In this second part of a series on medical debt and the costs of care, we examine the past and present financial protections for low-income patients at nonprofit hospitals. Born of almshouses and religious orders, nonprofit hospitals were devoted at their founding to the care of the poor. However, over the course of the twentieth century, they became more focused on high-priced care for paying patients. This study examines whether American hospitals continued to engage in non-price or quality competition over the recent past as health care markets underwent fundamental structural changes and the economic incentives facing hospital managers were correspondingly altered. It also investigates the degree to which such rivalrous behavior contributes to losses in economic welfare. The effect of revascularization surgery on the amputee population of 2 hospitals (VA and private) was studied in 2 time periods a decade apart--1969-70 and 1979-80. Two hundred and ninety-one patients, with an average age of 69 in 1965, referred to a psychogeriatric clinic were studied. All but 20 were traced. 167 died and 104 remained alive. 73 were institutionalized. Medical, psychiatric and social data was available for all. Using mortality tables, we calculated the time of death for each patient. The group that exceeded their life expectancy was compared to the group that died prematurely. Human volunteer blood donor programs are commonplace, but the concept of nonhuman animal blood banking is relatively new. Few studies exist regarding efficacy, donor screening, and safety for volunteer companion animals. This retrospective study evaluated a nonprofit, community-based canine volunteer donor program using community blood drives. METHODS: Retrospective study of acute poisoning cases treated in 3 hospitals between 2013 and 2017 and an analysis of the demographic characteristics, types of poisoning, seasonal variations, care received and recurrence.
