Congenital malformations of the spleen are rare. We report a patient with an ectopic spleen located in the left iliac fossa, which was excised in order to prevent severe complications such as torsion of the pedicle, rupture or infection. A second patient with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura presented with an accessory spleen located retroperitoneally. Removal of this spleen following removal of the normotopic one resulted in cure of purpura. The clinical, radiological and radioisotopic studies used to locate and identify these malformations are described.

Previously, polypeptide constructs-modular nanotransporters (MNTs)-were created to deliver biologically active molecules into the nuclei of melanoma cells. BACKGROUND: Antibody-based therapies targeting CD38 are currently used as single agents as well as in combination regimens for multiple myeloma, a malignant plasma cell disorder. In this study, we aimed to develop anti-CD38 single-domain antibodies (sdAbs) that can be used to trace CD38+ tumour cells and subsequently used for targeted radionuclide therapy. The dynamics of leucocytes in abdominal abscesses were studied using indium-111 autologous leucocyte scanning in 30 patients. Thirteen patients showing enteric drainage of leucocytes on delayed scans were characterised by a lack of abdominal localising signs and a low detection rate by ultrasound (25%). By contrast, 16 of 17 patients without enteric drainage had abdominal signs, and in these patients ultrasound was associated with a higher detection rate (58%). Localisation and quantification of protein loss in protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is useful in the clinical management of hypoalbuminaemia. This study examines the effects of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs on the small intestine in humans. Using an 111In-leukocyte technique in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 90) and osteoarthritis (n = 7), it appears that nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs cause small intestinal inflammation in two-thirds of patients on long-term treatment and on discontinuation, the inflammation may persist for up to 16 mo. The effects of endogenous and exogenous opioid substances on feline colonic transit were evaluated using colonic transit scintigraphy. Naloxone (0.3 mg/kg, i.m.) accelerated emptying of the cecum and ascending colon, and filling of the transverse colon.
