Sources of Happiness According to Life Periods.

This study aimed to explore the sources of happiness of individuals across different stages of their lives. A phenomenological study, which is a qualitative research approach, was designed. The sample consists of 129 participants (62 women, 67 men). Thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the data, and common themes were identified for each life stage. The analysis of the themes revealed that children and adolescents expressed the sources of happiness mostly through hedonic values, whereas individuals in middle adulthood and late middle age predominantly expressed them in eudaimonic values.

[Subjective happiness and psychological condition in SLE].

We reported the relationship between subjective happiness and psychological condition to investigate which factor effects the quality of life (QOL) in 18 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and compared them with age, sex and dose of steroid matched 18 patients with chronic glomerular nephritis (CGN). The patients were evaluated in morale scale-revised (Japanese version) which is a standard method of evaluating subjective happiness in relation to QOL. State-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) of Spielberger was used for evaluation of anxiety condition with self rating depression scale

I see happy people: Attention bias towards happy but not angry facial expressions in Williams syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Observations of behaviour and research using eyetracking technology have shown that individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) pay an unusual amount of attention to other people's faces. The present research examines whether this attention to faces is moderated by the valence of emotional expression. METHOD: Sixteen participants with WS aged between 13 and 29 years (mean = 19 years 9 months) completed a dot-probe task in which pairs of faces displaying happy, angry, and neutral expressions were presented. The performance of the WS group was compared to two groups of typically devel

Happiness, Not Awe, Makes People More Diversity-Oriented.

The current research aimed to examine whether experiencing awe has the potential to make people more positively inclined towards diversity. Awe was contrasted with effects of happiness, another positive and potentially perspective broadening emotion. Specifically, we examined the effect of experimentally induced awe on diversity attitudes, diversity fatigue, and an individual difference variable negatively associated with diversity: social dominance orientation (SDO) and compared this to the effects of a happiness induction. In a large-scale between-subjects experiment (N = 3196), participants

Happiness Maximization Is a WEIRD Way of Living.

Psychological science tends to treat subjective well-being and happiness synonymously. We start from the assumption that subjective well-being is more than being happy to ask the fundamental question: What is the ideal level of happiness? From a cross-cultural perspective, we propose that the idealization of attaining maximum levels of happiness may be especially characteristic of Western, educated, industrial, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) societies but less so for others. Searching for an explanation for why "happiness maximization" might have emerged in these societies, we turn to studies li

Sexual Orientation Concordance And (Un)Happiness About Births.

CONTEXT: A woman's happiness about a pregnancy and birth has implications for her child's health and her own well-being. Sexual orientation and, particularly, the extent of concordance across its dimensions (sexual identity, behavior and attraction) may be related to happiness about these events, but research on this relationship has been lacking. METHODS: Data on 5,744 pregnancies ending in births among women aged 15-44 in three waves of the National Survey of Family Growth (2006-2015) were examined. Weighted linear regression models examined the relationship between sexual orientation conco

The concept of happiness: a multidimensional scaling investigation.

This study investigated the concept of happiness using multidimensional scaling analyses. Two samples were studied. The first contained 100 adult males and females, aged nineteen to ninety (M = 39.5). The second contained 126 female adults, aged twenty-six to eighty-nine (M = 61.3), all Catholic nuns. Respondents provided word associates to the words happiness and unhappiness during separate one-minute intervals. Subsequently, the twelve most frequent associates and the word happiness were used in a written paired comparison task of dissimilarities between all possible pairs. In both samples,

The pathophysiology of 'happy' hypoxemia in COVID-19.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global crisis, challenging healthcare systems worldwide. Many patients present with a remarkable disconnect in rest between profound hypoxemia yet without proportional signs of respiratory distress (i.e. happy hypoxemia) and rapid deterioration can occur. This particular clinical presentation in COVID-19 patients contrasts with the experience of physicians usually treating critically ill patients in respiratory failure and ensuring timely referral to the intensive care unit can, therefore, be challenging. A thorough understanding of t

Infants' discrimination of happy and sad music.

