Introduction of sequential inactivated polio vaccine-oral polio vaccine schedule for routine infant immunization in Brazil's National Immunization Program.

In August 2012, the Brazilian Ministry of Health introduced inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) as part of sequential polio vaccination schedule for all infants beginning their primary vaccination series. The revised childhood immunization schedule included 2 doses of IPV at 2 and 4 months of age followed by 2 doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV) at 6 and 15 months of age. One annual national polio immunization day was maintained to provide OPV to all children aged 6 to 59 months. The decision to introduce IPV was based on preventing rare cases of vaccine-associated paralytic polio, financially susta

Specificity of tuberculin skin test improved by BCG immunization schedule change in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculin skin test (TST) has been used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). However, in Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccinated patients, TST tends to produce false-positive results. According to the previous vaccination schedule, Japanese people were mandated to receive up to three doses of BCG-vaccine. The vaccination schedule was changed in 2003 and as per the new schedule, only infants are administered a dose of BCG vaccine. Our hypothesis is that this change can lead to a reduction in the cross-reaction to TST. METHODS: We evaluated th

Beyond the Immunization Schedule: Unmasking Vaccine Failure in a Child With Down Syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) commonly experience recurrent infections and may have altered immune responses to routine vaccinations. Primary care providers routinely monitor typical DS-associated comorbidities, but immunization effectiveness is not regularly assessed. Current guidelines recommend standard childhood vaccination schedules for children with DS, though evidence suggests some may have inadequate immune responses despite complete vaccination records. Here, we report the case of a 5-year-old child with DS who experienced frequent respiratory infections despite adherence to recomm

Should the chickenpox vaccine be included in the National Immunization Schedule in India?

Varicella (chickenpox) is an acute, highly contagious viral disease with worldwide distribution. The highest prevalence occurs in the 4-10 year age group but tends to be more severe in adults. It may be fatal in neonates, immunocompromised persons, and normal adults, especially smokers. Varicella is usually a benign childhood disease, and rarely rated as an important public health problem, but this can be severe and even fatal in otherwise healthy children (< 1 out of every 10,000 cases). Chickenpox can cause pneumonia (23 out of every 10,000 cases), and is an important risk factor for develop

Cost-effectiveness of incorporating inactivated poliovirus vaccine into the routine childhood immunization schedule.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the economic consequences of introducing inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) into the routine vaccination schedule in the United States to reduce vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP). DESIGN: Cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness models were formulated to compare the current national 4-dose live attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) schedule with a 4-dose IPV schedule or a sequential schedule of 2 doses of IPV followed by 2 doses of OPV. Model assumptions were derived from the National Health Interview Survey (1994), current prices for OPV and IPV, a Delp

Recommended childhood immunization schedule--United States, 1995. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The need for a single childhood immunization schedule prompted the unification of previous vaccine recommendations made by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). In addition to presenting the newly recommended schedule for the administration of vaccines during childhood, this report addresses the previous differences between the AAP and ACIP childhood vaccination schedules and the rationale for changing previous recommendations.

Impact of national immunization schedule on vaccine preventable diseases: a hospital based study.

An analysis of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) in two block years, i.e., 1972-1975 and 1986-1989 showed an overall decline in morbidity and mortality. Improvement in morbidity was most noticeable in typhoid fever followed by polio and tetanus. However, in tuberculosis and measles with compilations, there was a significant increase in admission rates 3.8 vs 4.4% and 1.8 vs 2.2%, respectively. Mortality in vaccine preventable diseases except polio has declined significantly.

Introduction of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunization schedule of South Africa.

South Africa is currently the only country on the African continent using inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) for routine immunization in a sequential schedule in combination with oral polio vaccine (OPV). IPV is a component of an injectable pentavalent vaccine introduced nationwide in April 2009 and administered according to EPI schedule at 6, 10 and 14 weeks with a booster dose at 18 months. OPV is administered at birth and together with the first IPV dose at 6 weeks, which stimulates gut immune system producing a memory IgA response (OPV), followed by IPV to minimize the risk of vaccine associa

A two-dose schedule for immunization of infants using a more concentrated DPT-vaccine.

In a controlled field-trial in infants in the Philippines, a two-dose schedule with an interval of 6 months between injections using a concentrated adsorbed DPT-vaccine was evaluated. The serologic response against the three components in the vaccine was satisfactory, whereas the side-effects in the concentrated vaccine group did not differ from those observed in a control DPT group. After two injections, the coverage percentage with DPT-vaccine was shown to be higher than 70%. Two implications of the introduction of the two-dose DPT-immunization schedule are discussed, i.e. (a) the possibilit

Pre-exposure immunization against rabies using Japanese rabies vaccine following the WHO recommended schedule.

We examined the efficacy and safety of the Japanese purified chick embryo cell rabies vaccine (PCEC-K) when administered on days 0, 7, and 28, as recommended by the WHO. Post-vaccination serum samples were obtained from 53 human subjects, and rabies antibody titers were determined by a combination of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and neutralizing antibody (NA) assay. By day 42 of the experiment, which was 2 weeks after the third dose, all subjects had developed NA titers of 0.5 IU/ml or higher. The geometric mean titers of ELISA antibody and NA were 3.8 EU/ml and 5.7 IU/ml, respect
