Mental health among commando, airborne and other UK infantry personnel.

BACKGROUND: Despite having high levels of combat exposure, commando and airborne forces may be at less risk of mental ill-health than other troops. AIMS: To examine differences in mental health outcomes and occupational risk factors between Royal Marines Commandos (RMCs), paratroopers (PARAs) and other army infantry (INF). METHODS: Three groups of personnel (275 RMCs, 202 PARAs and 572 INF) were generated from a UK military cohort study of personnel serving at the time of the 2003 Iraq war. Participants completed a questionnaire about their mental health and experiences on deployment. Differ

A total of 487 healthcare workers > or = 25 years in age and students (19-24 years) in hospital training were recruited. The overall prevalence of pertussis antibody determined by ELISA was 51.7%. No significant differences on prevalence by age group (19-24, 25-34, 35-44 and > or = 45 years) and occupatio

Transport Personnel Health Cohort (TRAPHEAC): study protocol and methodological considerations.

BACKGROUND: Only prospective cohort studies can capture changes in work conditions and their effects on health. Such studies are rare in bus drivers, despite their high rates of injuries and diseases. The three existing cohorts have limited exposure data, collected at baseline and thus uninformative on exposure and exposure-effect dynamics. Therefore, we aimed to develop the Swiss Transport Personnel Health Cohort (TRAPHEAC) and to anticipate and prevent potential bias. METHODS: To set up the study protocol, we first organized the stakeholder consultation and available data inventory. Second,

Exposure of Ugandan health personnel to measles and rubella: evidence of the need for health worker vaccination.

With rubella and, until recently, measles highly endemic in Uganda, health personnel are at risk of these vaccine-preventable diseases and a source of transmission to patients. Measles and rubella serology (IgG) and history of exposure and vaccination were determined among 311 health care workers in a nationwide study. All tested positive for measles IgG, whereas 49.2% reported having been vaccinated. Rubella antibodies were present in 98.1% of personnel; 3.2% of women of child-bearing age were still susceptible. Increasing age and longer duration of service increased the risk of rubella infec

Mental health and psychological wellbeing of maritime personnel: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Seafaring has frequently been reported to be a 'risky occupation' in terms of both physical and mental health. Individuals working in seafaring professions are exposed to various stressors in the workplace, including social isolation, exposure to poor physical conditions and long work hours. This systematic review aimed to update previous reviews by collating recent literature (published between 2012 and 2021) on the factors associated with mental health and wellbeing in seafaring personnel. METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched in April 2021 for primary peer-reviewed s

Periodontal health status in a cohort of young US Navy personnel.

OBJECTIVES: Neither the prevalence of periodontal disease nor long-term trends in periodontal health among US military personnel has been well studied. The authors analyzed dental records to assess the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease, characterize changes in periodontal health, and determine the associations of age, race, gender, and tobacco use with periodontal status among US Navy personnel. METHODS: Dental records from 1,107 personnel who entered military service in 1997 were gathered from eight US Navy dental treatment facilities. Demographic information, tobacco use status

Be well!: a computer-based health care interview for hospital personnel.

We developed a computer-based health care interview for employees at an urban teaching hospital. The interview is part of the hospital-wide, integrated Center for Clinical Computing (CCC) system at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and is available on 1500 terminals located throughout the hospital. The program emphasizes medical problems and patterns of living for which behavioral change is considered desirable. Conducted in private and with protection of confidentiality, the interview offers information about people and facilities available to help members of the hospital community seek bet