Infants can detect information specifying affect in infant- and adult-directed speech, familiar and unfamiliar facial expressions, and in point-light displays of facial expressions. We examined 3-, 5-, 7-, and 9-month-olds' discrimination of musical excerpts judged by adults and preschoolers as happy and sad. In Experiment 1, using an infant-controlled habituation procedure, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 9-month-olds heard three musical excerpts that were rated as either happy or sad. Following habituation, infants were presented with two new musical excerpts from the other affect group. Nine-month-olds dis

A 12-year-old female patient with end-stage renal failure whose primary disease was reflux nephropathy, was first admitted for augmentation cystoplasty by using an ileum segment because of contracted urinary bladder. Four months later, she had a renal transplantation from her father on March 28th 1997. The first three days after the operation were uneventful. On the fourth day, she presented a severe rejection episode and was treated with steroid and ATG. A urinary fistula developed and she underwent surgery again on the 14th postoperative day. At surgery, apical resection + omentoplasty + nep

The "happy puppet" syndrome in two siblings.

Two siblings with the "happy puppet" syndrome are presented. Their clinical features are quite similar and closely resemble those of previously reported cases. These features include severe mental retardation, epileptic seizures, easily provoked and prolonged paroxysms of laughter, atactic jerky movements, hypotonia, large mandible with prognathia, and 2-3 cps spike and wave activity in the EEG. The occurrence of this syndrome in the two siblings suggests a genetic etiology possible as an autosomal recessive trait.

Determinants of happiness among pregnant women in Bangladesh.

Maternal happiness, an important indicator of well-being, has also been linked to child stunting, child survival and other health outcomes. This study examined factors associated with happiness among 2,722 pregnant women in Bangladesh, using nationally representative data from the 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. Chi-square tests were used to assess associations between happiness status and selected covariates, and survey-weighted ordinal logistic regression models were applied to identify potential predictors of happiness. Women's age, education level, functional difficulties, mobile p

The relationship between green tea consumption and happiness.

Although it has been suggested that green tea or its components may reduce psychological stress, the relationship between green tea intake and well-being has not been investigated in large-scale studies. In addition, no previous studies have simultaneously reported the relationships between green tea intake, social capital, and happiness. This study aimed to demonstrate the association between tea consumption and well-being after adjusting for its relationship with social network size. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study conducted between October and

(Un)happiness and voting in U.S. presidential elections.

A rapidly growing literature has attempted to explain Donald Trump's success in the 2016 U.S. presidential election as a result of a wide variety of differences in individual characteristics, attitudes, and social processes. We propose that the economic and psychological processes previously established have in common that they generated or electorally capitalized on unhappiness in the electorate, which emerges as a powerful high-level predictor of the 2016 electoral outcome. Drawing on a large dataset covering over 2 million individual surveys, which we aggregated to the county level, we find

Circuits Regulating Pleasure and Happiness in Bipolar Disorder.

According to our model, the motivation for appetitive-searching vs. distress-avoiding behaviors is regulated by two parallel cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) re-entry circuits that include the core and the shell parts of the nucleus accumbens, respectively. An entire series of basal ganglia, running from the caudate nucleus on one side to the centromedial amygdala on the other side, control the intensity of these reward-seeking and misery-fleeing behaviors by stimulating the activity of the (pre)frontal and limbic cortices. Hyperactive motivation to display behavior that potentially res

Happiness & Health: The Biological Factors- Systematic Review Article.

Happiness underlying factors are considerable from two dimensions: endogenic factors (biological, cognitive, personality and ethical sub-factors) and exogenic factors (behavioral, socialcultural, economical, geographical, life events and aesthetics sub-factors). Among all endogenic factors, biological sub-factors are the significant predictors of happiness. Existence of significant differences in temperament and happiness of infants is an indicator of biological influences. Therefore, this study aimed to consider biological factors that underlie happiness. At the first, all of the biological f

Happy Children: A Modern Emotional Commitment.

American parents greatly value children's happiness, citing it well above other possible priorities. This commitment to happiness, shared with parents in other Western societies but not elsewhere, is an important feature of popular emotional culture. But the commitment is also the product of modern history, emerging clearly only in the 19th century. This article explains the contrast between more traditional and modern views, and explains the origins but also the evolution of the idea of a happy childhood. Early outcomes, for example, included the novel practice of hosting parties for children

Idiopathic catastrophic thrombosis with happy ending.

A 59-year-old male patient suffered three life-threatening instent thromboses after an initial resuscitation due to an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction of the anterior cardiac wall. With a high-risk profile for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), he was placed on argatroban after the second reinfarction. Under this apparently appropriate treatment, a third reinfarction occurred, and the patient had to undergo high-risk cardiac bypass surgery. Later on, a deep vein thrombosis and an intracardiac thrombus formed. Despite a positive screening test for HIT and a single positive resul
