Increasing boreal fires reduce future global warming and sea ice loss.

Biomass burning can affect climate via the emission of aerosols and their subsequent impact on radiation, cloud microphysics, and surface and atmospheric albedo. Biomass burning emissions (BBEs) over the boreal region have strongly increased during the last decade and are expected to continue increasing as the climate warms. Climate models simulate aerosol processes, yet historical and future Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) simulations have no active fire component, and BBEs are prescribed as external forcings. Here, we show that CMIP6 used future boreal BBEs scenarios with unreal

Principle-based adept predictions of global warming from climate mean states.

Distinguishing anthropogenic warming from natural variability and reducing uncertainty in global-warming projections continue to present challenges. Here, we introduce a novel principle-based framework for predicting global warming from climate mean states that is based solely on carbon-dioxide-increasing scenarios without running climate models and relying on statistical trend analysis. By applying this framework to the climate mean state of 1980-2000, we accurately capture the subsequent global warming (0.403 K predicted versus 0.414 K observed) and polar warming amplification patterns. Our

Global warming induced spread of the highest human fascioliasis hyperendemic area.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is driving the occurrence of several infectious diseases. Within a One Health action to complement the ongoing preventive chemotherapy initiative against human fascioliasis in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano hyperendemic area, field surveys showed a geographical expansion of its lymnaeid snail vector. To assess whether climate change underlies this spread of the infection risk area, an in-depth analysis of the long-term evolution of climatic factors relevant for Fasciola hepatica development was imperative. METHODS: We used monthly climatic data covering at least a

Global warming in the palliative care research environment: adapting to change.

Advocates of palliative care research have often described the cold and difficult environment that has constrained the development of research internationally. The development of palliative care research has been slow over the last few decades and has met with resistance and sometimes hostility to the idea of conducting research in 'vulnerable populations'. The seeds of advocacy for research can be found in palliative care literature from the 1980s and early 1990s. Although we have much to do, we need to recognize that palliative care research development has come a long way. Of particular not

Biochar modulates microbial carbon metabolism to mitigate global warming potential during composting.

Carbon loss via CO2 and CH4 emissions reduces the organic carbon available for humification, which may negatively affect compost quality while exacerbating environmental pollution. Herein, this study investigated the impacts of biochar (e.g., rice husk biochar (RHB) and sawdust biochar (SDB) as composting additives on CO2 and CH4 emissions, as well as the underlying microbial mechanisms. The results demonstrated that, comparing to the control (CK), RHB and SDB reduced cumulative CO2 emissions by 11.38% and 16.30%, respectively (both P < 0.05), whereas they increased CH4 emissions by 45.35% (P

Modeling the influence of global warming on carbon, phytoplankton, and zooplankton dynamics.

Over the last 250 years, anthropogenic activity has increased atmospheric carbon dioxide by nearly 40%. This increase is mainly caused by human fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, which are the main causes of global warming. Phytoplankton of the world's oceans synthesizes half of the carbon dioxide of the total Earth's photosynthetic activity. Thus, phytoplankton plays a crucial role in controlling Earth's climate. To study this scenario, we propose and analyze a mathematical model for the carbon-phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction dynamics. Positivity, boundedness, existence, and stab

Global Warming and Dairy Cattle: How to Control and Reduce Methane Emission.

Agriculture produces greenhouse gases. Methane is a result of manure degradation and microbial fermentation in the rumen. Reduced CH4 emissions will slow climate change and reduce greenhouse gas concentrations. This review compiled studies to evaluate the best ways to decrease methane emissions. Longer rumination times reduce methane emissions and milk methane. Other studies have not found this. Increasing propionate and reducing acetate and butyrate in the rumen can reduce hydrogen equivalents that would otherwise be transferred to methanogenesis. Diet can reduce methane emissions. Grain lowe

High-resolution simulations reveal positive global warming feedback from Pacific low clouds.

Uncertainty in marine low-level cloud feedbacks limits accurate climate projections. Using 7083 high-resolution simulations of tropical Pacific low clouds, we separated the impacts of sea surface warming from direct carbon dioxide (CO2) effects. Surface warming alone drives a positive low-cloud feedback of [Formula: see text]. While this changes little with doubled CO2, the total cloud radiative response strengthens markedly to [Formula: see text] under quadrupled CO2, revealing a strong nonlinear interaction. Surface warming alone modifies the boundary layer through increased inversion streng

Global warming enhances nanoplastics toxicity: Insights into body shrinkage and energy deficit.

