[Meningiomas: prognostic relevance of histopathologic and genetic markers].

The majority of meningiomas are histologically benign tumours. Location and invasion of tumour tissue in adjacent structures may hamper radical resections and give rise to recurrences. The rise in human life expectancy has prolonged the postoperative period and thus the risk of tumour recurrence has increased markedly. Infiltration in brain tissue and mitotic activity are important histologic features which negatively influence the disease-free duration of the postoperative period. Molecular studies of relevant genetic defects involved in meningioma are currently underway, but as yet these are

Determinant genetic markers of semen quality in livestock.

The reproductive efficiency of livestock is crucial for agricultural productivity and economic sustainability. One critical factor in successful fertilization and the viability of offspring is the quality of semen. Poor semen quality, especially in frozen-thawed semen used in artificial insemination (AI) have been shown to influence conception outcomes, resulting a negative impact on livestock production. Recent advancements in genetic research have identified specific markers linked to semen quality traits in various livestock species, such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, and equines.

Imaging Markers in Genetic Forms of Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. While the majority of PD cases are sporadic, approximately 15-20% of cases have a genetic component. Advances in neuroimaging techniques have provided valuable insights into the pathophysiology of PD, including the different genetic forms of the disease. This literature review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding neuroimaging findings in genetic PD, focusing on the most prevalent known genetic forms: mutations in the GBA1, LR

Biological, genetic and epigenetic markers in ulcerative colitis.

In this review, we have summarized the existing knowledge of ulcerative colitis (UC) markers based on current literature, specifically, the roles of potential new biomarkers, such as circulating, fecal, genetic, and epigenetic alterations, in UC onset, disease activity, and in therapy response. UC is a complex multifactorial inflammatory disease. There are many invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods in UC, including several laboratory markers which are employed in diagnosis and disease assessment; however, colonoscopy remains the most widely used method. Common laboratory abnormalities c

Genetic markers in ribosomal DNA for hookworm identification.

Polymerase chain reaction-linked restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of ribosomal (r) DNA was conducted on Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, A. tubaeforme and A. ceylanicum. The rDNA region spanning the first and second internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) plus the 5.8S (ITS+) gene was amplified by PCR from each of the species, digested separately with 9 restriction endonucleases and the fragments separated by agarose gel electrophoresis. Characteristic PCR-RFLP patterns were produced for each morphologically defined species using some of the endonuc

Association of genetic markers with some eye diseases.

In this study ocular conditions like cataract, corneal dystrophy, retinal detachment, primary glaucoma, myopia and strabismus have been examined for certain genetic markers to estimate the relative risks involved. The incidence of nontasters for PTC was significantly high in cases with congenital cataract, aphakic retinal detachment and convergent and divergent squint as compared to controls. Among nontasters, the frequency of total taste blindness was strikingly high in the disease group as compared to controls. Blood group A individuals showed significantly high risk for zonular cataract, co

Genetic characterization of the Entamoeba moshkovskii population based on different potential genetic markers.

Entamoeba moshkovskii, according to recent studies, appears to exert a more significant impact on diarrhoeal infections than previously believed. The efficient identification and genetic characterization of E. moshkovskii isolates from endemic areas worldwide are crucial for understanding the impact of parasite genomes on amoebic infections. In this study, we employed a multilocus sequence typing system to characterize E. moshkovskii isolates, with the aim of assessing the role of genetic variation in the pathogenic potential of E. moshkovskii. We incorporated 3 potential genetic markers: KERP

Molecular markers used in forensic genetics.

Forensic genetics is a field that has become subject to increasing interest in recent years. Both the technology and the markers used for forensic purposes have changed since the 1980s. The minisatellite sequences used in the famous Pitchfork case introduced genetics to the forensic sciences. Minisatellite sequences have now been replaced by more sensitive microsatellite markers, which have become the basis for the creation of genetic profile databases. Modern molecular methods also exploit single nucleotide polymorphisms, which are often the only way to identify degraded DNA samples. The same

Genetics and biological markers in urachal cancer.

Urachal cancer (UraC) is a rare tumor entity that usually develops at the basis of the remnant embryologic urachus. Consisting of mostly adenocarcinomas, most patients present with secondary symptoms due to an advanced stage with urinary bladder infiltration. One third of patients are already metastasized at presentation rendering them unsuitable for curative surgical treatment. In order to improve staging, treatment and follow-up, adequate knowledge about the genetic origin and potential markers is necessary. This paper reviews the English literature until December 2015. Pathologists argue fo

[Genetic marker of statin-induced rhabdomyolysis].

This review summarizes genetic factors predisposed to statin-induced rhabdomyolysis. The first genetic risk factor of statin myopathy uncovered by genome-wide analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms was the common variant of SLCO1B1 gene. Analysis of 30000 genetic markers in 85 patients with myopathy induced by high-dose simvastatin showed a strong association with 521T>C polymorphism of SLCO1B1. Another study also showed that this variant of SLCO1B1 has a significant association with myopathy in patients taking pravastatin or atorvastatin although the number of patients analyzed was limit

Genetic Variants as Sudden-Death Risk Markers in Inherited Arrhythmogenic Syndromes: Personalized Genetic Interpretation.

Inherited arrhythmogenic syndromes are the primary cause of unexpected lethal cardiac episodes in young people. It is possible that the first sign of the condition may be sudden death. Inherited arrhythmogenic syndromes are caused by genetic defects that may be analyzed using different technical approaches. A genetic alteration may be used as a marker of risk for families who carry the genetic alterations. Therefore, the early identification of the responsible genetic defect may help the adoption of preventive therapeutic measures focused on reducing the risk of lethal arrhythmias. Here, we de

Identification of Genetic Diagnostic Markers for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex and heterogeneous systemic autoimmune disease associated with poor treatment outcomes. While previous studies have indicated a genetic predisposition to SLE, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify diagnostic targets with potential genetic associations to SLE by leveraging bioinformatics and the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. METHODS: Six datasets (GSE30153, GSE39088, GSE50635, GSE50772, GSE61635, and GSE110169) were obtained from the GEO database for differential expressio

[Rare genetic markers of cognitive impairment in diabetes mellitus].

The study of potential mechanisms of cognitive impairments associated with gene expression in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is becoming increasingly important due to the increase in the prevalence of dementia in this category of patients. DM is associated with the alteration of neurogenesis, and the variability of glycemia causes the changes in plasma and mitochondria, promotes the formation of free radicals, oxidative stress, activation of apoptosis of neurons, circulation of proinflammatory agents and other pathological factors. The association between diabetes and cognitive impairmen

Genetic markers of artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium spp. parasites.

The vast majority of malaria patients worldwide are currently treated with combination therapy comprising one of the artemisinin family of drugs, characterised by rapid action and short plasma half-life, co-formulated with a longer-lasting drug from the amino aryl-alcohol or quinoline families. There is now a widely perceived threat to treatment efficacy, as reduced susceptibility to rapid artemisinin clearance in vivo has become prevalent among populations of Plasmodium falciparum in the Greater Mekong subregion since 2008. In vitro and in vivo drug selection studies, heterologous cell expres
