Color of hot soup modulates postprandial satiety, thermal sensation, and body temperature in young women.

The color of food is known to modulate not only consumers' motivation to eat, but also thermal perception. Here we investigated whether the colors of hot soup can influence thermal sensations and body temperature, in addition to the food acceptability and appetite. Twelve young female participants consumed commercial white potage soup, modified to yellow or blue by adding food dyes, at 9 a.m. on 3 separated days. During the test, visual impression (willingness to eat, palatability, comfort, warmth, and anxiety) and thermal sensations were self-reported using visual analog scales. Core (intra-a

Thermal buffering with medium-temperature PCM for enhanced solar still performance in hot Egyptian conditions.

Solar-still desalination is a promising, sustainable option for decentralizing freshwater production in areas with useful solar irradiation. Nevertheless, the relatively low productivity of conventional solar stills is always an obstacle to their large-scale application. In response to this challenge, thermal energy storage has been a subject of extensive research as a potent method that can be employed in the solar desalination system via phase-change materials (PCMs). The current study integrated a medium-temperature PCM into a single-slope solar still to enhance thermal energy storage and p

Too hot to sleep? Sleep behaviour and surface body temperature of Wahlberg's Epauletted Fruit Bat.

The significance of sleep and factors that affect it have been well documented, however, in light of global climate change the effect of temperature on sleep patterns has only recently gained attention. Unlike many mammals, bats (order: Chiroptera) are nocturnal and little is known about their sleep and the effects of ambient temperature (Ta) on their sleep. Consequently we investigated seasonal temperature effects on sleep behaviour and surface body temperature of free-ranging Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat, Epomophorus wahlbergi, at a tree roost. Sleep behaviours of E. wahlbergi were record

Utility of hot-balloon-based pulmonary vein isolation under balloon surface temperature monitoring: First clinical experience.

INTRODUCTION: A new hot balloon system that registers balloon surface temperature (BST) during energy delivery is now available for clinical use in Japan. This study sought to investigate the utility of BST measurement for achievement of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) by a single-shot energy delivery strategy during hot balloon ablation (HBA). METHODS: We applied and tested the system in 30 consecutive patients undergoing HBA for paroxysmal or early-persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). We also performed real-time PV potential monitoring using a circular catheter. RESULTS: Acute PVI was achie

Effects of Hot Water Immersion at Different Temperatures during a Transition Period on Vertical Jump Performance.

Increased muscle temperature (Tm) enhances exercise performance but can decrease during the transition period between the warm-up and the competition. Although passive warming strategies can maintain Tm, the optimal heating temperatures and their effects on performance are unclear. Seventeen healthy males participated in this study with four experimental conditions: no intervention (CON), hot water immersion at 36°C (HWI36), 39°C (HWI39), and 42°C (HWI42) during a 20-min transition period. Vertical jump (VJ) performance, core temperature (Tc), the heart rate (HR), and perceived thermal comfort

Controlling Legionella pneumophila in water systems at reduced hot water temperatures with copper and silver ionization.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired Legionnaires' disease is associated with the presence of Legionella pneumophila in hospital water systems. In the United Kingdom, the Department of Health recommends maintaining hot water temperatures >55°C and cold water temperatures <20°C at the point of delivery to prevent proliferation of L pneumophila in water systems. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of copper and silver ionization to control L pneumophila at deliberately reduced hot water temperatures (43°C) within a newly installed water system in a new building linked to a large health care facili

Determination of the quench velocity and rewetting temperature of hot surfaces: Formulation of a nonisothermal microscale hydrodynamic model.

A nonisothermal microscale model of the three-phase, solid-liquid-gas, contact zone is formulated in the context of rewetting phenomena. The model incorporates hydrodynamics, heat transfer, interfacial phenomena, and intermolecular long range forces, in a two-dimensional proximal region of the order of 1000 A in width and 100 A in thickness. The model comprises scaled mass, momentum, and energy balances, and their corresponding scaled boundary conditions. The small contact angles which are characteristic of rewetting situations facilitate the use of the lubrication approximation, and the dynam

Comparison of intraairway temperatures in normal and asthmatic subjects after hyperpnea with hot, cold, and ambient air.

To determine how the inhalation of hot dry, frigid, and room temperature air influences airway heat transfers, we obtained single-breath temperature washout curves in eight asthmatic and eight normal subjects before and during periods of hyperpnea. The order of study was randomly determined, and the thermal events with each inspirate were correlated with their effects on lung function. Each inspired air condition produced significant airway cooling in both groups. Cold air evoked the greatest response, followed thereafter by hot dry and then room air. Only the asthmatic subjects developed airw

Moderate-temperature hot-air drying improves color retention in sorghum seeds: Associations with lipid and flavonoid profiles.

