in forensic autopsies using whole slide imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality, with coronary artery disease accounting for over 60% of cases in adults. Accurate quantification of coronary stenosis in forensic autopsies is crucial for determining causality between pathological findings and death, but is hindered by subjective visual assessments and inter-observer variability. This study aimed to develop an AI-driven tool using whole-slide images for objective stenosis measurement in forensic investigations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 98 anonymized H&E-stained autopsy slides (234 coronary sections), 103 h

Minimal age principle versus Bayesian approach to combine age indicators from magnetic resonance imaging for multifactorial forensic age estimation.

Multifactorial age estimation is preferred over methods based on a single anatomical site. The main challenge of the multifactorial methods lies in calculating the overall prediction interval. This study compared the performance of two approaches to achieve this: the minimal age principle versus a Bayesian approach. MRI of the third molars, left hand/wrist, and sternal extremity of both clavicles were prospectively conducted in 335 healthy Austrian Caucasian males aged 13-24 years. Development was staged according to De Tobel et al. Multi-factorial age estimation: A Bayesian approach combining

Predicting the eyebrow from the orbit using three-dimensional CT imaging in the application of forensic facial reconstruction and identification.

Eyebrows are the most important facial feature in facial recognition with its shape rated to be more helpful than color or density for facial reconstruction or approximation. However, little extant research has estimated the position and morphological territory of the eyebrow from the orbit. Three-dimensional craniofacial models, produced from CT scans of 180 Koreans autopsied at the National Forensic Service Seoul Institute, were used to conduct metric analyses of subjects (125 males and 55 females) between 19 and 49 (mean 35.1) years. We employed 18 craniofacial landmarks to examine the morp

Magnetic resonance imaging of the medial extremity of the clavicle in forensic bone age determination: a new four-minute approach.

OBJECTIVES: The use of 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the clavicle in forensic bone age determination was prospectively examined and compared with plain radiography. METHODS: Four MRI sequences and three radiographs of 121 healthy subjects between 11 and 30 were studied by two observers. RESULTS: The number of images assessable for bone age determination was lower for plain radiography (PA: 68.7%; oblique: 97.5%) compared with MRI (VIBE: 99.0%). Concerning the subjective level of difficulty to assess bone age, the observers found it easier to assess bone age on MRI than on radiograph

Cellular phone-based image acquisition and quantitative ratiometric method for detecting cocaine and benzoylecgonine for biological and forensic applications.

Here we describe the first report of using low-cost cellular or web-based digital cameras to image and quantify standardized rapid immunoassay strips as a new point-of-care diagnostic and forensics tool with health applications. Quantitative ratiometric pixel density analysis (QRPDA) is an automated method requiring end-users to utilize inexpensive (∼ $1 USD/each) immunotest strips, a commonly available web or mobile phone camera or scanner, and internet or cellular service. A model is described whereby a central computer server and freely available IMAGEJ image analysis software records and a

Postmortem computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging facilitates forensic autopsy in a fatal case of poisoning with formic acid, diphenhydramine, and ethanol.

A case of fatal poisoning by ingesting formic acid, diphenhydramine, and ethanol by a 25-year-old woman who committed suicide is presented. Prior to autopsy, postmortem computed tomography and postmortem magnetic resonance tomography were performed and revealed severe damage to the stomach, the left thoracic wall, and parts of the liver. Imaging detected acid-induced fluid-fluid level within the thoracic cavity (fat-equivalent fluid and necrotic pleural effusion). This case report illustrates that postmortem cross-sectional imaging may facilitate dissection of severely damaged or complex regio

iForensic, multicentric validation of digital whole slide images (WSI) in forensic histopathology setting according to the College of American Pathologists guidelines.

Pathology has benefited from the rapid progress of image-digitizing technology during the last decade. However, the application of digital whole slide images (WSI) in forensic pathology still needs to be improved. WSI validation is crucial to ensure diagnostic performance, at least equivalent to glass slides and light microscopy. The College of American Pathologists Pathology and Laboratory Quality Center recently updated internal digital pathology system validation recommendations. Following these guidelines, this pilot study aimed to validate the performance of a digital approach for forensi

Neuropathology of Pediatric SARS-CoV-2 Infection in the Forensic Setting: Novel Application of Ex Vivo Imaging in Analysis of Brain Microvasculature.

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, there are few published accounts of postmortem SARS-CoV-2 pathology in children. We report 8 such cases (4 infants aged 7-36 weeks, 4 children aged 5-15 years). Four underwent ex vivo magnetic resonance neuroimaging, to assist in identification of subtle lesions related to vascular compromise. All infants were found unresponsive (3 in unsafe sleeping conditions); all but 1 had recent rhinitis and/or influenza-like illness (ILI) in the family; 1 had history of sickle cell disease. Ex vivo neuroimaging in 1 case revealed white matter (WM) signal hyperintensi

Combining Digital Camera Metadata and Artificial Intelligence to Sort Postmortem Gross Photographs: A Novel Approach in Image Classification in Forensic Pathology.

Reviewing postmortem photographs is routine in forensic pathology. Although standard photographic techniques are used, sorting postmortem photographs can be overly time-consuming, especially when reviewing large quantities of photographs. Artificial intelligence may assist in identifying body parts/locations but is challenged in determining spatial relationships such as sidedness, angle, and distance/depth. Metadata stored in modern digital cameras provides physical data that would assist in determining this information, which can be critical in the legal setting. This proof-of-concept study u

Development of an open-source 3D imaging method for forensic age estimation based on medial clavicular ossification: assessing area and volume ratios of epiphyses and metaphyses.

Forensic age estimation is essential for legal and social decision-making when reliable documentation is lacking. Traditionally, ossification of the medial clavicular epiphysis (MCE) is assessed by visual staging, but norm variants frequently limit classic systems and introduce error and irreproducibility. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) allows for quantitative morphometric assessment, potentially offering support - especially in such cases. Based on the approach of Hua et al. (2014) an open-source workflow for metric age estimation of the medial clavicles using semi-automatic three-d
