Kawasaki disease is a common nonspecific vasculitis seen in childhood. The most significant long-term sequela is coronary artery aneurysm. However, the spectrum of complications involves not only the heart, but also other organs such as the eyes, skin, kidneys, gallbladder, liver, and central nervous system. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a relatively unrecognized complication of the disease. Although most of the complications (except coronary artery aneurysm) are self-limiting, SNHL can be persistent. It is, especially important in infants and young children who might not be able to rep

Gene therapy is a promising treatment modality that is being explored for several inherited disorders. Multiple human gene therapy clinical trials are currently ongoing, but few are directed at hearing loss. Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent sensory disabilities in the world, and genetics play an important role in the pathophysiology of hearing loss. Gene therapy offers the possibility of restoring hearing by overcoming the functional deficits created by the underlying genetic mutations. In addition, gene therapy could potentially be used to induce hair cell regeneration by delivering

It is known that sudden sensorineural hearing loss and other otoneurologic diseases, such as tinnitus or Ménière disease, occur more frequently in the left ear than in the right. We studied lateralization of sudden deafness in 489 patients treated at Radebeul Hospital from January 2004 to December 2009. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.24; we found a predominance of the left side only in female patients. The cause for this predominance is unclear. The slight asymmetry might indicate a greater vulnerability of the left inner ear in women, suggesting hormonal factors in the genesis of sudden dea

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is an acute febrile infectious disease, with high fever followed by symptoms flu-like. Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a vascular leak syndrome and could present spontaneous bleeding and worsening of symptoms after some days. Dengue could have some ENT manifestations, however hearing loss is not one of them. Sudden hearing loss is considered as sensorineural or perceptual hearing loss with a sudden onset in a person without other prior otological history. The relation between infectious diseases and sudden hearing are been investigated, some viruses were already linked,

This case study summarizes findings in an adult male, aged 57, who presented to the Adult Audiology Clinic with aural atresia in the right ear resulting in a conductive hearing loss and a sudden sensorineural hearing loss in the left ear. Treatment options included reconstruction surgery in the right ear, bone anchored hearing aid in the right ear to overcome the conductive hearing loss, bone anchored hearing aid in the left ear for single sided deafness, and intratympanic steroid injections in the left ear to salvage hearing. This case study highlights that when a patient is educated on all a

INTRODUCTION: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) occurs due to the deposition of extracellular fibrillar materials on the anterior chamber of the eye. This syndrome has been considered to be part of a systemic disease with the potential involvement of the inner ear called sensoroneural hearing loss (SNHL). In this study, we aimed on evaluating SNHL within PXS patients in Iran to compare them with other international reports.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 33 patients with PXS and 33 age and sex matched controls were enrolled prospectively in a case-control study. Both groups underwent complet

BACKGROUND: The hydrocodone/acetaminophen combination is one of the most commonly used analgesic preparations. Isolated incidences of suspected association between hydrocodone abuse and rapidly progressive hearing loss have been reported. In this study, we describe the clinical characteristics of 5 patients presenting with progressive hearing loss and a history of hydrocodone use.
METHODS: Patients presenting with rapidly progressive bilateral hearing loss who had a documented history of hydrocodone use were selected for the study. The presentation, audiologic findings, associated comorbiditi

Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, (WM) first described in 1944, is an uncommon disease caused by the abnormal production of immunoglobulin M monoclonal macroglobulin. Presenting signs and symptoms most frequently include fatigue or generalized weakness; tendency to bleed from mucosal surfaces; characteristic retinal lesions, including dilated and tortuous retinal veins, retinal hemorrhages, and exudates; lymphadenopathy; hepatosplenomegaly; sensory motor peripheral neuropathy; worsening normochromic anemia; increased sedimentation rate; and extremely high serum viscosity. Hearing loss is an unu

Acoustic neuromas represent about 90% of all space-occupying lesions of the cerebellopontine angle and account for approximately 6% of all intracranial tumors. Progressive unilateral sensorineural hearing loss is the most frequent initial symptom occurring in over 90% of patients. A sudden onset of hearing loss occurs in 5%, while 5% of cases present with normal hearing. The incidence of hearing loss does not seem to be related to tumor size. Accuracy of the tumor detection by gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging has been reported as 99-100% even for intracanalicular tumors. The ABR

