Distribution of radioactive carbon from [U-14C]glucose in the mouse poisoned by hydrofluoric acid has been studied by whole-body autoradiography. Under normal conditions, the highest autoradiographic density was found in the Harder's gland, palatine gland, sublingual gland, large intestinal mucosa, and many regions of the central nervous system 30 minutes after intraperitoneal injection of [U-14C]glucose. On the other hand, after hydrofluoric acid poisoning, it was found that (1) the radioactivity of brain was unchanged throughout all the poisoning; (2) the liver, renal cortex, lung, and blood

BACKGROUND: Hydrofluoric acid poisoning can cause severe hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, which may subsequently lead to ventricular arrhythmias. This report describes a 52-year-old male patient who developed refractory ventricular fibrillation following hydrofluoric acid ingestion, which led to cardiogenic shock. After receiving veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) as an adjunctive therapy, the patient recovered well and was ultimately discharged. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old male developed persistent ventricular fibrillation (VF) after ingesting 50 mL of industrial

INTRODUCTION: Hydrofluoric acid is extremely toxic and can corrode tissues while reacting with calcium and magnesium, leading to severe tissue damage. The antidote, calcium gluconate, is effective for treating mild to moderate burns. However, our hospital lacks registered calcium gluconate gel, making treatment challenging. We investigated alternative soaking methods due to scant literature on this approach.
METHODS: This retrospective case series study reviews hydrofluoric acid burn cases at China Medical University Hospital from 2004 and 2020, focusing on the effectiveness of calcium glucon

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) ingestion may result in rapid death from systemic fluoride poisoning. Because fluoride binds calcium and magnesium, oral administration of calcium or magnesium salts has been suggested as useful therapy for HF ingestion. This study evaluates oral administration of calcium and magnesium salts for the prevention or attenuation of acute HF toxicity following oral exposure in a mouse model. Mixed breed CF-1 mice were randomized to treatment with a lethal-dose HF premixed with calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, or deionized water by gavage. Average survival time for the thr

Orthopedic implant is commonly associated with occurrence or relapse of osteomyelitis. This study developed a hydrofluoric acid (HF) cleaned silicon nitride (Si3N4) implant Si3N4_AC for osteomyelitis control and established a rat tibial osteomyelitis model to evaluate its efficacy on eradicating periprosthetic infection and enhancing bone regeneration. In vitro studies revealed Si3N4_AC had improved biocompatibility and inhibited Staphylococcus aureus adhesion. A custom-made Si3N4_AC implant was prepared and inserted into the rat tibia longitudinal cavity inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus.

The fluoride ions of the industrially largely irreplaceable, locally corrosive hydrofluoric acid (HF) can scavenge cations in biological tissues, which explains their high toxic potential, and also leads to local acidification through proton release. The influence of three complexing agents, calcium (Ca2+) gluconate (as 2.5% Ca2+gel and individually (2.84%) or commercially (10%) formulated Ca2+solution), magnesium (Mg2+) gluconate (2.84%) solution and aluminium (Al3+) solution (Hexafluorine®, pure and diluted) on the absorption of fluoride following HF exposure (1-3 min, 100 μl, 30%/0.64 cm2)

There is an empirically established correlation between ionic conductivity isotherms and solid-liquid phase diagrams in most electrolyte solutions, wherein the composition of maximum conductivity (x max) typically coincides with the eutectic composition (x eutectic). In this work, we investigate pronounced deviations from this correlation observed in hydrofluoric acid (HF) and acetic acid (AA) aqueous solutions, two systems that behave anomalously compared to other common acids. Ionic conductivity data across multiple temperatures and concentrations were compiled from literature and supplement

This is a case report of decontamination and treatment of a 70% hydrofluoric acid (HF) dermal splash injury. A worker was splashed with 70% HF, sustaining approximately 10% TBSA first- to third-degree chemical skin burns of the face, trunk, and left thigh and leg. Initial decontamination involved water rinsing, removal of contaminated clothing, more water rinsing, topical application of magnesium oxide, and administration of intravenous narcotics for management of severe pain. After a delay of approximately 3 hours, active skin washing with Hexafluorine®, 5 L, was performed, followed by intrav

In this study, the process of metal cation reduction on multi-crystalline silicon in a dilute hydrofluoric acid (HF) matrix is described using Ag(I), Cu(II), Au(III) and Pt(IV). The experimental basis utilized batch tests with various solutions of different metal cation and HF concentrations and multi-crystalline silicon wafers. The metal deposition kinetics and the stoichiometry of metal deposition and silicon dissolution were calculated by means of consecutive sampling and analysis of the solutions. Several reaction mechanisms and reaction steps of the process were discussed by overlaying th

RATIONALE: Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is a highly corrosive agent and can cause corrosive burns. HF can penetrate deeply into tissues through intact skin and the lipid barrier, leading to painful liquefactive necrosis, and inducing hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia. In this study, we hypothesize that continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) may be beneficial in addressing hemodynamic instability in cases of HF poisoning.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 25-year-old man fell into an electroplating pool containing 10% HF and 50% nitric acid.
DIAGNOSES: He had severe cutaneous injuries involving approximately

OBJECTIVES: In our previous study, we reported that even a sublethal dose of hydrofluoric acid (HFA) could cause acute toxic effects 60 min after intravenous injection. This study was designed to investigate the time- and dose-dependent changes associated with these disorders. The serum fluoride (F) kinetics are also considered in the discussion of the relationship between the concentrations of serum F and the disorders.
METHODS: Rats were injected with HFA (1.6 or 9.6 mg/kg body weight) for the dose-response relationship study. For each dose, the rats were assigned to one of seven groups. Bl

Two patients presented with potentially fatal pulmonary oedema after accidental exposure to nitric and hydrofluoric acid fumes during electroplating. Despite aggressive respiratory support, one succumbed to respiratory failure 3.5h after inhalation. The other patient also rapidly progressed to respiratory failure. Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) was started 5h after exposure at the ED. During ECLS, hypoxia improved, but pulmonary oedema shown by chest radiography became aggravated. N-Acetyl cysteine and calcium gluconate were given i.v. on the first day of admission and nebulised for 48 h a

Hydrofluoric acid (HF), a dangerous inorganic acid, is widely used in various industries and in daily life. Chemical burns caused by HF exposure occur more frequently in some regions worldwide. It has been reported that some cases with HF burns can be lethal due to the hypertoxicity of HF. In this article, we present a case of a 24-year-old worker who suffered HF burns by 53% HF solution to his face, neck, and nasal cavity. This patient quickly developed electrolyte disturbance, that is, hypocalcemia, and hypopotassemia, and myocardial injury after exposure. Multiple measures had been taken to

INTRODUCTION: Surface treatment is essential for optimizing zirconia bonding, but conventional airborne-particle abrasion (APA) may compromise its mechanical properties, particularly in highly translucent materials. Nitric-hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching has recently emerged as a potential alternative, yet its influence on the surface characteristics and mechanical performance of different zirconia generations remains inadequately understood. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of APA and nitric-HF etching on the surface roughness, crystalline structure, and biaxial flexural strength (B
