The acquisition of surgical skills in highly specialized pediatric surgical procedures - particularly the management of rare congenital anomalies - poses significant educational challenges. Traditional training models relying on apprenticeship and intraoperative exposure are often insufficient due to the rarity and complexity of such conditions. Simulation-based training offers a structured, reproducible, and risk-free environment to practice and refine surgical techniques. This scoping review examines the current landscape of simulation in pediatric surgery, focusing on anorectal malformation

BACKGROUND: The outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients are poor. In some OHCA cases, the reason is potentially reversible cardiac or aortic disease. It was suggested previously that high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) followed by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support may improve the grave prognosis of OHCA. However, extended CPR (ECPR) with ECMO application is an extremely invasive and cutting-edge procedure. The purpose of this article is to describe how high-fidelity medical simulation as a safe tool enabled implementation of the complex, multi-s

BACKGROUND: Simulation has demonstrated superiority over purely didactic instruction in multiple contexts, and educationalists have embraced this modality for enhancing access to clinical skills. However, there remains uncertainty if increasing the realism (fidelity) of simulation equipment heightens performance. To address this within nursing and allied health, this review examines if increasing equipment fidelity improves learning outcomes.

Simulation technologies are gaining widespread acceptance across a variety of educational domains and applications. The current research examines whether basic nursing procedure training with high-fidelity versus low-fidelity mannequins results in differential skill acquisition and perceptions of simulator utility. Fifty-two first-year students were taught nasogastric tube and indwelling urinary catheter insertion in one of two ways. The first group learned nasogastric tube and urinary catheter insertion using high-fidelity and low-fidelity mannequins, respectively, and the second group learne

INTRODUCTION: Advances in knowledge regarding mechanical ventilation (MV), in particular lung-protective ventilation strategies, have been shown to reduce mortality. However, the translation of these advances in knowledge into better therapeutic performance in real-life clinical settings continues to lag. High-fidelity simulation with a mannequin allows students to interact in lifelike situations; this may be a valuable addition to traditional didactic teaching. The purpose of this study is to compare computer-based and mannequin-based approaches for training residents on MV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the current evidence for use of simulation in family planning procedural training.
RECENT FINDINGS: A variety of simulation models exist for abortion, contraception, and sterilization procedures, ranging from low to high fidelity. Most models for abortion and contraception are low fidelity, inexpensive, and provide opportunities for acquisition and practice of procedural skills. Hysteroscopic and laparoscopic simulation models for sterilization procedures are generally higher fidelity, and their use has been shown to increase knowledge, skill performance, and proc

BACKGROUND: Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is a life-sustaining therapy for children and adults suffering with severe digestive diseases, yet complications are commonplace, and predischarge trainings are variable. High-fidelity simulation training provides participants with an immersive experience using realistic equipment, supplies, and scenarios. Simulation training is rapidly becoming a potential gold standard for healthcare but is currently underutilized for families and caregivers.
METHODS: We prospectively collected data on pediatric patients managed at a single HPN program from Septem

There are limited data on the effectiveness of mannequin-based simulations in pediatrics. This study developed a training program using a high-fidelity child mannequin to simulate critical cases in an emergency department, and examined the learning gains derived from this simulation. Eighteen pediatric residents, as pairs, participated in a high-fidelity simulation pretest, training session and a posttest. The training session, developed based on participants' pretest performance, included videotape review, feedback, and hands-on practice, and focused on the improvement of management skills fo

BACKGROUND: The use of simulators in medical education is critical for developing procedural competence prior to treating patients. Current training of emergency physicians to perform distal radius fracture reduction is inconsistent and inadequate.
APPROACH: We developed a 3D printed distal radius fracture simulation training model that is easy to assemble and relatively inexpensive. We present step-by-step instructions to reproduce the model.
EVALUATION: The model was found to have high fidelity for training by both instructors and participants in a simulation-based mastery learning course.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation is a widely used educational tool for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. There are different levels of simulation fidelity; low fidelity uses simplistic models but is often cost/time effective, whereas high fidelity tends to bring more realism but is resource-intensive. In undergraduate medical training, simulation is often used for students in their final year of medical school prior to qualifying as a doctor, and therefore, the literature is limited with regard to students in their earlier years of training. The aim of this project was to create c

INTRODUCTION: First responders' training and learning regarding how to handle a mass-casualty incident (MCI) is traditionally based on reading and/or training through computer-based scenarios, or sometimes through live simulations with actors. First responders should practice in realistic environments to narrow the theory-practice gap, and the possibility of repeating the training is important for learning. High-fidelity virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool to use for realistic and repeatable simulation training, but it needs to be further evaluated. The aim of this literature review was t
