Cognitive behavioral guided self-help for the treatment of recurrent binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: Despite proven efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating eating disorders with binge eating as the core symptom, few patients receive CBT in clinical practice. Our blended efficacy-effectiveness study sought to evaluate whether a manual-based guided self-help form of CBT (CBT-GSH), delivered in 8 sessions in a health maintenance organization setting over a 12-week period by master's-level interventionists, is more effective than treatment as usual (TAU). METHOD: In all, 123 individuals (mean age = 37.2; 91.9% female, 96.7% non-Hispanic White) were randomized, incl

Cognitive-behavioral self-help treatment for nightmares: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Several cognitive-behavioral techniques are effective in reducing nightmare frequency, but the therapeutic factor (e.g. cognitive restructuring, systematic desensitization) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the nightmare treatments imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT), exposure, and recording (keeping a diary)--in a self-help format--with a waiting list. METHODS: Participants were recruited through a Dutch nightmare website. After completion of the baseline questionnaires, 399 participants were randomly assigned to a condition, received a 6-week self-help treatment

Help-seeking behaviors of Chinese patients with schizophrenia admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

PURPOSE: To investigate the help-seeking behaviors and related factors of Chinese psychiatric inpatients with schizophrenia. METHOD: Two hundred and two patients with schizophrenia (ICD-10) were enrolled in this study. A locally-developed, semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data, including data on illness and help-seeking histories from patients, informants, and medical records. RESULTS: Among 202 inpatients, 120 patients (59.4%) had sought help from at least one type of non-psychiatric facility (NPF), and 82 patients (40.6%) went to a psychiatric hospital directly. Among the

From stigma to support: the mediating role of sympathy between nurses' perceived stigma and helping behavior tendency for alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: The detrimental effect of stigma on healthcare for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is well-established, often resulting in social distance and diminished helping behavior tendencies. However, contemporary neuroscience reconceptualizes addiction as a brain disease, potentially altering emotional responses to stigma. This study examines a seemingly paradoxical possibility: that under specific conditions, perceived stigma is primarily associated with sympathy (rather than anger or fear), which in turn is linked to helping behavior tendencies among nurses. METHODS: A cro

Happy and helpful: relationship of authentic leadership with employees helping behaviors: the mediating role of hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing among nursing staff.

PURPOSE: Authentic leadership plays a pivotal role in fostering helping behaviours among nursing staff within healthcare settings. Drawing on social learning theory, this study examines the impact of authentic leadership on nurses' helping behaviours and investigates the mediating roles of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being in this relationship, contributing to the growing body of nursing leadership and workforce well-being research. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Utilising a three-wave time-lagged design, data were collected from 230 nursing staff in large hospitals, to empirically test the pro

Prosocial helping behaviors attenuate accelerated cognitive decline driven by APOE ε4.

INTRODUCTION: The apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele accelerates cognitive decline through multiple biological pathways-including neuroinflammatory, vascular, and stress-regulatory mechanisms-yet few modifiable behaviors counter this genetic vulnerability. Prosocial helping engages these same systems in opposing directions, suggesting it may attenuate APOE ε4-related cognitive decline. METHODS: We analyzed more than two decades of longitudinal data from a large, multiethnic US sample (N = 17,972). Multilevel models that isolate within-person change tested whether transitions in formal voluntee

Impact of help-seeking behaviors on allergic rhinitis and mental health: A longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis (AR), anxiety, and depression are prevalent comorbidities that negatively impact patients' quality of life. This study explored how help-seeking behaviors act as intermediaries between medication use, AR symptoms as measured by the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22), and mental health outcomes, specifically anxiety and depressive symptoms, assessed through the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). METHODS: This longitudinal study analyzed data from 1035 adults 18 years and older. Participants were recruited from 105 non-a

Seeking support: insights into women's mental health help-seeking behavior in Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Depression and anxiety are leading contributors to the global burden of disease among women yet help-seeking for mental health concerns remains limited in lower-middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and help-seeking behaviors, and to identify factors associated with the absence of help-seeking among ever-married women of reproductive age in Bangladesh. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using nationally representative data from the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. Mental health outcomes were asses

Classroom-Level and Individual-Level Prosociality and Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Although individual prosociality, defined as voluntary behavior intended to benefit another, is known to promote help-seeking behaviors among adolescents, it remains unclear whether a prosocial community, such as the classroom, also facilitates these behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations of classroom-level and individual-level prosociality with help-seeking behaviors, considering age and gender, and to examine moderation effects of being bullied. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, annual surveys were conducted via questionnaire among

Strategies and help-seeking behavior among Mexican women experiencing partner violence.

