Correlation between gastrointestinal hormones and anxiety-depressive states in irritable bowel syndrome.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism(s) of action of gastrointestinal hormones in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and the correlation between gastrointestinal hormones and psychological factors. Patients with IBS were divided into IBS with normal emotional state ratings and IBS in anxiety-depressive states groups. The two groups were then subdivided into IBS-constipation predominant (IBS-C) and IBS-diarrhea predominant (IBS-D) groups. Non-IBS patients with normal depression and anxiety ratings were recruited as controls. The serum concentrations of somatos

Effects of electroacupuncture combined with acupoint catgut embedding on gastrointestinal motility and gastrointestinal hormones in rats with functional dyspepsia.

Electroacupuncture (EA) or acupoint catgut embedding (ACE) plays a therapeutic role in functional dyspepsia (FD). Herein, we aimed to elucidate the influences of EA combined with ACE on gastrointestinal motility and gastrointestinal hormones in rats with FD. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into the control group, model group, EA group, ACE group, and EA + ACE group (n = 10). Except for the control group, the rats in all groups were modeled by combining neonatal iodoacetamide gastrogavage and modified tail-clamping stimulation. The rats were treated with different treatments according to th

Inflammatory cytokines, appetite-regulating hormones, and energy metabolism in patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

This study investigated energy metabolism and its association with inflammatory cytokines and appetite- regulating hormones in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Subjects were inpatients scheduled to undergo therapeutic intervention for diagnosed gastrointestinal cancer. Nutritional status on admission was assessed based on anthropometric measurements, nutrition screening results, food intake rate (energy intake/energy provided in hospital food), and biochemical test results. Fat-free mass (FFM) was measured using the bioelectrical impedance analysis. Resting energy expenditure (REE) and r

Gastric emptying and plasma levels of gastrointestinal hormones in patients with peptic ulcer.

AIM: To study the plasma level of gastrointestinal hormones and the time of gastric emptying in patients with peptic ulcer. METHODS: Thirty patients with gastric ulcer (GU), 29 patients with duodenal ulcer (DU), and 12 healthy controls were studied. Plasma levels of somatostatin (SS), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and substance P (SP) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Gastric emptying half-time (GET1/2) was measured by the TC-99(m) resin/solid meal method. RESULTS: GET1/2 was significantly longer in the GU patients than that in the healthy controls (65.9 ± 14.8 min vs 53.3 ± 4.3 min,

Circulating gastrointestinal hormones in patients with flatulent dyspepsia, with and without gallbladder disease.

Fasting and post-prandial circulating levels of insulin, gastrin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide, pancreatic polypeptide and neurotensin were measured in patients with flatulent dyspepsia, with and without gallbladder disease and post-cholecystectomy. Levels were also measured in non-dyspeptic patients with gallbladder disease and normal controls. There were no consistent significant differences from controls for fasting and post-prandial responses in patients with a history of dyspepsia or those who experienced dyspepsia at the time of the test. In patients with gallbladder disease, with and

Gut hormones in POTS and their relation to hemodynamic parameters and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is associated with multiple autonomic symptoms, including gastrointestinal (GI) complaints, and has been linked to insulin resistance. We aimed to explore HbA1c, circulating metabolic hormones (insulin, C-peptide, GIP, GLP-1, glucagon, leptin, and peptide YY) and cortisol, and their associations with hemodynamic parameters and GI symptoms in POTS. Two POTS cohorts were studied and compared with matched controls. In the fasting cohort, blood samples were drawn in 42 patients and 41 controls, followed by active standing tests with measurement of p

[Clinical and experimental studies on pancreatic functions and gastrointestinal hormones after major pancreatectomy].

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the changes of gastrointestinal hormones and pancreatic functions after major pancreatectomy in dogs and human. After more than 92% pancreatectomy in dogs, all dogs developed diabetes mellitus (DM). In these dogs, the remnant pancreas showed poor regeneration rate of 24.0% at 6 weeks, decreased sigma IRI in IV-GTT had not been recovered, pancreatic glucagon response was diminished, pancreatic exocrine function had been declined with increased plasma levels of secretin and CCK, and gastric secretion increased in spite of diminished gastrin response.

Effect of duodenectomy on interdigestive pancreatic secretion, gastrointestinal motility, and hormones in dogs.

