American Indian/Alaskan Native grandparents raising grandchildren: findings from the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey.

This article documents the prevalence and national profile of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, based on data from the American Community Survey/Census 2000 Supplementary Survey. In 2000 there were estimated to be nearly 53,000 AI/AN grandparent caregivers age 45 and older in the United States. Almost half of the caregiving grandparents had been raising a grandchild for five years or longer. The findings reveal a portrait of grandparents committed to raising their grandchildren despite the fact that many were living in extreme poverty, wit

Role of grandparents in risky health behavior transmission: A study on smoking behavior in Norway.

Exploring the role of grandparents in the intergenerational transmission of risky health behaviors, specifically smoking, this study aims to examine the differential influence of maternal and paternal grandparents on their grandchildren's smoking behavior in adulthood. Utilizing the Tromsø Study's unique three-generational dataset from Tromsø, Norway, we employ a control function approach. The findings show a matrilateral bias, revealing that maternal grandparents' smoking behavior has a notable negative direct effect on the probability of their grandchildren's smoking. No such influence is ob

Location, Location, Location: How Community Distress Shapes Physical and Mental Health Outcomes for Caregiving Grandparents.

BackgroundThe health of caregiving grandparents is a critical area of research. Financial strain is a well-established predictor of health and a common issue for caregiving grandparents.ObjectiveWe sought to understand how community context influences this relationship between financial strain and health. Specifically, we examined two dimensions of community context: community distress and perceived access to key resources for caregiving.MethodsUsing a sample of caregiving grandparents (N = 439), we first conducted Latent Class Analysis to identify distinct profiles of resource access. We then

Perceptions of being grandparents of children living with type 1 diabetes in Sweden: a qualitative interview study.

AIM: This study aimed to describe the perceptions of being grandparents of a grandchild living with type 1 diabetes. INTRODUCTION: When a child develops a lifelong condition, it affects the whole family, and caring for a child with chronic illness can be stressful. This ongoing stress can impact family relationships. In addition to parents, siblings and grandparents are often among the first to learn about the child's condition and may be the initial source of support. METHODS: Individual interviews were conducted with 11 grandparents from northern Sweden who met the inclusion criteria of ha

When Grandparents Step Back: Fertility Intentions and Policy Implications in the Context of Delayed Retirement in China.

As countries implement delayed retirement policies to address population aging, reduced availability of grandparental childcare emerges as an unintended consequence that may further depress fertility intentions. This study examines whether household income improvement and formal childcare provision can mitigate the fertility-suppressing effects of diminished grandparental care. Using factorial survey experiments embedded in a national Chinese survey, fertility intentions were assessed under randomized scenarios. Results show grandparental care absence reduced second- and third-birth intentions

Grandparents in 3D: Unpacking personal, parental, and grandparental dimensions in the immediate aftermath of an acute trauma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how Israeli grandparents of young grandchildren navigated personal, parental, and grandparental roles during the first month following the October 7, 2023, terror attacks and the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Grandparents hold a central yet understudied role in family systems during collective trauma, but little attention has been paid to grandparents' layered identities and coping strategies. METHOD: This is a qualitative study with 16 grandmothers and five grandfathers (40-73 years old) based on semistructured in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis

Child Health Status and Health Care Use in Grandparent- Versus Parent-Led Households.

OBJECTIVES: To use a nationally representative sample to compare children in grandparent-led versus parent-led households with regard to diagnosed child health conditions, receipt of timely health care, and burden of caregiving responsibilities. METHODS: We used 4 years of pooled data from the National Survey of Children's Health, representative of United States children ages 0 to 17 years, and applied bivariate analyses and logistic regressions adjusted for sociodemographic confounders to compare grandparent- and parent-led households on key measures of interest. RESULTS: Compared with chil

Examining the association between childhood asthma and parent and grandparent asthma status: implications for practice.

Examination of intergenerational asthma beyond maternal asthma has been limited. The association between childhood asthma and intergenerational asthma status among a national cohort of children was examined. The genealogical sample (2552 children) participating in the Child Development Supplement of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics was studied. Multivariate regression was used to determine intergenerational asthma. Children with a parent with asthma were almost twice as likely (odds ratio [OR] = 1.96) to have asthma compared with those without a parent with asthma. Children with a parent and

Associations of Grandparenting Dimensions/Styles with Mental Health in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

In recent decades, grandparents' increased involvement in child-rearing around the world has accelerated research on grandparenting. However, findings have remained inconsistent, and no reviews have examined how grandparenting dimensions and styles affect child and adolescent mental health. In our systematic review and meta-analysis, we synthesized evidence on the relationship between dimensions and styles of grandparenting and children's and adolescents' mental health. In nine databases, we identified 3197 studies on the relationship between dimensions and styles of grandparenting and childre

Grandparenting perceptions among Black and White American adults: comparisons across gender, race, and personality.