According to a recent Mexican survey, 10.72% of women have at some point experienced sexual partner violence, and 23.71% physical violence at the hands of their current or last partner. Using this survey and a series of semi-structured interviews with experts, this study used a mixed-methods approach to examine, first, whether women who experienced violence turned to law enforcement agencies for help, and the characteristics of these women. Second, the research examined what type of service and treatment they reported receiving from these agencies. Finally, the research examined reasons women

Self-reported help-seeking behaviors and treatment choices of adolescents regarding acne.

Acne vulgaris is a common condition affecting adolescents that they often choose to treat on their own rather than seek out and follow medical advice. Using data from an anonymous survey administered to 1,214 students in public middle and high schools in New Jersey, we compared the self-reported acne frequency, severity, and beliefs of students based on their help-seeking behaviors, treatment choices, and treatment adherence. Chi-square analyses were performed for data comparison. A large proportion of students in this sample (57%) treated their own acne, and a much smaller proportion (17%) ha

Drug use, drug severity, and help-seeking behaviors of lesbian and bisexual women.

BACKGROUND: Illicit substance use and abuse may be an important contributor to behavioral health problems of lesbian and bisexual women. This paper describes the nature and extent of self-reported illicit and licit drug use, associated severity, and substance use-related helpseeking behaviors in an urban/metropolitan community sample of sexual minority women in California. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaire data from 2011 lesbian and bisexual women recruited through multiple strategies were used. Multiple logistic regression was employed to describe patterns of reported drug use and to

Physical violence by husbands: magnitude, disclosure and help-seeking behavior of women in Bangladesh.

This paper explores the magnitude of physical violence by husbands, the disclosure of it and the help-seeking behavior of abused women in urban and rural Bangladesh. The data come from a larger study on domestic violence against women conducted in Bangladesh during 2000-2004. All ever-married women covered by the population-based survey component (n=2702) conducted in 2001 were included in the current analysis. We also draw on in-depth interviews with 28 women who were physically abused by their husbands. Results show a high prevalence of lifetime physical spousal violence against women: 40% i

The effects of HIV counseling and testing on risk-related practices and help-seeking behavior.

In an earlier review of the behavioral effects of HIV counseling and testing (HIV CT), Higgins and colleagues (1991) found that the evidence regarding the ability of HIV CT to influence HIV-risk related practices was largely inconclusive. This article reviews 35 domestic and international studies published since that time to reassess the scientific data regarding the ability of HIV CT to motivate changes in risk-related practices and to promote help-seeking behavior. The studies identified for this review were grouped into four categories according to subject population: (1) men who have sex w

Multifaceted mental illness stigma and help-seeking behaviors among Latino older adults experiencing behavioral health problems.

OBJECTIVES: U.S.-based Latino older adult populations face disproportionate barriers to accessing behavioral health services. We examined associations between multifaceted mental illness stigma and help-seeking from different sources of behavioral health supports among understudied Latino older adults with behavioral health problems. METHODS: Data come from a cross-sectional survey that included U.S.-based Latino residents ages 50-86 (N=274; 2021). The survey measured mental illness biopsychosocial causal beliefs, treatment efficacy beliefs, and social rejection beliefs as multiple facets of

A Behavior Analytic Interpretation of Concussion Reporting in Athletes: How the Field of Behavior Analysis Can Help Make Athletes Safer.

Concussion resulting from athletic activities is a frequent occurrence in youth, collegiate, and professional sports. The first step in concussion treatment is usually the self-reporting of concussion symptoms by athletes. Unfortunately, over the past decade, concussion nondisclosure has remained a prominent concern in concussion identification. This review begins with a summary of the prominent theories being used to explain the deficit in concussion reporting (ie, lack of concussion knowledge, negative attitudes toward reporting, and socioecological models). Unfortunately, current literature
