The Vibrant Soundbridge represents a new approach to hearing improvement in the form of active implantable middle ear hearing device. Unlike conventional acoustic hearing aids, which increase the volume of sound that goes to the eardrum, the Vibrant Soundbridge bypasses the ear canal and eardrum by directly vibrating the small bones in the middle ear. Because of its design, no portion of the device is placed in the ear canal itself. The Vibrant Soundbridge has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment option for adults with moderate to severe sensorineural, conductive or mixed

Blast injury typically consists of a mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. The sensorineural component includes temporary as well as permanent threshold elevations. Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) are sensitive to functional changes in various levels along the auditory pathway. ABEP were recorded from 37 survivors of blasts and latency measures were correlated with clinical findings. Prolongation of peak latencies was correlated with the conductive component of blast-induced hearing loss, as well as with the TTS component of the sensorineural impairment. No central effec

More than 30 million U.S. adults have hearing loss. This condition is underrecognized, and hearing aids and other hearing enhancement technologies are underused. Hearing loss is categorized as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. Age-related sensorineural hearing loss (i.e., presbycusis) is the most common type in adults. Several approaches can be used to screen for hearing loss, but the benefits of screening are uncertain. Patients may present with self-recognized hearing loss, or family members may observe behaviors (e.g., difficulty understanding conversations, increasing television volume)

There are many deafness patients at present in the world. Bone-anchored hearing aids are well-established solutions for treatment of hearing-impaired patients, such as conductive deafness, mixed deafness and single side deafness. The article aimed to review the basic structure, clinical indications, surgical method and complications of bone anchored hearing aids, and for a new BAHA attract system,we also have a brief discussion. To conclude, the BAHA attract system is an aesthetic, easy, safe and effective hearing aid,and become the patient's preference.

Mixed sensorineural and conductive hearing loss is a common clinical manifestation of Paget's disease of the temporal bone, and while there are numerous clinical and pathologic reports on the condition, none have identified a consistent pathologic explanation for the hearing loss. We performed histologic studies on 26 temporal bones exhibiting Paget's disease from 16 persons, of whom 7 had audiometric testing performed. Contrary to common opinion, the conductive hearing loss is not caused by ossicular fixation; in fact, no cause could be found in the seven ears with documented conductive heari

This study estimated the prevalence of hearing disorders and associated risk factors in a 10% sample of all secondary-school students in Ismailia city, Egypt. All participants were given a questionnaire and Weber and Rinne tests for hearing disabilities. Among 2633 students, the prevalence of hearing loss was 22.2%, mostly sensorineural hearing loss. More students at technical schools had mixed sensorineural and conductive hearing loss (46.2%) than students at general (28.6%) or commercial (25.3%) schools. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the number of attacks of otitis med

Certain patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss can benefit from bone-conduction hearing devices or active middle ear implants. Available devices differ in coupling site, energy transfer from the sound processor to the implant, and the active or passive actuator technology. The audiological benefit of those devices depends on the maximum stable power output and the noise floor of the device, the degree and expected stability of the sensorineural hearing loss and the coupling efficiency with the aim on achieving a minumum of 30-35 dB effective dynamic range. The choice of the device is o

A prospective study was undertaken to investigate the incidence of sensorineural hearing loss in bullous myringitis. Fifteen patients with 21 ears diagnosed as bullous myringitis were seen over a 24-month period. Pure tone and speech audiometry were performed as early in the clinical course as possible; 7 ears demonstrated a sensorineural hearing loss and 7 ears a mixed loss. There were no purely conductive hearing losses. Recovery of hearing was complete in 8 of 14 ears. The findings of this study suggest that sensorineural hearing loss is common in bullous myringitis. The literature regardin

In patients with inadequate hearing improvement after tympanoplasty and failure of conventional hearing aid fitting, active hearing implants provide an alternative treatment option. Active middle ear implants function as a vibromechanical bypass of the stiffness and damping effect of a poorly oscillating tympanic membrane and the (reconstructed) ossicular chain. The selection of the hearing system depends on the maximum output levels of the hearing system and the anatomical conditions in mostly multiply operated ears. The development of variable coupling elements for active middle ear implants

A prospective study of hearing loss in 120 cases with non-explosive blast injury of the ear, gathered over a six-year period, is presented. Thirty-three (27.5 per cent) patients had normal hearing, 57 (47.5 per cent) conductive hearing loss, 29 (24.2 per cent) mixed loss and one (0.8 per cent) had pure sensorineural loss. The severity of conductive hearing loss correlated with the size of the eardrum perforation; only a marginal difference was found between water and air pressure injuries, with respect to this type of hearing loss. Of all locations, perforations involving the posterior-inferio

Introduction: Noggin encoding (NOG) gene plays a critical role in early embryogenesis and development of bones, joints, cartilage, eyes, and neural tissue. The NOG gene encodes the noggin protein. Noggin is the only secreted inhibitor of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) that is associated with abnormal phenotypes in humans. The most commonly observed manifestations of NOG gene mutations include bilateral conductive hearing loss, proximal symphalangism, broad thumbs, hyperopia, and a distinct facial appearance. This genetic disorder was first reported in 1990 by Teunissen and Cremers. Since the

Bonebridge is an active bone conduction device that consists of a bone conduction-floating mass transducer (BC-FMT) and magnet internally and an audio processor externally. Surgery for implantation can be performed under local anesthesia but requires surgical planning for adequate bone depth for the BC-FMT well. Bonebridge does not require osseointegration to function, so the device can be activated early. One disadvantage of Bonebridge is the sizable artifact on MRI created by the internal magnet. Studies of Bonebridge implantation demonstrate few complications, and hearing outcomes are audio
