Glycated Hemoglobin, Lifestyle, and Sarcopenia in Rural Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Sarcopenia threatens independence in rapidly aging rural populations, yet its metabolic and lifestyle correlates remain under-characterized in Korea. We analyzed rural residents aged ≥ 65 years from the 2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 398). Sarcopenia was defined using Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria as low appendicular muscle mass plus low handgrip strength. Covariates included sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, past-year alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, and glycated hemoglobin (Hb

Glycated Hemoglobin A1c Time in Range and Dementia in Older Adults With Diabetes.

IMPORTANCE: Individuals with diabetes commonly experience Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD). Factors such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and glycemic variability have been associated with increased risk of ADRD. Traditional glycemic measures, such as mean glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), may not identify the dynamic and complex pathophysiologic factors in the association between diabetes and ADRD. The HbA1c time in range (TIR) is a previously developed measure of glycemic control that expresses HbA1c stability over time within specific ranges. This measure may inform the current

Cognitive decline in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with glycated albumin, ratio of Glycated Albumin to glycated hemoglobin, and concentrations of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlations of cognitive function with glycated albumin (GA), the ratio of GA to glycated hemoglobin (GA/HbA1c), and the concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: A total of 44 elderly T2DM patients were evaluated for cognitive function using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA). Patients were then divided into two groups based on the MMSE and MoCA scores: a cognitive dysfunction group and a normal cognitive function gro

Eye Focusing Ability Can Predict Glycated Hemoglobin Level of Type-1 Diabetes Patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. However, current tests are complex, invasive, costly, and often met with low compliance. This study aimed to find whether simple clinical, noninvasive measures of the ocular accommodation function may predict the glycated hemoglobin results in type-1 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: In a single-examiner-blind study, Near Point of Accommodation (NPA) and Lag of Accommodation (LoA) were compared between type-1 diabetes patients and controls. NPA was measured by the push-up-to-blur method, LoA by the M

Causal Relationship Between Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) and Cataract: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study.

PURPOSE: Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) has been linked to cataract in previous epidemiological observational studies; however, the exact causal relationship between HbA1c and cataract formation remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using data from two datasets in IEU OpenGWAS database. Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) estimation was used as the primary analysis, followed by the application of four complementary methods to detect and correct the effect of horizontal pleiotropy. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used as instrumental

Diabetes, Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c), and Neuroaxonal Damage in Parkinson's Disease (MARK-PD Study).

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is associated with incidence and prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD). Furthermore, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels have been linked with motor function and progression. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the relationship between prevalent diabetes and HbA1c levels with serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels as marker of neuroaxonal damage. METHODS: NfL concentrations were analyzed with Simoa in serum of 195 PD patients with available HbA1c values. Motor (MDS-UPDRS III, Hoehn & Yahr [H&Y]) and cognitive (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]) function was assessed and va

Prognostic Value of Glycated Hemoglobin in Frail Older Diabetic Patients With Hip Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown increased risk of fracture in older patients with poor or strict glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin, HbA1c, ≥ 8% or < 6-7% respectively); however, these reports did not investigate the oldest-old population. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and a patient-centered approach have been proven to improve the quality of care in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in the older patients, but data regarding T2DM in patients with fragility fractures are still lacking. AIM: To investigate the prognostic role of HbA1c and frailty level in o

Real-time continuous glucose monitoring with subcutaneously inserted sensor correlates better than subcutaneously implantable sensor with glycated hemoglobin, glycated albumin and fructosamine.

BACKGROUND: Real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) is widely used in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to improve glycemic control by reducing postprandial glucose peaks and hypoglycemic episodes. In addition, traditional biomarkers such as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), glycated albumin, and fructosamine provide retrospective estimates of glucose regulation over varying timeframes. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between these biomarkers and glycemic metrics obtained from two types of RT-CGM systems: an implantable sensor (Eversense E3) and subcutaneously inserted senso

An incidental finding of a hemoglobin E variant in a diabetic patient with an abnormal glycated hemoglobin level: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Glycated hemoglobin is a well-known marker for evaluating long-term glycemic control. However, the accuracy of glycated hemoglobin measurement can be affected by the presence of hemoglobin variants, which makes the determination and interpretation of glycated hemoglobin values in terms of glycemic control not only difficult but also misleading. Here we present the first ever case of a patient with type 2 diabetes with hemoglobin E from Nepal, diagnosed incidentally because of spurious glycated hemoglobin levels. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old Hindu Mongolian female with a histor

Moving Beyond Glycated Hemoglobin to Glucose Patterns: Newer Indications for Continuous Glucose Monitor Use.

Glucose homeostasis is a constant process involving several physiological mechanisms. Estimation of glucose via continuous glucose monitor (CGM) sensors provides a 24-hour comprehensive evaluation of glycemic excursions, enabling a closer understanding of the underlying defective mechanisms beyond current biomarkers of glycemia, focusing on the impact of glucose exposure, and not on the constant changes. CGM use in type 2 diabetes has shown to have a beneficial effect in improving glycated hemoglobin and time spent in range of 70-180 mg/dL. Some studies have also shown a legacy effect of CGM u

The clinical usefulness of glycated hemoglobin in monitoring diabetes mellitus: a long-term study.

To assess the long-term clinical usefulness of measuring glycated hemoglobin (Hb A1), we carried out a two-year longitudinal study involving 234 diabetic patients (116 males, 118 females; 139 with type I diabetes mellitus, 95 with type II). Hb A1 values correlated significantly (p less than 0.001) with a score index based on plasma glucose in a specimen collected after overnight fasting, and urinary glucose, and ketones in a 24-h specimen. However, we found that one of every three well-controlled patients (both type I and II subjects) had high values for Hb A1. Among poorly controlled patients

Impact of diabetes and glycated hemoglobin level on the clinical manifestations of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of diabetes mellitus (DM) has been suggested to accelerate the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) and make the phenotype more severe. In this study, we investigated whether DM or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels affect the differences in motor and nonmotor symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 140 consecutive Japanese patients with PD for whom medical history and serum HbA1c records were available. The PD patients with a DM diagnosis were classified into the diabetes-complicated group (PD-DM) and the nondiabetes-complicated group

Glycated Albumin Identifies Prediabetes Not Detected by Hemoglobin A1c: The Africans in America Study.

BACKGROUND: Following immigration to the US, many Africans transition from a low-normal to a high-normal or overweight body mass index (BMI). This weight change is associated with a high rate of prediabetes in the nonobese. Studies in East Asians reveal that glycated albumin is effective in identifying prediabetes in nonobese Asians. Whether this is true in African immigrants is unknown. Therefore, we evaluated the ability of hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c) and glycated albumin to detect prediabetes in nonobese (BMI <30 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) African immigrants. METHODS: Oral glucose tolera