We tested the hypothesis that the duodenum is necessary to coordinate interdigestive pancreatic trypsin secretion with gastrointestinal motility and determined whether duodenectomy altered interdigestive cycles of plasma motilin and pancreatic polypeptide and their relationship to trypsin secretion and motility. Consequently, in normal and duodenectomized dogs, we measured trypsin secretion, gastrointestinal motility, and plasma concentrations of motilin and pancreatic polypeptide during the interdigestive period. After duodenectomy, peaks of trypsin secretion continued to cycle at normal inte

Effect of exogenous pancreatic enzymes on gastrointestinal and pancreatic hormone release and gastrointestinal motility.

In clinical practice, exogenous pancreatic enzymes are administered for the treatment of pancreatogenic steatorrhea or with the intention to relieve pain due to chronic pancreatitis. Moreover, a large number of patients take pancreatin (i.e., exogenous pancreatic enzymes) for functional dyspepsia. The effect of exogenous pancreatic enzymes on the enteropancreatic axis is a complex issue. Intraduodenal but not intrajejunal protease activity appears to exert a dose-dependent negative feedback on exocrine pancreatic secretion. Only enzymes with a proteolytic activity but not amylase and lipase ex

Growth hormone and gastrointestinal malignancy: An intriguing link.

Growth hormone (GH) excess is associated with several systemic complications, one of which is the increased risk of neoplastic processes particularly of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Among the GI neoplasms, the most reported association is with benign and malignant neoplasms of the colon. In the majority of published literature, an increased incidence of GI neoplasms, both colonic adenomas as well as colorectal carcinoma is reported. However, the studies on colon cancer-specific mortality rate are conflicting with recent studies reporting similar cancer-specific mortality rates in compariso

[Hormonal influence on gastrointestinal reflux during pregnancy].

UNLABELLED: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) occurs in 30-50% of all pregnancies. The progressive rise in plasma progesterone has been suggested as a possible mediator of GER during pregnancy. It is not known whether progesterone, at physiological concentrations, has an effect on acid contact time. The study includes 70 women--50 pregnant and 20 non pregnant healthy menstruating female volunteers. We used immunoenzymatic tests for determination of estradiol, progesterone and beta HCG hormones during pregnancy. The 50 pregnant women with GER symptoms heartburn, acid regurgitations had increased le

Medical and hormonal therapy in occult gastrointestinal bleeding.

In this age of modern technology and aggressive but noninvasive therapies, the idea of treating an identifiable but discrete bleeding lesion with systemic medical therapy seems an anachronism. But medical therapy can be the treatment of choice for some bleeding vascular lesions of the gut. Though most vascular lesions appear similar endoscopically and are a cause of gastrointestinal bleeding, they consist of various pathologic identities. These different lesions have not only different pathologic appearances, but also different prognoses. The natural history of many of these lesions remains la

Gastrointestinal hormonal dysfunction in gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Numerous hormones secreted by the gut, during both the fasted state and in response to a meal, influence gastrointestinal motor and/or sensory function, and appear to contribute to the pathogenesis of delayed gastric emptying associated with gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia (FD) and feed intolerance in critical illness. Gut hormones are, accordingly, potential targets for the management of these patients. PURPOSE: This article will discuss the hypersensitivity to enteral fat and endogenous (nutrient-stimulated) and exogenous cholecystokinin (CCK) in patients with FD, and the el

Postprandial effect of gastrointestinal hormones and gastric activity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Altered gut regulation, including motor and secretory mechanisms, is characteristic of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The severity of postprandial symptoms in IBS patients is associated with discomfort and pain; gas-related symptoms such as bloating and abdominal distension; and abnormal colonic motility. The aim of this study was to assess the postprandial response, i.e., gut peptide secretion and gastric myoelectric activity, in patients with constipation-predominant IBS. The study was conducted on 42 IBS patients (14 males, 28 females, mean age 45.1 ± 15.3 years) and 42 healthy participant

Do fluctuations in ovarian hormones affect gastrointestinal symptoms in women with irritable bowel syndrome?

BACKGROUND: An increase in gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including bowel discomfort, abdominal pain/discomfort, bloating, and alterations in bowel patterns, has been reported during premenses and menses menstrual cycle phases and the perimenopause period in women with and without irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the literature related to one possible physiological mechanism-declining or low ovarian hormone levels--that may underlie the occurrence or exacerbations of abdominal pain/discomfort at times of low ovarian hormones (menses, menopause) in women with or