Despite the importance of grandparenthood as a prominent life role in older adulthood, there remains a paucity of research into individual differences in the perception of grandparenthood. The current study employed data from the St. Louis Personality and Aging Network dataset to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Experiences of Grandparenting (MEG) scale and to examine the extent to which perceptions of grandparenthood vary as a function of race, gender, and personality (N = 526, Mage = 70.9; 59.1% females; 72.1% White). Measurement invariance tests supported the uti

Intergenerational transmission of gambling: links between young adult and perceived grandparent gambling attitudes and behavior.

This study examined associations between the gambling attitudes and behavior of 213 young adults and their perceptions of the gambling attitudes and behavior of their closest grandparent. Regression analyses showed that young adult gambling attitudes mediated the relations between perceived grandparent gambling attitudes and behavior and young adult gambling behavior. Grandparent-grandchild relationship quality experienced while growing up did not moderate the relations between young adult and perceived grandparent gambling attitudes and behavior. Men experienced gambling at a younger age and

Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their grandparents: a Western Australian retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, childcare is traditionally shared by kin. Little is known about how grandparental care impacts Aboriginal child health and evidence from other countries is mixed. We explored relationships between grandparental health (a proxy for grandparental care) and health and health service use by Aboriginal children born in Western Australia from 2000 to 2013. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study using linked administrative health data. Outcomes were child mortality, hospital admissions, and emergency department (ED)

Grandchild, grandparent, and parent coresidence from 1970 to 1990: structural factors affecting state patterns.

This study analyzes structural forces affecting state patterns of parental presence within grandparent-grandchild coresidence by testing demographic, social change, policy environment, and social problems models. The project combines published state-level data with the 1970, 1980, and 1990 Census Public Use Microdata Samples. While factors differentially affect the proportion of children living in each household structure, coresidence seems to be encouraged by social contexts in which people are poor, the middle generation is likely to die, and which have higher rates of births to teens. Grandparenting, intergenerational coparenting, and mental health of vulnerable children in Chinese families: risks, resilience, and clinical implications.

In China, grandparents serve as primary or co-caregivers for millions of children, particularly those separated from rural-to-urban migrant parents. This short communication synthesizes evidence on how grandparenting quality and intergenerational coparenting dynamics shape the mental health outcomes of vulnerable Chinese children, including those in left-behind, three-generation urban, and dual-income family configurations. We distinguish throughout between children whose parents have both migrated (leaving grandparents as sole custodial caregivers) and children who remain in triadic parent-gr

Longitudinal associations between perceived father and grandparent support of mothers in early childhood, and maternal mental health.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health issues have emerged as a public health concern garnering increasing attention in recent years, especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The involvement of fathers and grandparents in infant care has been recognized as a key factor affecting maternal mental health. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between infant care assistance patterns and maternal mental health issues. This study aims to examine how infant care assistance patterns and its transitions over time affect maternal mental health in rural China. METHOD: This long

Needs-gap analysis on culturally and linguistically diverse grandparent carers' 'hidden issues': a quality improvement project.

In Australia, a significant number of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) grandparents are sole carers for their grandchildren. Available information on the impact of caring on CALD grandparents and the ability of service providers to respond to their needs is limited. Our needs-gap analysis quality improvement project aimed to uncover 'hidden issues' for CALD grandparent carers so that services can be improved. One hundred service providers, such as community and aged-care services, child and/or grandparent support services and CALD-specific services, were approached using six struct

The chronically ill grandparent in minority multigenerational family households: problems and solutions from three points of view.

The Interactional Model of Family Systems was used as a basis for exploring the problems of the chronically ill grandparent from three points of view: the elder family member, the adult child, and the grandchild. A descriptive correlational study was utilized to collect data on a purposive sample of 10 minority families recruited from the Montgomery County Council of the National Council of Negro Women, personal contacts of the investigators, and referrals from a family physician who treats the chronically ill elder members. Data was obtained on the family environment, perceived support, physi

Grandparent involvement and children's emotional and behavioral problems: the mediating role of social competence and the moderating role of family functioning.

This study examined whether social competence accounts for part of the association between grandparent involvement and children's emotional and behavioral problems, and whether family functioning modifies the strength of the association between grandparent involvement and social adaptability. Data were collected from 729 parents of children aged 3-7 years in China across three time points. Participants completed measures of grandparent involvement, family functioning, social adaptability, and emotional and behavioral problems. Moderated mediation analysis revealed that grandparent involvement