Understanding the effects of global warming on nanoplastics ecotoxicity is crucial for environmental safety, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates the effects of low concentration polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on Daphnia magna over three generations, under different mean temperature (MT) and daily temperature fluctuations (DTF), simulating both current and projected climate scenarios, and further explored the underlying mechanisms. Our results demonstrate that nanoplastics impaired growth, reproduction, and behavior, which were all exacerbated unde

Warming Amplifies Responses of Soil Organic Carbon to Multiple Global Change Drivers.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the largest terrestrial C reservoir on Earth, which plays a critical role in climate regulation. While global warming is a defining feature of anthropogenic climate change, its interactive effects with other global change drivers on the content of SOC remain unclear. For this study we conducted a global meta-analysis of 2349 observations from 363 studies, which revealed that warming alone reduced SOC by 7.2% while synergistically amplifying responses to other drivers. It enhanced the effects of elevated CO2 by 240% and those of nitrogen addition by 350%, while exac

Ozone trends and their sensitivity in global megacities under the warming climate.

Tropospheric ozone formation depends on the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). In megacities, abundant VOC and NOx sources cause relentlessly high ozone episodes, affecting a large share of the global population. This study uses data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument for formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) as proxy data for VOC and NOx emissions, respectively, with their ratio serving as an indicator of ozone sensitivity. Ground-level ozone (O3) reanalysis from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring is used to assess the O3 trends. We evaluate

Global Warming and Rising Threat of Dengue Fever: Expectations in Disease Management.

Arbovirus-borne dengue fever remains a global public health threat. The actual burden of dengue infection may be underestimated due to undiagnosed or misdiagnosed fever cases. The distribution of dengue is influenced by both climatic and nonclimatic factors, including global warming, which affects the vector population and transmission period. Other factors, such as serotype evolution and host immunity, also contribute to the spread of the virus. Different serotypes of the dengue virus show different clinical manifestations. The prevalence of serotypes varies geographically and over time. Earl

Malaria trends in Ethiopian highlands track the 2000 'slowdown' in global warming.

A counterargument to the importance of climate change for malaria transmission has been that regions where an effect of warmer temperatures is expected, have experienced a marked decrease in seasonal epidemic size since the turn of the new century. This decline has been observed in the densely populated highlands of East Africa at the center of the earlier debate on causes of the pronounced increase in epidemic size from the 1970s to the 1990s. The turnaround of the incidence trend around 2000 is documented here with an extensive temporal record for malaria cases for both Plasmodium falciparum

[Impact of climate warming and global pollution on the obesity and diabetes epidemic].

This article discusses the potential roles of global warming and various environmental pollutants in the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Global warming may exert detrimental effects through both biological pathways (reduced thermogenesis, adipocyte dysfunction) and behavioural mechanisms (decreased physical activity, sleep disturbances). Pollutants - whether present in ambient air (fine particulate matter), water, or food (broadly defined pesticides, industrial and domestic chemicals) - can alter metabolic processes, particularly within adipocytes, a key site where they t

Chagas disease in the context of the 2030 agenda: global warming and vectors.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. Thousands of years and centuries of colonisation have passed the precarious housing conditions, food insecurity, lack of sanitation, the limitation of surveillance, health care programs and climate change. Chagas disease continues to be a public health problem. The control programs have been successful in many countries in reducing transmission by T. cruzi; but the results have been variable. WHO makes recommendations for prevention and control with the aim of eliminating Chagas disease as a publ

Temperature-responded microbial vanadium(V) reduction under a global warming scenario in aquifers.

Microbially mediated vanadium (V) [V(V)] reduction is a key process for in situ remediation of vanadium-contaminated aquifers. In the context of global warming, the response of this process to temperature change remains poorly understood. This study investigated V(V) reduction dynamics and underlying mechanisms across a temperature gradient. V(V) reduction efficiency increased progressively with temperature rising, with 58.0 ± 3.16% at 4 °C and 67.3 ± 2.34% at 45 °C, respectively. V(V) was predominantly reduced to amorphous V(IV) precipitates. DNA stable isotope probing revealed V(V)-reducing

Modeling of Human Rabies Cases in Brazil in Different Future Global Warming Scenarios.

Bat species have been observed to have the potential to expand their distribution in response to climate change, thereby influencing shifts in the spatial distribution and population dynamics of human rabies cases. In this study, we applied an ensemble niche modeling approach to project climatic suitability under different future global warming scenarios for human rabies cases in Brazil, and assessed the impact on the probability of emergence of new cases. We obtained notification records of human rabies cases in all Brazilian cities from January 2001 to August 2023, as reported by the State a