Postharvest drying affects sorghum seed color, but the physiological and metabolic features associated with color retention remain unclear. We compared natural sun-drying (Dn), 40 °C hot-air drying (D40), and 60 °C hot-air drying (D60) using colorimetric, physiological, biochemical, and untargeted metabolomic analyses. D40 showed the best color retention, whereas Dn caused the greatest deterioration and D60 achieved the fastest dehydration. At the final moisture content, D40 had 38.42% lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content than Dn, while superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities

Hot Hydrocarbon-Solvent Slot-Die Coating Enables High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Temperature-Dependent Aggregation Behavior.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have made rapid progress in terms of their development as a sustainable energy source. However, record-breaking devices have not shown compatibility with large-scale production via solution processing in particular due to the use of halogenated environment-threatening solvents. Here, slot-die fabrication with processing involving hydrocarbon-based solvents is used to realize highly efficient and environmentally friendly OSCs. Highly compatible slot-die coating with roll-to-roll processing using halogenated (chlorobenzene (CB)) and hydrocarbon solvents (1,2,4-trimethy

Slip-Resistant Connections with Hot-Dip Galvanized Faying Surface Under Freeze-Thaw Cycles and/or Low Temperature.

In some occasions, outdoor steel structures like wind towers, bridges, winter sports facilities, and so on are subjected to extreme environmental conditions with the presence of ice and/or with below-zero temperatures. Sometimes in these situations, surface protection of the steel structure is usually designed using hot-dip galvanizing to improve its durability. In these special circumstances, the structure's connections are also exposed to adverse climatic agents. International standards and codes such as Eurocode 3 or EN1090-2 do not provide indications for these cases. In this experimental

Computational simulation of temperature and velocity distribution in human upper respiratory airway during inhalation of hot air.

The present study provides an accurate simulation of velocity and temperature distributions of inhalation thermal injury in a human upper airway, including vestibule, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynx, and upper part of main bronchus. To this end, a series of CT scan images, taken from an adult woman, was used to construct a three dimensional model. The airway walls temperature was adjusted according to existing in vivo temperature measurements. Also, in order to cover all breathing activities, five different breathing flow rates (10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 l/min) an

Temperature diagnostic to identify high risk areas and optimize Legionella pneumophila surveillance in hot water distribution systems.

Legionella pneumophila is frequently detected in hot water distribution systems and thermal control is a common measure implemented by health care facilities. A risk assessment based on water temperature profiling and temperature distribution within the network is proposed, to guide effective monitoring strategies and allow the identification of high risk areas. Temperature and heat loss at control points (water heater, recirculation, representative points-of-use) were monitored in various sections of five health care facilities hot water distribution systems and results used to develop a temp

Drink temperature influences fluid intake and endurance capacity in men during exercise in a hot, dry environment.

The effect of different drink temperatures on the perception of exertion and exercise endurance has not been extensively investigated. Consequently, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of drink temperature on fluid intake and endurance during cycling in the heat. Eight healthy, non-acclimated males (26 +/- 7 years; maximum oxygen uptake, 54 +/- 5 ml kg(-1) min(-1); mean +/- S.D.) cycled to exhaustion at 34 degrees C and at 65% of their peak aerobic power, consuming a drink at either 19 degrees C (CON) or 4 degrees C (COLD). Six of the eight subjects cycled for longer dur

Setting the limit: cold rather than hot temperatures limit intertidal distribution of a coastal foundation species.

Long-lasting restoration success of foundation species requires understanding their responses to climate change. For species with broad distributions, lower latitudes may serve as a proxy for future warming at higher latitudes. Such space-for-time substitutions are a powerful tool for developing climate change predictions for species distributed along steep elevational gradients. To understand climate resilience of a key coastal foundation species, we examined the upper elevational limit of the native Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida) along its entire range at 26 sites spanning 21° latitude, from

Effect of ice slurry ingestion on core temperature and blood pressure response after exercise in a hot environment.

Delays in the restoration of thermoregulation after exercise in a hot environment has been associated with post-exercise hypotension. This study tested the hypothesis that simultaneous internal cooling and rehydration by ingesting ice slurry prevents the excessive decrease in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and promotes recovery of core and skin temperatures in male athletes. Seven male athletes participated in this randomized controlled trial with a crossover design. The participants ran on a treadmill at 75% of their maximal oxygen uptake in the heat (35 °C, 60% relative humidity), up to exhaus

A high-resolution voxel model for predicting local tissue temperatures in humans subjected to warm and hot environments.

This work describes and presents results from a new three-dimensional whole-body model of human thermoregulation. The model has been implemented using a version of the "Brooks Man" anatomical data set, consisting of 1.3x10(8) cubic volume elements (voxels) measuring 0.2 cm/side. The model simulates thermoregulation through passive mechanisms (metabolism, blood flow, respiration, and transpiration) and active mechanisms (vasodilatation, vasoconstriction, sweating, and shivering). Compared with lumped or compartment models, a voxel model is capable of high spatial resolution and can capture a le

An acute naproxen dose does not affect core temperature or Interleukin-6 during cycling in a hot environment.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs' anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory effects has led some individuals to theorize these medications may blunt core body temperature (Tc) increases during exercise. We utilized a double-blind, randomized, and counterbalanced cross-over design to examine the effects of a 24-h naproxen dose (3-220 mg naproxen pills) and placebo (0 mg naproxen) on Tc and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations during cycling in a hot or ambient environment.