Magnetic resonance contrast imaging using gadolinium-DTPA and performing new high resolution sequences (Fast Spin-Echo, Spoiled Gradient-Echo) or angiographic sequences (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) allows an excellent visualization of the inner ear and the cerebellopontine angle to be obtained. Furthermore, using sequences obtained with the "steady-state" technique (Gradient Recalled At Steady-State-GRASS, Constructive Interference at Steady-State-CISS), a good analysis of the structures of the membranous labyrinth can be achieved. Based on these diagnostic techniques, we have studied the

A case of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in MELAS syndrome, a variety of mitochondrial cytopathy, is presented. Mitochondrial cytopathies have gone almost unreported in the otolaryngology literature, despite evidence from a recent review that about 60 per cent of such patients suffer from SNHL (Gold and Rapin, 1994). The same review revealed that only one of 117 case reports in the period 1984-1993 contained an audiogram (Swift and Singh, 1988), and none presented sequential audiograms. However, audiometry has since been published on 23 members of a family with a mitochondrial point mutatio

A case is reported of a 59-year-old Caucasian male with oculopharyngeal myopathy and sensorineural hearing loss. He presented with progressive ptosis, sensorineural hearing loss over several years and symptoms of mild dysphagia. Further enquiry into his family history revealed that every male member in his family that lived beyond the age of 60 exhibited identical symptoms. Symptoms of ptosis and dysphagia are consistent with the rare autosomal dominant condition of oculopharyngeal myopathy, believed to be due to mitochondrial disease. The combination of ptosis, dysphagia and sensorineural hea

Sensorineural hearing loss is characterized by a relatively well defined set of audiological signs and symptoms such as elevated thresholds, abnormally rapid loudness growth, subjective tinnitus, poor speech discrimination, and a reduction in temporal summation of acoustic energy. Knowledge of the underlying neural mechanisms responsible for some of these auditory distortions has progressed substantially within the past 10 yrs as a result of physiological studies on hearing-impaired animals. Some of the important neurophysiological changes relevant to sensorineural hearing loss are reviewed. O

Five cases of sensorineural hearing loss are presented in which partial or complete recovery of hearing occurred after periods of deafness lasting from three months to more than five years. Three of the cases were diagnosed as Meniere's disease, one as sudden deafness of probable viral origin, and one as idiopathic sudden deafness. A review of the literature reveals brief mention of only a few similar cases, although it is suspected that the phenomenon is not as rare as these isolated reports suggest. It is proposed on the basis of experimental work in animals that the reversible deafness in t

Studies of clinical, audiometric and histological defects in patients with conductive otosclerosis, demonstrated the occurrence of subclinical manifestations in the hair, nails, joints and teeth. Light-microscopic examination of the skin in these patients has shown metachromasia of the ground substance and degenerative abnormalities in the collagen and elastic fibres. Structural abnormalities, in the organs developing from the ectoderm and mesoderm, led to the conclusion that otosclerosis is a universal disease characterized by ectomesodermal insufficiency, a somatic insufficiency. Bullous myringitis is manifested by moderately severe otalgia associated with vesicles on the tympanic membrane and medial external auditory canal wall. This disease occurs mainly in young adults, most commonly in winter, and is usually preceded or accompanied by an upper respiratory infection. A reversible sensorineural loss developed in three of 22 patients. Complement fixation antibody studies performed on ten patients failed to implicate Mycoplasma pneumoniae, influenza virus types A or B, or adenovirus as the causal agent.

BACKGROUND: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been suggested to occur in patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB); however, a clear association has never been documented. The present study prospectively investigated the development of SNHL in patients admitted for treatment of LNB using distortion-product-oto-acoustic emissions (DPOAE) as a measure of cochlear function.
METHODS: DOAE were measured in patients with LNB on the day of diagnosis, during treatment, and 30-60 days after discharge. Frequencies were categorized as Low (1, 1.5, 2 kHz), Mid (3, 4, 5 kHz), Mid-high (6, 7, 8 kHz), a
